As was previously said. If you don't have the HD edition of AoE 2 with DLCs, get it. Then there will be ~18 new campaigns you never played before.

I've recently started watching AoE II and it's been great!
Can anyone recommend a community website for AoE? I've tried looking around but with no success so far.

+ Show Spoiler +I was playing this DE, overall really nice I think. It has matchmaking with simple solid ELO, a nice variety of maps. Mods can be installed, can customize lots of things, graphics are really good. Imo it's very nice in team games I especially enjoyed 2vs2. I recommend. oh wait I was talking about AoE2 DE, haven't actually tried AoE1 DE yet yea ended up switching to unwanted w10 cause of hardware incompatibility with w7^^

I think aoezone.net is what you looking for, it's the biggest AoE community page I think. It's forum structure is kinda confusing however. There is also aoe2 reddit
I picked up the DE in december and didn't stop playing till now. I played AoE2 as a kid but I never knew how good of a game it really is. So many strategies that you can play, but it's also quite demanding and there is alot to learn when you start. Also I think teamgames are way more fun than in SC2 or WC3. It has also grown alot on twitch and the community there is great and the streamers are all fun to watch.
I can only recommend buying the DE version. If you already have HD from 2013 it's only ~15€ and it is a giant improvement (HD was kind of a ripoff compared to this). You get all the DLCs from the HD Version + a new DLC that came out with DE. The graphics are MUCH better, it's not like the typical HD remakes where they just optimize the old graphics for new screen resolution. They actually improved all the models a ton, while still maintaing the original look. There is also much less lag when playing online, you have a matchmaking ELO system, all the comfort features you could ask for in a modern rts. It's simply perfect.

wish it had a out of game chat^^

I switched from Starcraft to AoE DE mainly because watching Starcraft became really stale lately. AoE has way more appeal in terms of strategy and tactics.

AoE or AoE2? Because while I love AoE for nostalgia reasons, AoE2 is imo a much greater competitive game. Hell playing AoE is at times really painful due to the pathing.

Check out this thread: https://www.liquiddota.com/forum/games/559264-red-bull-wololo-aoe2-de-tournament
I Could just quote a few posts, but it would be better for you just to read it whole.
If you're wondering if the meta has changed since then, the short answer is "no". There have been some balance changes to certain civs yes, but the overall big picture stays the same.
You advance to feudal on around 21/22 pop (including the free scout) and then from there, you choose to either: 1) do a fast castle age to - a) boom to 3 (or 4, but it's extremely greedy) Town Centres
- b) actually build a castle and produce your unique civilization unit
- c) do a knight rush
2) start 2-archery range archers production in feudal 3) do a scout rush (5-6 units) in feudal
Obviously it's much more nuanced than that, but that's the basic idea in a nutshell.
Here is a PDF with good build orders that can help you establish fundamentals: https://ufile.io/m2a6prw5
I suggest picking one (like 23 pop archers) and then doing 2 things: 1) downloading in-game through the mods menu "Interactive Build Order Guide" and enabling it in "game mode" as a custom scenario in a standard game 2) actually trying to execute the said build order vs an AI opponent.

edit: It also has these ingame challenges like sc2 used to have back in the day. Like how to max out, what is a good opening build order etc, with introduction videos from pro's explaining why to do what in which way. You find it in AoE 2 DE start menu somewhere if you look around.

Thanks very much guys, apparently my PC can’t run it yet but looking to upgrade! Seems weirdly high system reqs for an isometric sprite-based RPG
We did a for fun AoE tournament recently and was quite fascinating to see the game knowledge of the AoE guys intersecting with the superior mechanics of the SC veterans, made me want to give it a proper go!

So I guess some of the GPU shaders are missing on a few built in GPU?
