The war between looks like it's been averted. What led to it was Montolio (leader of HBC, which is the coalition that the alliance TEST is the leading/founding member of) wanted to kill Fatal Ascension (CFC alliance), but didn't want to fight the CFC outright (TEST and Goonswarm Federation are tight), so he tried to make it look like FA had started the hostilities. After the HBC's diplomat let their intentions known to the CFC, Montolio was removed from CFC's Jabber. After that, shit escalated, Montolio started ranting and raving, and it looked like CFC and HBC would go to war. Shadoo (leader of Pandemic Legion, which is the strongest alliance in the HBC if not nullsec) talked Montolio off the cliff under the guise of "who wants to grind sov?"
What happened yesterday was a CFC titan jumped instead of bridged, PL hot-dropped said titan, CFC counter hot-dropped to protect their titan, and then basically all of the CFC and HBC batphoned everyone they knew, plus random null/lowsec alliances trying to killmail whore. A couple hours and 800b+ later it looks like the CFC got their ass kicked, but to hear it from their perspective it was basically half of nullsec vs. the CFC in one giant clusterfuck of a fight. There will probably be more fights like this in the future, but I doubt anything meaningful (in the sense that sov will change hands, etc.) will come of it.
I'm not involved in the conflict in any capacity other than a spectator, but this is what I've pieced together through TheMittani articles (CFC biased), an interview with Montolio from EveNews24, random Kugutsumen forum posts, and a little from EVE-O forum posts. Anyone who has more knowledge of the situation feel free to correct me.
EDIT: glad to see the metagaming in eve thread got you interested in the game, that thread is what got me interested as well. After I read the entire OP in one sitting I started googling EVE and read about the Guiding Hang Social Club scam and that really cemented how awesome of a game EVE was to me even before I ever played it.

I doubt that there will be a full on goons vs test war as both sides have a lot to lose (income wise). I would love to see it happen but I don't see it in the cards unless some crazy shenanigans go down.

Ok, so I've been reading about this game a ton over the weekend in light of recent developments and I think it's time I finally try it out. A couple of questions though:
a) I'm a little confused about the versions of this game. The OP describes a 21 days for free buddy invite system, but there's also EVE: Retribution available on Steam for 20€ (with 30 days included) and the demo I downloaded on Steam is actually called Tyrannis? So basically, are there any upsides to buying the game on Steam and do I have to buy Retribution as an expansion or something?
b) A lot of people are going crazy about PvP with the huge battle and all, but personally I'm not in too much of a hurry to start PvPing - I'd like to establish some kind of economic base so that I can start paying for the subscription with ISK. I've read a little bit about professions etc. and right now I'm leaning towards either mining or mission running as my initial course - is mission running comparable to mining in terms of income? Are there any other professions that are more lucrative for a player starting out?
c) In regard to character(s): there are three character slots on an account as I can see - is it prudent to fill them all right away and start training skills in certain paths? Basically, is it better to have a miner, a combat pilot and a third profession splitting off in terms of skills right away or is it feasible to have the miner be a combat pilot as well?

a) All expansions are free. Get the 21d trial from someone and upgrade it to full account. No idea why steam still has Tyrannis, it was the name of the expansion a while ago.
b) Missioning and mining are both bad bad income. Shield Battery teaches you how to make good isk, as in more than the vast majority of eve will ever make. Even for new characters. If you you really really want to choose between mining and missioning, mining skills are only useful for mining, missions require mostly the same skillset as pvp. Neither path is not something I'd recommend.
c) You can only train one character at a time, so focus on your main for now. Later on you can add trade alts, industry alts and so on.

PvP is not the same as PvE.
I'd like to think I'm semi-decent at PvP, but I'm pretty close to break even in PvE.....

Regarding questions: get free 21 day trial from one of us, learn how to make isk quickly from us and upgrade to a full account using that isk. You will never have to spend a single dollar IRL to play this game.
Shield battery will teach you to make much more money on day 2 than the rest of eve will make in year 5. But between mining and missioning, missions are a lot more isk if you do them correctly.
Don't wait to be financially stable before learning to pvp. The ships you will be flying at the very beginning will be piss cheap and I believe shield battery may give them out for free any way.

To my knowledge you can't update the name of a game on steam easily, thus EVE is probably stuck with the expansion name from so long ago.

Vagabonds are kiting ships with low hp. Mallers are known for having massive tanks and are slow ships. If a well fit maller lands a scram on a vagabond the vagabond is 100% dead. If the vagabond pilot has half a brain however the maller should never get into range of a vagabond.

I think so. I remember when FoxFour or w/e that guys name is was hired from the playerbase, he was talking to me and some RvB guys about it a while back.

Yes, and especially from the RP community. As a matter of fact, one might say the RP community is almost dead because CCP hired them all.
They do the fiction, chronicles, live events, event acting etc.
