That being said the situation matters a lot based on what youre shooting at.
So I guess I agree if you need the pest to hold point 20k if youre picking ships on approach separated from their main gang try to stay out farther and overheat your point.
With links (I don't plan on flying pest without links) point range goes to 32km/40km overheated and is pretty much irrelevant. The whole thing I'm debating about is the safe range to hang about, and thus what ammo to use. I suppose 'safe' range will depend on the pilot, hence my plans to start at 24km and slowly make my way closer to fights as I feel more confident. Getting back to your question of ammo, the answer is barrage, youre hanging out at 24-28k if you have links then yea point away . If the battle ever comes down to you being able to get close enough to justify non barrage ammo its moot because youre already won.
Should be cut and dry which ammo type to use. Scimi + equal or greater numbers than opposition? Go with emp/fusion, you're highly unlikely to be a target before every other cane is dead. If you want to do the range kiting thing than go with barrage.

Ueber probed down a wh. I jumped in with my bomber and find a orca in space setting up a pos. I start attacking him and he warps away because warp core stabs = pro.

Are you using maxed out Skills?
I find I'm able to use RF Close range ammo out to 30km and have it preform noticeably better than Barrage. I only switch to Barrage when I get out to 40km or so.

Well we still got this, so not too bad I guess.

Jayme those graphs I posted are all with Sharpshooter and trajectory analysis 4. They seem to suggest barrage is better even against shield ships with high kinetic/explosive resists at >24km. Obviously further I go = barrage gets better but I'm contemplating use of RF ammo.

I don't know what fit you're using either.
The one I gave the corp has superior performance from RF over Barrage up to about 30km. This I can say from personal experience. Granted I have Sharpshooter 5 and TA 5 but yea... Not sure if this is the case of Graphs not telling the whole story or something but RF is definitely superior for a lot more than 24km.

It's a pity you left when you did thornton. If you had stayed just a little longer for our move to oddelulf I think you would have enjoyed it.

I'm a fucking idiot, apparently all my previous graphs had RF at my current skills and barrage at all V's, thus making Barrage look a LOT better than RF. Sorry for all the confusion. With new corrected figures:
1) vs drake
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/ShZHQ.png)
Red = RF EMP (best option) Green = Barrage Blue = Corp fit nanodrake with all V's (for reference)
Barrage overtakes RF EMP at 36km.
2) vs shield cane with 1 anti-em rig
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/jGcph.png)
Red = RF PP (best option) Green = Barrage Blue = Corp fit nanodrake with all V's (for reference)
Barrage (and fully V'd drakes) overtake RF PP at 32km.
---
These new fixed graphs agree with everything Jayme has said. RF ammo is the way to go unless you're at 40km, at which point you should stop firing and let your drakes do the work anyway. Case solved.
---
For funzies, I did a quick comparison of a nanopest, cane and drake (all with respectable skills).
1) Against drake:
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/4VizB.png)
EMP is best ammo against drakes.
Red = nanopest, RF EMP Dark Blue = nanocane, RF EMP Light Blue = nanocane, Barrage Green = drake, Scourge Fury
Tempest is obviously always better than cane, and is better (with RF) than a Drake up to about 35km. Cane using RF EMP is better than Barrage until 23km.
2) Against cane (1x anti-em rig):
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/wCzBO.png)
PP is best ammo against canes.
Red = nanopest, RF PP Dark Blue = nanocane, RF PP Light Blue = nanocane, Barrage Green = drake, Scourge fury
For canes, RF PP is better up to 20km. Drake overtakes canes at 20km as well.
---
These last few graphs don't really have much of a point I suppose, except we now know that unless we are specifically going to brawl down a ship there is no reason to switch to RF ammo from Barrage when we nano, even against a shield gang where one would presume RF EMP is ideal. Interesting.

i just still dont know how you think you are only safe nanoing +20km
