oh sir being a pirate is a life of immense fun and epic luls(assuming you start out with a crew and/or know what you're doing.) You get to hang out in low sec camping gates waiting for nubs and traders to warp in and when they do you get to ransom their sorry butts as they cry scrub tears all over the solar system. That being said as a pirate there are a couple of draw backs... you'll never be super rich because you will get blown up a fair amount and you'll need to buy new ships and it can get boring waiting for gankable stuff to warp in. However you can always scam for the extra isk (social piracy ) and you can always go can flipping if you don't want to wait a long time.

Largest drawback -

you need an ALT or have someone willing to freighter shit for you.
Pirating without the means to replenish supplies suckssssssssssss. So get an alt or find a corp.

The problem is finding a good corp that'll let a newb in.

Also, watch your security status, don't let it drop too low because you do not want to be stranded in low sec.
I still shudder at the memory of having to raise my sec back up so I could reenter empire.

You won't make a lot of money and it won't be because you'll die a lot.
Unless you actively seek other pirates/outlaws, 90% of the ships you destroy will be shit fitted.

Great way to make OMGWTFSOMANYISKS amounts of isk.

Train up mechanic to level 3, then get the salvaging skill.

HOLY SHIT, do you get to rake in so much fucking isk when you go salvage level 3 missions. fuuuck. oh yeah, get a good enough standing with the corp you're running missions for. that's the only way you can get higher level missions. It's fucking worth it, though.

Falcons are still the most overpowered thing over.

Stay away from Hybrids, they suck atm.
Projectiles are ok
Missiles are kinda bad atm.
Lasers are ridiculously good.

Most of my skills are Minmatar skills and with a good I don't know, 15million SP at LEAST allocated just to projectiles/minmatar piloting skills I can just barely get a decent damn performance out of my Tempest.
Python is garbage, number 1 advocate of getting rid of it.

That's pretty standard for a battleship.

People who pilot a battleship with less than 10million SP make me cringe.

Newbs are great.

You can fly cheap, worthless ships and still be immensely valuable to a PvP group. Or you could mine minerals and help start an infrastructure for the corp. Or you could quickly train some hauler skills and move stuff around. Or you could quickly get yourself in a cruiser with PvE skills and help other people do difficult missions (of which you would share rewards).

People argue that because the way skill training works you'll never be able to catch up to the people who have been playing longer than you. While this is true, you'll never have the same skill points as them, that's not what it's about. EvE Online is about specialization. You pick one thing to be really good at, and in a year's time, you'll probably have all the skills trained to a proficient enough level to use that ship or do that task almost as well as a veteran. If you stay focused just on that, you -will- be just as good as a veteran in two years. As long as you specialize in a specific task, you will always be valuable to someone.

Two years! That's a ridiculously long time. I don't want to have to play a game for 2 years just to get the point where I can "Really" play.

Did you read the rest of my post, or just the last two sentences?

Being exactly on par with a veteran in a specific task takes a long time. Being able to "really" play takes all of about a day or two.

You can "Really" play the game right from the start, hell, you can fly a cruiser within 7 days of you starting the game, you can fit it ok in 2 days and you can afford a second cruiser the day after that, but you WILL get better at piloting your ship the more you train. The reason is because the more levels of a certain skill you train, the more bonuses it gives you. A cruiser with medium blasters 4 will do more damage than one with blasters 3. Even so, it's not that much of a difference, and unless you're some kind of HARDCORE guy who lives and breathes EVE and actually cares about something like a 5% increase in blaster damage, then you don't even have to worry about it. It's not like you have to fit Tech 2 EVERYTHING to win a fight.

Some might even argue that tech2 everything is a bad idea. It's simply too costly for the average player to lose something so valuable.

Personally, I love it when I have enemies who think it's OK to take on me and my newbie friends in their ridiculously outfitted battleship, and we'll come out with 12 or so frigates all fitted with eWar and he'll be unable to do -anything- except sit there as we pick away at his shields and armor.

Obviously, that tactic can't be used in fleet warfare, but when people underestimate their foe, they end up podded.

I didn't know you could make so much isk from mining? Dunno, I've never mined in my life.

Trading is much harder and more time consuming than what most people would like to admit.
Most of the valuable stuff are already bought low and sold high so there's thin profit margins.
Until you gain intimate knowledge of the market; as I've said, it's more time consuming than most would admit.
Some people try to trade in one station and never leave - trading in the major hubs (Dodixie, Jita, etc). Others buy stuff from these hubs and move them to less populated areas (this takes timeeee).

Anyway, doing missions can net around 30-50 mill isk an hour depending on the ship you're using and the mission you're attempting. Many people do nothing but mission all day because it's easy and safe. Hell, many people having mission alts stationed in Motsu or Dodixie or wherever, and their only purpose is to make them isk to pvp.

Bounty hunting is broken, you won't any isk looking for bounties. It's more of a target of opportunity; no one ever goes looking for bounties to make isk.

