It would be cool to see more third party support. The Switch is fine so far in that regard, but a lot of the titles have been older games ported over. If they announce that something like the new Tomb Raider or Red Dead 2 or something like that is getting a Switch release, that would go a long way to increasing people's confidence in the system.

Nintendo's been seen as a "secondary system" for 3 generations now (people primarily game on PC/Playstation/XBox, and play Nintendo for first parties and indies) so it would be interesting if they broke out of that

With Doom, I felt "Wow, anything can come out on the Switch." Having say Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out on it would really solidify that feeling

Of course, I'd be happy and excited with Pokemon and Smash footage, but they pretty much already have my money. Don't know how much of a win it is if they're selling me on a game that I've pretty much already bought

The system doesn't have the horse power for Red Dead Redemption 2, so I doubt that is going to make it onto the system. And its rock star. We will see a lot of older games come to the switch. But current generation games are not going to go for the all platforms launch that often, if ever.

I don't think Nintendo has the scale to compete with Sony and Microsoft in terms of console horsepower. They compete on form factor and creativity. That's why they've been hit or miss every generation recently.

I want more third party support, but I'm looking for the kind of third party games that I see on the 3DS. The Persona series is probably the only console series I care about that I'm hoping gets on the system someday. I would rather have the big western developers focus on creating something like Mario vs Rabbids or whatever the name is rather than porting their most graphics intensive AAA shooters on to the system.

I am one of those people who got a Switch as a secondary system to my PC. However, there have been times where I've played my DS/3DS more than my PC for months at a time.

Nintendo could easily make a console to match Sony or Mircosoft but why would they? They pretty much control the portable gaming genre as well as have the lead in creativity in gaming as a whole right now. Why mess with a winning formula, so far.

This year alone could easily see Nintendo become #2 in the Console world due to the Switch.

Could they match console power though?

I'm pretty sure microsoft is still a titan in terms of financial power, and Sony is also a big name that carries some weight outside of gaming. Sure, Nintendo is huge in gaming, but sony and microsoft have other assets to draw from.

I know that Nintendo could be fine with the Switch being "first party + indies," but the gap is close enough between Switch and XBox One that if there's enough of a market, devs may decide to downscale their game enough to fit on the Switch. Doom doesn't perform as well on Switch, but it's still a decent Doom experience. And I think Wolfenstein will be the same. It'll be interesting to see other third parties try to have nerfed versions of their games on the Switch. Having WWE2K18 like performance is unacceptable, but I think a lot of AAA games can afford to have low res, low texture 30 FPS version of their games on Switch

I know that some demanding games may not be possible on Switch, no matter how low res you go. I'm just interested to see how many new games can be scaled down to meet some lower spec systems. Having a low spec bad graphics mode for games could also help the PC market a little bit, with how out-of-hand graphics card pricing is these days

he lack of AAA games is not about power, is more about games weren't being developed for the system because why would you?

WiiU failure is the reason, while i reckon that i saw the Switch potential right from the reveal (they got that right) it wasn't going to be easy to tell investors and game developers to put their games on the Switch. WiiU made everyone second thought about support a different system from Nintendo, it was down to Nintendo to show that the Switch is a capable system that can sell (I hardly believe developers actually care about power if they are selling millions) games.

Everyone was afraid of another failure by Nintendo, would you be that supportive of a system if history told you otherwise? At least I would not have supported the Switch right away considering what happened with the WiiU, is that simple.

Now that the Switch is a super success we have started to see more and more games coming, and we should see even more in the future.

It's still possible for the 3rd party flow of games to dwindle. Nintendo has a clear strategy, a strong lineup of games coming and has learned from the Wii U. As Purind said they'll be fine with just that and indies. But to me it still seems that most 3rd party AAA game sources are not going full-on hype on the Switch yet. Whether it's justified or not, I don't know, but it's the feeling I get.

Some big ports have been committed to. But we've also heard a lot of "You know, this game has been developed with the more powerful consoles in mind, so it would be hard to adapt it to the Switch".
I'm personally disappointed that Capcom hasn't said anything about Monster Hunter on the Switch (for the whole world xD).

AAA games currently mean AAA graphics and not necessarily AAA gameplay. Devs are making up for a lack of creativity by constantly pushing graphics upwards. It's harder to develop a new game for a console like the Switch where you can't get away with creating games developed by the finance folks. Somebody actually has to *gasp* come up with something creative. Otherwise, all they can come up with is porting last gen's games to the Switch.

I think Sony may still be struggling outside of the games division but Microsoft has money to spare. Both companies are willing to lose money subsidizing consoles while Nintendo wants to make money on the hardware side. Microsoft is content making any money off the Xbox division as it doesn't drive the share price. Investors will take any number that's not a big loss. Their Azure division is growing steadily. The company is primarily a b2b company.

So would you guys recommend the switch? Might have an hour each day of travel time by train and am thinking about picking one up (or a 3ds).

To be fair most AAA titles are very polished in terms of gameplay, you almost never thing "well, that's really badly balanced/unfair/stupid/...". They don't leave known paths, but it's not like they don't have development time and game devs who know their job and are usually really good with the motivational psychology as well.

The Switch is newer but you may or may not want to lug around something that huge. I've only played one game so far (Xenoblade Chronicles 2) and I've mostly done so docked. For reference, the only "console" I played frequently last gen was the 3DS so I'm a handheld player at heart. I think I bought a total of 2 games for a hand me down PS3 that I got from somebody else.

If you're going to buy one primarily for travel, I recommend testing out the form factor and see if you like it. I noticed that a mall in my area a few months ago had an area where people could try playing the Switch. This was before the holidays though.

It depends on how much time you play it portable.
Monster Hunter would be great on it. Solo stuff on your home. Pick it up and go to a friend couch to hunt togheter. Also long trip hunting.

It's true that some of the more demanding games simply can't work, but I think there's a lot of room to downscale the graphics to make it work for the Switch. Compare Low settings in any modern PC game with Ultra settings. The Ultra settings is so much more demanding than low and looks noticeably (but not hugely) better.

So if other consoles are low-ish medium, maybe Switch could be low on everything and it'll run at 25-30 FPS with some stutters.

I would imagine the more CPU intensive games (I guess massive open-world games) might be impossible for the Switch. Either way, with the breakout success of the Switch, it'll be interesting to see what kind of magic devs can work on such an underpowered system.

I would look at the current 3DS lineup and what's been announced, then assume that no other games are on the horizon. Anything new that comes out that's awesome is just bonus.

As of RIGHT NOW, the 3DS is better. The Switch is more futureproof in the sense that we know Nintendo and other devs are going to support it for many years to come. With the 3DS... Nintendo says they'll support it, but we just don't know how much more there is left in the system

I'm plenty hyped about the Switch and things are looking very nice for the next year or so, but there's still room to disappoint. The 3DS is really good right now. There's no room for disappointment. Lots of awesome stuff is already out for it, and even if everything gets cancelled and zero games come out for the 3DS, I'd still say it's a great system

Does splatoon have local multiplayer? I found that it has local multiplayer if you own multiple switches and multiple games but does it have multiplayers with the same system? So I can battle agaisnt a friend or alternatively, play with that friend, online, from the same switch?

I am pretty sure it doesn't. It's the main reason I never bought splatoon

Yeah it doesn't [Phantom], the Wii U version had some primitive form of it but it has been removed in Splatoon 2.
