don't think that's the criteria for getting a key, buddy.
but i have a feeling we'll be in alpha/beta for 1-2 years so it's no sweat
i am also not in and my favorite color is green. not to mention i own 7 copies of warcraft 3 and buy recycled toilet paper. can't believe it

Stormgate is built on Unreal 5. How many other RTS games are built in Unreal 5? If that # is low then Frost Giant will be stressing the engine in unique ways and should bugs unique to an RTS game arise Frost Giant may have to rely on Epic to fix them. That ain't good.

I don’t think that 2 years from now anyone will think “I got screwed by not getting in early enough” so don’t let it bother you.

haha. man, I bet FG doesn't even know i'm driving around in my 25 year-old station wagon with a megaphone, screaming unit names and damage values out the window. Why is it only the ONline marketing that matters to people? Unbelievable.
srsly tho, i was thinking about it/self-preserving and thought that FG might want to limit the competitive players/tryhards/diehards in the first test. Maybe they're trying to gauge the interest level of casual players over time, like do they stop playing for x reason. These first tests might also be trying to measure the strength of the features that are supposed to help incoming players, like auto-hotkeys and general U.I. stuff.
what i'm trying to say is if you got into the closed alpha you're a noob. jk. but seriously

Disclaimer - I am not on the alpha but from what I’ve seen through psychic manifestations.
It looks pretty good from what I’ve seen. Unit responsiveness looks good, elongated battles which is nice.
300 supply cap, which is interesting. Not seen anything get too near that yet. But in theory it should make it easier to end games with an overwhelming eco advantage, as well as perhaps bolstering very defensive, attritional turtle styles. Interested to see how it shakes out.
Stuff pops reasonably well and looks distinctive, sound and response is pretty good too.
Creeps of varying levels giving vision/eco boosts etc look quite interesting, and you can reclaim some too. They seem to respawn/upgrade at various intervals too so there’s incentives to get contesting them and being active all over the map.
Few minor UI issues. For example it’s way less clearly defined where you can/can’t place your town hall vS the gold mine thing than it is where you can place a nexus/hatch/CC next to resources.
Default hotkey layout (currently only hotkey layout) looks well thought out. Very anchored around where your fingers would be with WASD in FPS
Balance I’m unsure we’ll get much useful info this build. Without replays and without (overt) sharing of info and tricks we’re maybe out of luck on tuning. Nothing like the hive mind to find the BS
Getting quite converted. Im pretty confident this will be good, it’s quite how good that’s very up in the air

Played some last night but something is off with my client. I am getting 40-50 fps max with a high end 4090 gaming PC, no matter the settings. Wasn't a lot of fun like that.

Sounds good! Hotkey wise, I have only seen Showtime play around IJKL instead of the WASD based grid system in SC2. Should be customizeable anyway so not a biggie

Do you think this incentivizes splitting up your army and hitting multiple creep camps at once? Or are you better off keeping your army all together?

Do you think this incentivizes splitting up your army and hitting multiple creep camps at once? Or are you better off keeping your army all together? It’s honestly difficult to tell at this stage.
The vision creeps are similar kinda to a Xel’Naga watchtower, except you claim it by killing the creeps and you get that bonus until your opponent comes to reclaim
At least on the one map played thus far the vision creeps didn’t seem that useful. Not sure if it’s a positional thing, a map thing or what but in the games I was observing they rarely gave a sufficient bonus on vision range to spot most attacks.
Most games I saw were characterised by army movement being very much in the fog of war for both players.
The bonus resource creeps, again it’s super hard to tell as there’s no replays to analyse and how they fit into boosting a standard build.
There’s little BO optimisation thus far and it’s quite improvisational so it’s really hard to gauge certain things.
What I’ve seen so far is that creeps will be impactful but it’ll take a while to figure it out, most players are SC2 vets and you see some notable names. So folks haven’t quite figured out how to bring the creeping element in and are sorta just playing SC2 games. WC3 veterans will find it natural no doubt but many other RTS players won’t.
I think it’s super promising, more so than I was expecting tbh.
Also the creeps do respawn, but at higher levels so it’s not just a case of claiming areas and sitting on them forever. And you might have to devote more resources to claim a level 3 camp over a level 1, that kinda thing

Played all night last night. It kind of makes me crazy to not have replays haha. Sometimes I just get rolled by 2x the army when I thought I was ahead all game and can't look what the other guys have been doing differently.
What was amazing to see was the meta updating within minutes. You see one cool strategy the first time, adopt it, only to find that the very next player and every one after does the same thing.
Also, clearly only RTS nerds signed up for the alpha. The level of play is pretty nuts. Have not played a single person that doesn't have a clue.

The era of BW before there were replays was pretty wild. I was not very good at the time but also there was so much unknown about how to optimize economy and macro back then. So you got a lot of scenarios like you describe: you think you are playing competently and then the other guy has literally double what you have. Then you gg and that’s that.
I am excited to work on optimizing build orders in a fresh game. I hope there’s enough depth in build orders to do so. It’s one fear of mine with this game is that early build orders are too simplified. Or that some complexity is possible but the options aren’t balanced so there is one de facto build order. They need to make sure there’s always tension between investing in econ or not. I think that’s the key component to creating build variety. Ideally every worker built (or any other investment in econ) is a decision, not a foregone conclusion

And then the balance between all possible tech choices and unit compositions vs the opponent's throughout the course of the game. Not an easy equation : o But the ingredients for deep RTS.

Nony in there shaving milliseconds off his build while the rest of us drunkenly eat Domino's and rally B.O.B.s across the map.

Born on boards, NPCs with some character that would frequently freak out and scream ‘They’re everywhere!’ and run off for no reason. I will concede this is a very personal and nonsensical gripe :p
Are turrets still ridiculously broken? 100% salvage mang plus they’re super low the tech tree.
Creep more effectively than low tier units and you can just reclaim the cost?
Surely the first thing for the nerfhammer?

never heard of marathon. looks cool. bungie can make a game
born on boards. imagine kids being made fun of for being born on boards, like mudbloods in harry potter. kids can be so mean. but wait, it would have to be the adults making fun of the kids at that point. maybe a snotty kid is complaining about his cold dinner, some kind of tube paste, and he gets "BOB'd" by his Earth mom. maybe i should just go check out the game
anyways yeah, nerf turrets. WAY too strong right now. i've lost all my games in my head to them. very frustrating.

Sounds great. But they really messed up expectations with thatt TLO game, huh?
Do you think gameplay can still be quite volatile based on build-orders? In that game it felt like TLO had more stuff the entire game and the game was effectively over after the first few minutes.
In contrast, what I am hoping for is a larger percentage of games that goes to states where larger army population are scattered all across the map.

Let along some zoomer with no beta / alpha experience will come around dominate the scene as usual anyway, LOL.