Ratting in 0.0 can be very good if you find a quiet area where you can freely chain BSs. It's unlikely but it can be very profitable. Many areas are already occupied by farmers (they don't usually fight you), the problem lies getting out to 0.0 without getting ganked and the occasional roaming person/gang who patrols your system. Just warp off and cloak when someone enters local.

About which race to choose:

Amarr is currently FOTM. Lasers own atm, but they only really come into their own with larger ships. Lasers on t1 frigs and t1 cruisers leave a lot to be desired. The arbitrator is good but it's primarily a drone ship, the omen is medicore and all the maller can do is tank. They do have the best mission ship in the Paladin.

Caldari is not so good as a solo race. Their ships are usually designed for ranged engagements; although the HAM drake is nice. For a newbie, they are the best mission race.

Gallente are good but not great. Blasters have a very short range so almost every engagement you partake in, there's a good chance you'll die. They have very good ships in every category though, except maybe their EAS and although they have their uses, I'm not all that enthused about their Recons.

Minmatar is all about versatility - which means mehhhhhh. Their damage is pretty low once you reach BSs (discounting the crazy amount of SP you need to fly a typhoon). I guess you don't have to worry about them anytime soon but large projectiles are pretty poor and I'm surprised there haven't been a slight buff. Their small/medium ships are fine though.

Also, with attributes. If you're unsure about where to place them, try to keep an even spread. Although, you can keep charisma the lowest (probably the best).

From SomethingAwful:

The 2/21 Secret as revealed by XTTZ:

So many of you have been wondering what the 2/21 thing is. Jakey finally realised their fuckup so we're good to post the thread I've been wanting to post all week. Enjoy.

Let me take you back in time a few weeks. Iromei had been funneling the contents of our director forums to Jake Noble for a while, and Jake was all too keen to 'troll' with this information. Every time I was in local with him he'd pose questions about the whereabouts of my alts, before answering them himself with gems such as "oh yeah Cynonet One is in XGH building leviathans". It was this cocky attitude that confirmed we had a director level spy in our midst and helped us to purge Iromei eventually. The point of all this is that the GBC knew exactly what+when our titan yards were building.

When Bob crumbled overnight we still had a Leviathan cooking for Darius in XGH with 3 weeks to go. It was a tough decision to abanadon any chance at defending that in order to throw everything at Delve, but in the end we decided that was the right thing to do. By taking Delve we'd secure the income and infrastructure to make many more titans, as well as getting to headshot Bob and kill several of their own titans-in-build.
Without wasting a second, ET had AAA & ROL & a pet alliance perform a downtime spam of T-AK. This blocked every moon and ensured they would get sov, as we would need to pop their towers to retake it. Losing T-AK would put XGH into contested, with sov4 dropping two days before the titan would complete. For days after ET crowed non-stop about killing Darius' titan. He has promised his members an easy titan abortion and was milking it for all it's worth on Russian COAD as a sign of his might.

So we paniced a little and spent the next week theorycrafting various ways to save the titan, bearing in mind we would not move the fleet back from Delve to do it. We attempted a director-only dread op in russian prime to try and get a good stront timing from the still-unfitted dickstars in system. But alas directors do not play Eve and we didn't have enough to attempt it.

Let me pause for a second to explain how constellational sov works. The defending alliance needs 51% sov in the const, as well as needing to own 3 or more stations. If these conditions are broken, you must meet them again 7 downtimes later or Sov4 drops. Remember that owning stations has nothing to do with who has sov in the system, just who was last to shoot the station and control it. For those of you who remember the Sov4's we have killed in the past, it always dropped 8 days after flipping a station system because it is 7 days from the first downtime that alliance does not own all stations.

With T-AK destined to flip to AAA, we theorycrafted another way to save the titan. By using an outpost egg (worth around 20bn) from our good buddies in RAWR, we could prop up sov4 for a few extra days to save the Leviathan worth 40bn+. It would be an hilarious abuse of sov mechanics, dropping a whole outpost 2 days before the deadline with over 2 days stront in every tower to cover it. However this was all unecessary, because we underestimated how bad our oppenents are.

T-AK went neutral sov on Sunday as the hostile tower claims kicked in. AAA did not show. Not a single one all day. T-AK then flipped to AAA sov on Monday. Again AAA did not show. As of this moment AAA have yet to show their faces in T-AK. They have not shot and taken the station and therefore constellational sov has not been put into contested mode. There was a pants-shitting moment where we saw Atlas shooting towers in 7KIK - the seven moon system for the new outpost. Then it turned out to be a lone vagabond passing through and taking pot shots at the shields. And finally last wednesday little Jakey Noble came to visit T-AK. We saw attack mails for the station and assumed they had realised their fuckup - yet it was just Jake in a covops shooting the fitting service of all things. Shooting the fitting service on a station AAA had sov for.
Sov4 will now last long enough to finish the titan safely and get it out. There was no need to throw away disposable outposts or siege in Russian prime because the sad truth is that ET is the leader of the alliance currently taking our old space. And $30k did not buy him any knowledge of sov mechanics.

Although, you can keep charisma the lowest (probably the best).

should i delete the Minmatar character I just made then? you make it sound like amarr=caldari>gallente>minmatar
