I'll make my 1st contribution to this thread. I'm a big 3s fan but I also play a lot of SNK fighters and I'll start with some SS5sp. For anyone who has never had any experience with SS, one word to describe the gameplay would be calculated. Zoning, poking, and counterpoking play a huge role in all of the SS's (even in SS4, where it's very combo intensive). Taking advantage of every small opportunity you get is crucial. Every move must be made with precision and thought, since you literally can die in 2 hits (especially with a weak vitality character).

Strong execution isn't necessarily required for you to be good at this game (the game isn't very execution intensive, although if you're an execution freak, there are characters who are very difficult to use). SS5sp is probably the least flashy out of all the SS's but it is probably the most balanced fighting game you'll ever find and it has a large pool of unique characters to choose from.

It's actually kinda tough to find an entertaining matchvideo for SS for people who have never played the game before, but there are some characters that are pretty entertaining to watch. I'm not gonna showcase all of the characters but I hope I can pique some interest.

+ Show Spoiler [match videos, kinda long descriptions] +

Suija is one of those "extremely difficult to use but top tier when handled right" characters. Suija is the only character who can "air block" with his bubble move (this is HUGE, also because of the air bubble, he gets very strong high-low options). So he can literally block someone's slash in the air and then counter with his own hard slash (you can actually see it in action in this match). FYI ALL of Suija's special moves are air only, meaning to do them on the ground, you have to either backdash or tigerknee the motion (which makes him one of the more difficult characters to use).

Haohmaru is almost like the Ryu of this game. Balanced and a bit above average in everything. He has HUGE damage and range (watch how much those hard slashes hit for).

Enja is a beast. He's slow and doesn't have great range, but he has huge huge damage potential (even for a game like SS!).

Ukyo is my character of choice in this game, so I know the most about him. He's one of the fastest and most mobile characters in the game (except for his lonng and floaty jump), however he doesn't really have much in terms of damage and has really low vitality (he has tuberculosis for cryin out loud!), so he'll mostly be wearing his opponents down with hit and run tactics. His special move where he slashes in a circle in the air is called the Tsubame Gaeshi and is one of his main sources of damage. It's fast, has great coverage, and can be comboed from the ground (it's an air only special but can be tigerkneed), however if he misses, he's eating probably at least 1/3rd of his life.
This match kinda showcases more of the footsie game. Ukyo is constantly doing fakes (throwing the apple, which is actually a feint of one of his special moves) and repositioning himself while Haohmaru is trying to close distance and seeing if Ukyo is stupid enough to dash into his hard slash lol.

Myrmidon, I'm ArC_man on ggpo but I actually haven't played on it before (no games that I really want to play on there right now, I don't really want to practice KoF98). I'll dick around with KoF98 if you want. I'm mostly waiting for Garou (it's only a matter of time) and Samurai Showdown (also only a matter of time imho).

Edit: Oh I just remembered, perhaps I should talk about the super system and stuff like that. In SS, your super meter is built when you get hit, some people build meter way faster (hot headed ones) some people build meter slower. When you hit your "rage" mode, your damage is increased (kenki or sword gauge that is, I'll talk about that later) and you can do your super. Another "super" of sorts is the Mu no Kyouchi ("state of nothingness") where the screen freezes up and your opponent becomes slow for a period of time and you can do combos that weren't possible otherwise. For characters who charge their rage meter slowly, they can charge their Mu no Kyouchi meter instead, since it can only be used after you've lost a round and after your life becomes low enough (blue) to activate. You can artificially put yourself into rage mode by doing the rage explosion, which also acts like a "burst" for those GGXX people. However, you can only use Rage explosion/Mu no Kyouchi once per set (after your meter is gone, it's gone for good)

The sword meter or Kenki is another balancing feature. At max meter, your attacks do max damage, every sword attack lowers the meter by some amount so you can't spam some move over and over and have it keep doing max damage (the meter builds back on its own if you just stand still).

Nice stuff, Arc . You were right, though: I didn't really understand the players' mindsets in that game T_T. Are there any common setups, mix-ups, or mind games in that game?

Here are some recent 3s games featuring "OUT" (Q). I highly recommend watching them for anyone who loves to cheer for the underdog. OUT's Q is very impressive.

Personally, I will never cease to be impressed by people who stick to bottom-tier characters. It must take incredible confidence and determination to use a character that has zero chance of placing high in tournaments.

3s - Mekoru (Gouki) vs OUT (Q) - bo3

The appetizer.

+ Show Spoiler [the match] +

3s - OUT (Q) vs Makoro (Chun Li) - bo3

The main course: Garbage Tier vs God Tier. I think most people who attempt this matchup would find it utterly hopeless, but OUT seems to know this matchup very well. Get ready for a very tense battle...

(from SRK) Apparently Japan has tiered Arcana Heart Full:

Arcadia AHF Ranks Feb '08
S: Lieselotte
A: Kamui, Lilica, Heart, Mei-Fang
B: Saki, Konoha, Maori
C: Kira, Yoriko
D: Fiona

Ironically, Fiona and Kira are high-tier at a novice level because they are relatively easy to learn and you can dish out big damage without too much effort (and Fiona >> all when you're first learning to play, thanks to her giant Haohmaru-like hard slash ^^). Supposedly Kira is so low because she has trouble dealing with rushdown, which I agree with based on both my own experience and from watching so many Youtube vids.

Few matchs that don't matter, then Kuroda (Q) vs Justin (Chun Li)

(Starts at 3:40)
is probably the most entertaining match (last round, obviously) i've ever seen. Since you noted you like the Q raping high tiers, i figured i should toss it in here, but you've likely seen it already. Basically Kuroda just flat out disrespects Justin.

You know Kaillera and other such online netplay servers?
Kaillera isn't that bad if you have good conditions for play. I live very near one of the most active north american servers, an d i get 30ms or less, so i can play on excellent without nearly any delay. That said, i really can't play against my european friends, which is pretty limiting. Kaillera does have plenty of very skilled players, though.

Playing home and playing at arcades is like drinking beer home or drinking beer at pubs.
Yes and no. You can learn matchups/combo strings and general gamesense, but execution on a stick is very different from d-pad or keyboard controls. analogue sticks close the gap somewhat, but thumb control vs. needing an entire hand is still a large difference.

For instance; when i do my dp motion on kb. i just do forward, down, forward, and i get full execution. In an arcade setting, however, i often don't transition from forward to down fast enough because i'm not used to arcade play, and end up triggering a qcf instead of dp.

Overall, though, you're right.
The number you have dialed is out of porkchops.

A classic . Interestingly, someone in the Youtube comments wrote:

yep he was toying with him, winning by time out cause Justin Wong beat one of Kuroda's friends through timeout in mvc2 and didnt shake his hand. Likewise here.

which explains a lot.

On a different topic, here's something you don't often see in Arcana Heart:
720 > Wind summon.

Freaking great match!

Oh god, last part of the 2nd match was awesome, that parry to the aegis and the low fierece. And the end of the 3rd game is a nail biter (if you are not paying attention to the progress bar).

I was told that virtua fighter is one of the hardest games at the ultimate competitive level?

Also definitely knew about street fighter.

SSBM is pretty widely played and it's very gosu at the top level. I've hung out with the number 1 english player several times and he is a sight to behold (at the game at least).
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"
