Veterancy is a snowball mechanic, it just is. But some interesting ideas about this socketing and its use in team games. As ever I mean we haven’t seen the other factions, or much of the game at all, but some sound ideas there. My one concern is making the game unintuitive. In SC2 I can look at a fight and immediately know/factoring in upgrades what force I can and can’t take, all being well. If you end up with tons and tons of buff/debuff combos with this socketing system, you’ll potentially lose that readability. It’s so obvious it’s rarely mentioned but getting an accurate gauge of ‘I can/can’t kill that’ at a glance is a crucial part of a good RTS, or most games involving killing things. If you can’t quickly parse that you can’t make good informed decisions with the other systems and it gets messy Is it too much to ask that they repost updates on somewhere like here rather than Reddit?

You don't like the cesspit? ![]() I too would very much like it if they had a platform of some kind that wasn't reddit. Overall not a fan of veterancy for units. It's hard to balance if you have distinct faction identities, and does massively affect the `judge the fight' thing. For example, in SC2, Colossi vs marines / lings would just be a nightmare to balance with veterancy. Sockets are fine in that regard, I think. If it's only one or two buffs from a hero unit, and confined to things other than 1v1, then I'm not worried.

In TA:K all units can "level up" after enough unit kills and will appear to have gold shoulder pads or something else like that showing they are veteran (with I think 2 different levels above standard? silver then gold parts?). They would typically deal a bit more damage and have some more HP. In some cases maybe gain an ability, such as expansive dragon units (maybe these were unique too, can only have one big dragon at a time). Typically I think veterancy would be unlikely to cause much issues if the bonuses given to leveled up units are pretty small or small enough. You could even imagine it giving a purely cosmetic effect lul but could be more ambitious. Simple +1 (or +5%) to damage and +10 (or +5%) to hp kind of stuff seems pretty safe. A more RPG-centered game or with less units could do with more advanced system..

They really need to ditch Reddit asap though. I just think that now is probably not the time. Are they are working on their web site? Idk. Good point. Official forums on their website could be nice, as much as people meme on blizzard forums I kinda like it.

toward the beginning of the announcement i advocated for a SG-specific forum. there are a lot of advantages but the main one is working toward decentralizing from the huge platforms for a bit more agency. if this twitter/reddit bullshit has taught us anything, it's to take control of your channels of communication. these big tech companies are extremely unstable. even all the content creators on youtube and twitch are basically just working for massive corporations who can decide at any moment how to "alter the deal" (i would imagine many of these people see themselves as entrepreneurs, but they're essentially employees of the biggest companies in the world, who give them bits of ad revenue here and there). Point is, places like TL have always been reliable for discussion about the games first and foremost, without much volatility. I think a Stormgate-specific forum, or even Frost Giant general forum, would put a lot of these anxieties to rest. I'm obviously not in the know about TL's plans, but I'd be surprised if it suddenly became the go-to for all things Stormgate any time soon.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tbh I wasn’t even thinking of the NDA but rather I’ve been in the position of having private info many times but I have always liked to discuss things on public forums too, so I’ll just make arguments for the thing I know to already be the case, or “speculate” on why something is when I actually know that’s exactly why it is. (Edit: hilarious when I’ve been downvoted etc in these cases) That’d be my modus operandi personally. In any case this will inevitably be an awkward time to discuss the game publicly when the community is split. It’s not really a big deal either way. I’d rather have access than not but I’m desperately trying to improve my piano skills before another video game sucks the time away lol so this is probably for the best. I’ve got lessons starting in late August :O

I'm anxious to see if there are any alterations to the whole bio/mech vibe we're getting, a design direction that seems pretty similar to Terran in SC. Part of me would love to see SG fully embrace mechs across the board, partially from a logic standpoint xD (i think the Lancer is really cool but I don't really understand it). I also felt really drawn to the larger mechs just visually, like the Vulcan and the Atlas, as far as their battlefield clarity and overall design/skills. I'm sure there are gameplay reasons for bio being in the game but I'm curious about the actual logical/lore reasons for it. I can say that if I were to sign up to fight in the Vanguard army (what they're called now I think), I'd apply to the Vulcan academy all the way. Who would want to be a marine? xD (in SC the marines were criminals forced to fight, no?) Either way, looking forward to the next updates. I'm selfishly hoping it'll inform the drawings/content I'm working on ^^
