Given enough time, you can get used to anything. But it won't be fun. I guess I kind of forgot people moving to Dota and LoL to play with friends. If your friends play HoN, no way you ever going to deal with the delay and clunkiness of the other mobas. In the end it hurt the pleasurability more than bad community or bad balance or whatever.
In the end a true gamer wants his games crisp, eventhough mobas are by nature casual games.

I linked that on the last page. And yes, Marc is Maliken. Marc "Maliken" DeForest.
About MOBAs, ehhh. Dota has a pretty steep learning curve.

As far as the game itself goes, it's pretty pristine though. The business model is excellent, there is no Early Access non sense anymore, it's entirely free-to-play and free-to-own (no free heroes rotations, just play whatever you want) and the only things you can spend money on are cosmetics and vanity. Game's still as fast as ever, and just had a major patch; it also looks like the new developer wants to change a lot of things.
In any case, it looks like S2 is either going to go on without Maliken, or is simply going to die. According to the post I linked in that imgur picture, which seems accurate, Strife is going to get dropped. It certainly would not come as a surprise; the game has been in beta for two years and is still missing some of the key elements on which it was marketed. Two years, still no ranked play, still no proper matchmaking, and more importantly still no karma system. That last one was a huge selling point of Strife, and it has yet to be implemented after two effing years.
To me, that pretty much means the game is doomed to fail. In such a competitive and overcrowded market, a developer can't afford such massive delays. Especially if their game really isn't all that revolutionary to begin with.
Anyway... I never understood S2's decision to make Strife. I honestly think they would have had a better chance of taking on Starcraft II by making a RTS game. My hope is that Frostburn Studios heads that way, rumour is S2 sold the rights to the entire Savage franchise (HoN being a part of that franchise), and the Savage games being RTS, it could happen. HoN is already somewhat old, it probably has a few more years, but it also looks like FB wants to make games after HoN, so we'll see.
It's probably just wishful thinking on my end. :-(
Just to clarify, Savage isn't really an RTS, it's an RTS + RPG + Shooter + MOBA all in one. I freaking love Savage 2...
I think that the biggest mistake S2 ever did was taking HoN away from the world/lore of Savage. There was so much potential in it...

In all fairness, I find Dota 2 slower (although it has been sped up a bit) but a lot more complex. Captains Mode/Captains Draft and certain heroes allow for more strategic depth, and generally heroes tend to rely on more intricate gameplay patterns.
HoN feels faster paced and more responsive is all in part due to the turn speed. Once everyone left HoN i couldn't bring myself to play Dota 2 just felt too clunky.
i hope mods dont kill me for bumb Hi!If anyone wanna play Dota 1(Yes) later today pm me here will be on iccup pm me can go with skype will play couple of games have a shit pc now so nothing else i can run and bored from stracraft 1 (sorry) Dont be shy I will feed hard!
However, I have found a community which still plays Dota 1 on Warcraft 3, one of the ways to play is Ranked Gaming Client www.rankedgaming.com
All you need to do is download the client and make an account. Once you have made an account you can access the forums which client of Warcraft 3 you need (and how to get the right one). I play in the Asia server and find that there are always people available to play. There is also a populated Europe server but not as populated as the Asia Server
Another server that is still active is ICCUP, however I am told that it is mainly a Russian Server, but who knows. iccup.com Lastly I found another European server but am not sure how populated it is eurobattle.net

Does Dota 1 have a matchmaking system of some kind? or people still join random custom games where they can be pushed from side to side and whatever happens?

There isn't a matchmaking system from what I can see in RGC. But ICCUP might have it?
They have to shut it down because Valve bought IceFrog and started DotA2. S2 also didn't do the best job at managing HoN but it did have a thriving community and a lot of the top players from there went on to win TIs in DotA2.
HoN served its purpose. It was the placeholder for Dota players before Dota2 became a thing. The game felt great. My personal fav non-Dota heroes were Parasite and Puppet Master. Great concepts of heroes.

I agree, I played HoN before and just after release. It was a great game. Don't really remember why I stopped playing it though

So many great hero ideas there. Deadwood (extremely entertaining ganker) and Rhapsody (really cool support) some of my favorites.
