For some reason, my dwarves won't leave their rooms even when given orders to do other things, such as mine, make stuff, store in stockpiles, etc. Sounds like you gave them burrows. Don't do that - burrows are specified zones that restricts your dwarves' movement, not designations of their homes. =p

It's a great game that has alot of fun to offer but most people tend to avoid it because of either the graphics or the user interface. If you're watching a tutorial video where the person is properly explaining what to do and which buttons do what, you do fine. Staying alive however in things such as Scorching biomes where the skin of your dwarves melts off by boiling rain can be hard. Yes. Boiling rain. REALLY.

Had to build two or three additional carptenter's workshops just to get bed production going. Still working on my underground farm, but it's coming along. I've got an above ground farm to last until I can get the underground one up and running. It really helps to name all your dwarfs, even if it's nonsensical. That way when your immigrants arrive, their names really stand out and you can give them jobs and all that. Otherwise you can have newcomers with skills that aren't being used well.

Yeah I got the Lazy Newb pack, and I'm making good use of Dwarf Therapist. Everything's ok now, it's just hard to keep everyone working.

Just wait until you get an immigration wave of like 20 soap makers*. After a certain point it becomes really hard to keep everyone busy unless you build a giant army or something completely ridiculous. Both of which are great options for fun. *Soap makers are useful now I think actually? They used to be the joke profession because soap was only used for trading.

The best way to keep everyone working if you relly can't find any infrastructure jobs is just to come up with some massive project, and get everyone else working on that (digging out a massive underground fortress, building a massive tower, manning pumps, etc.)

Right now, I've got a wonderful little group going, about 40 strong. I have 100% forgot about military needs, as in I have no weapons and only leather armor (bought some sick leather, like rino and leopard, and other crazy animals O.o yay for human traders!) And at the moment, I have it saved at the moment a goblin ambush has been started. I have no gate/bridge/walls, and I have debated my next course of action over the day. I'm going to watch and laugh as my dwarfs all die a silly death, or be amazed as the only dude with an axe, and my hunter 2 man a full squad of goblin troops. It will be bloody. It will be...."FUN"
