How would you describe learning curve to effcienly achieve eqiuvalent of B-ish iccup rank in HoN. Basically from-zero-to-hero learning guide for sc/bw it would be something like this : 1 basic mechanics - learning building, units, type of units and attacks, key shortcuts 2 learning BOs for basic strategies for given race 3 understanding micro, macro 4 mechanical traning (apm and efficient control, reaction time) 5 timing attacks in each MU

Nothing in HoN or DotA is hard. People who tell you otherwise are idiots themselves. Decision making is the key skill to develop, something apparently 90% of either community lacks.
The rest will come pretty easily with games played.

Even sc2 is a harder game than HoN >.<

Thanks for the info. Looks like there is much more casual gamers in Hon. Much less theorycrafting and overally game is much simpler than sc. Im guessing i should avoid pub games to avoid stroke and hordes of 15yo's with too much time on their hands.
|
Casual isn't the word, casual implies that these players are intelligent with their choices or can listen. Pubs aren't those players, they think what they're doing is right and the only way of doing it because its worked before and that this time is no different. Scrub is a better word imo.
And there is just about as much theorycrafting in HoN/DotA as there is SC, if not more.
One thing you should do is to check the mechanics section for HoN to understand how spells/damage/items interact with each other and amongst each other.

Jesus you're cynical. You must have been playing for a while. I can feel myself becoming more and more like this every month I play hon.

As your game Intelligence goes up so does your arrogance but your tolerance goes in the opposite direction.
And then you start rage quiting and blaming every loss on the crappiest person on your team.
And then you will fit in just fine at teamliquid hon/dota

Basically from-zero-to-hero learning guide If ur starting from zero, u need to: - know how to play with all heroes, skills, items (not excel on all, but know what each one is capable of) - get familiar with the map (from basic stuff like shop locations to tactical spots i.e. above certain ramps, juke spots, ward locations, etc) - know your role: knowing what role you play in your team will make u jump from the status of a pub to a competitive player
well, thats what i got off the top of my head and yeah, if you plan to play seriously (which it sounds like you do), HoN is a team game; rarely do competitive players play 1v1 games... as most of the time, 1v1s only account for the early laning phase in regular games, if at all

else that stuff he said works pretty well.
I'd say learn the map first, if you're good at mechanics you can likely make up for any noob mistakes with some good jukes or timing/placements.
Then i'd start practicing support characters with range, they tend to be the most forgiving for people who aren't too good at last hitting,
Also in game you can always ask what items i should get if you don't know the character if you're playing with tl ppl they will tell you, if you're playing with pubs they could tell you bad shit or rage at you.

Keeper with armor/stats apparently rapes the balls out of defiler. Load really needed to switch arachna to mid imo. Defiler played really poorly though, getting too close to creeps while farming so tree could smack her around before ulting to finish her off =[

HoN/DotA is very unforgiving team game, you can't luck into a kill like you can in Counter-Strike or TF2 and turn the game around, a shitty player on the team will drag the rest of you down. It's carrying in the literal sense. Unless you like losing cause of the same shit over and over again; it's always the same shit too in pubs.
Like in pubs right now, I am sitting at around the fact that I can carry a team with a handful of "broken" late game heroes up to a -12 in kill differential. I would have to play a like a major bitch though, telling idiots to get the fuck out of my lane and to do little farming tricks.
And get out of the mindset of "roles" and get into the mindset of what do I need to do to win, it's not what role you play, it's what I need to do at this given moment.

Yeah definitely should have switched.

So there's a mod that turns trees into marshmallows?

i know you're kidding about mods but there are a few mods that are actually really helpful to newbies. for instance, there's this one mod that makes all ability descriptions concise useful. i.e, for pest/slardar's stun, instead of
Pestilence calls on the aid of his underground insect brethren to strike nearby enemies from underground. Enemies are impaled, causing them to be stunned and take damage, followed by reduced movement speed. it says something like (i don't know exactly, haven't used it)
Stun PBAOE, 350 range, Physical, 20% slow the usefulness of this tapers off pretty quickly though, i'd imagine. but hey, it's out there

Where does everyone find these mods to begin with? Is there a forum where people submit mods ? Only mod I have is the pyromancer -> rick james sound mod :| I know someone posted the PLAGGUUUUU on Plague Rider sound mod when Plague Rider ulted, but I thought it actually worked better on defiler since defiler is the unit that casts plague

That mod is necessary.
This is the official hon forum that has a mod section.
As people have said, most mods are unnecessary and create a bad reliance on them. However, some mods can be useful. I used mods like tower denier (which shows when towers are deniable but unnecessary once you know the hp) and mana costs (shows mana costs for abilities right above them) when I was new to the game. Now I just use mods that should be included in HoN which make things easier. For example: Host drag+drop players for lobby, portrait swap (click on their portrait to swap rather than the little button), ping throttle so noobs can't spam it, and PLAYGU!

10%hp = deniable mod need goes away!
