I don't know if many people on TL still play HoN (I recently just got back into it), but the developers of the game left S2 and created their own company: Frostburn Studios.

Frostburn Studios was created with funding from GArena, and then proceeded to buy out HoN from S2. Basically, S2 is no longer affiliated with HoN, and the game is now handled by the dev team who worked under S2, with funds from GArena.

So one can no longer be S2'ed. Nice.

Best moba, but somehow they ruined it.

Holy shit, didn't know about that. Do they have any plans now for HoN?

Also, that: https://i.imgur.com/9bpWCzM.jpg

Drama, drama. It seems accurate though.

edit: @jxx, they seem pretty serious about it. The takeover happened about a year ago, and in its last year HoN has apparently had a lot happen. This week they released a major patch with a few reworks and a lot of balance changes, and also added a new mode (Capture the Flag).

I guess time will tell. I personally think things can only go upward, as the game HoN itself was always amazing, but kept getting screwed over by its management. Now that the devs are (seemingly) in charge of decision-making too, things could be interesting.

I wouldn't hold my hopes too high though. It is a five year old game. There is only so much one can do. But perhaps Frostburn Studios can release a new and promising game some time in the future. Who knows.

I get your point, but it's pretty different though.

CS:GO brought back Counter-Strike as a franchise, and it took a while. Maybe 2 years or so. Before that, I believe 1.6 was still the most played one (though I could be mistaken, I am a super casual CS player at best).

Furthermore, CS is the corner stone game of competitive FPS. What else do we have? Shootmania? CoD? Ehh. It seems to be that players were wanting to bring back the almighty glory of 1.6, and that plus solid work from the CS:GO people allowed it to happen.

For HoN, it's different. Yes, it's based on Dota, but it's not considered as its rightful successor; that would be Dota 2 obviously. HoN also suffers from a really bad history of horrible business decisions, non-existent marketing schemes, and awkward identity crises.

I mean, I don't know. Maybe it will happen. It definitely looks like HoN is shaping up to be something in SEA, but as far as the West goes, the game is probably done. Maybe it can rise up again in Europe, but it would take tremendous efforts to bring it back to life in North America, where it is beyond dead.

If you have played HoN, it is hard to go and play Dota2 or League, unless you are getting paid to do so.

It is like going from SC BW lowlatency back to a clunky War3 or SC2.

It's not that hard; at least it wasn't for me. Yes I miss the faster speed and sometimes the colors but having 10-15min long queue times just wasn't worth it.

Yeah man Im not saying it will be biggest game in the world most likely, just saying that its possible that it will get bigger and its just my opinion but its superior game to dota/LoL imo I played them all and they felt clunky in comparision (its been a long time ago and maybe they made them better but still I used to play HoN semi pro and the pace mechanics felt muuch better)

so yeah its just me hoping that they can maybe raise the game popularity because game itself deserves it

I still find HoN to be the superior ARTS, yes. Dota 2 isn't so bad though, but it does take some time to get used to the much slower turn speed.

In all fairness, I find Dota 2 slower (although it has been sped up a bit) but a lot more complex. Captains Mode/Captains Draft and certain heroes allow for more strategic depth, and generally heroes tend to rely on more intricate gameplay patterns.

Pretty interesting read. I haven't played HoN in a long time now, but still check it out every now and then on twitch if there's a tournament going on. It's still my favorite moba game by a fair margin.

I'd be very surprised if they somehow manage to bring it back. They had their time to make a huge mark when there was no proper competition. Today if you look at the competitive prize pool, or just que times in general (although apparently they have made changes for que times), I see no reason to play it other than it being fun. And problem with playing a game just because it's fun is that usually these type of multiplayer games are played with several friends at the same time, and generally if you know someone who enjoys moba games they tend to only play 1 at the time, mainly LoL and DoTA2.

I still remember some of the dumb stuff in the game though, like refusing to make it f2p, putting out 6800 silvercoin announcer pack ingame (I think at the time I played the most I could maybe get roughly 750ish silvercoins a month, playing regular matchmaking, not stomping casual mode) online tournaments and streams being delayed a shitton just because EU and US east didn't want to exchange for servers, and for some reason the admins seemed to rarely step in, maybe they were afraid of punishing the few top teams the game had.
Also remember being jelly of how many proper balance patches dota got, while hon changes were far and few between. Like that one time a lot was promised and all we ended up with was a huge minor stat overhaul for all the heroes in the game... I mean, yeah every bit helps, but when every game is pick the same 15-20 heroes when there's 100+ to choose from for months at the time, maybe something drastic needs to chance.
Or they could just listen to the high tier competitive players that played at the time (people like notail etc), that somehow ended up being ignored lol

well they have made the game better then it ever was in the past, its now complete f2p only thing you can buy is skins, which only affects looks. And the playerbase is rising a little its around 100k online most of the time and que times are quite decent at all mmr. Highest mmr being the worst with like 15 min que times.

The game is doing decently, but only thanks to the SEA playerbase. In North America, there are likely less than 10,000 players. Let's say less than 20,000 in Europe. The rest is SEA. It's been gaining a lot of numbers over there, which is good.

As far as the game itself goes, it's pretty pristine though. The business model is excellent, there is no Early Access non sense anymore, it's entirely free-to-play and free-to-own (no free heroes rotations, just play whatever you want) and the only things you can spend money on are cosmetics and vanity. Game's still as fast as ever, and just had a major patch; it also looks like the new developer wants to change a lot of things.

In any case, it looks like S2 is either going to go on without Maliken, or is simply going to die. According to the post I linked in that imgur picture, which seems accurate, Strife is going to get dropped. It certainly would not come as a surprise; the game has been in beta for two years and is still missing some of the key elements on which it was marketed. Two years, still no ranked play, still no proper matchmaking, and more importantly still no karma system. That last one was a huge selling point of Strife, and it has yet to be implemented after two effing years.

To me, that pretty much means the game is doomed to fail. In such a competitive and overcrowded market, a developer can't afford such massive delays. Especially if their game really isn't all that revolutionary to begin with.

Anyway... I never understood S2's decision to make Strife. I honestly think they would have had a better chance of taking on Starcraft II by making a RTS game. My hope is that Frostburn Studios heads that way, rumour is S2 sold the rights to the entire Savage franchise (HoN being a part of that franchise), and the Savage games being RTS, it could happen. HoN is already somewhat old, it probably has a few more years, but it also looks like FB wants to make games after HoN, so we'll see.

It's probably just wishful thinking on my end. :-(
