I haven't played Disgaea 5, but I've played the first two. It's a strategy RPG, along the lines of Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem (not as hardcore, no perma deaths). Whether you like it depends a lot on whether you like the setting. It's a quirky angels vs demons storyline with quirky anime humor. I find it a mixed bag. I really loved Disgaea 1 and thought the characters were charmingly cheesy and everything was super fun. Disgaea 2 was super anime cliche and I hated it (even though the gameplay itself was really good and overall an improvement). I don't know anything about D5 and was wondering what people thought of it. I'm interested in it, but after playing Disgaea2, it really could go either way for me.

Disgaea post-games feel completely different from a regular playthrough of the game. The story is quick-paced and you can breeze through it at a good pace. After you beat the game, there's an extensive post-game that's super grindy and you'll spend hundreds of hours getting perfect items, leveling, getting higher skills etc... I imagine D5 is no different. Just have no clue how good the story/characters/dialogue is

As for RPG's, try out the demo for Octopath Traveler. It's not out yet. All we know is 2018 release, and they've announced that the OST is complete so I imagine it can't be that far out. Don't know if you have a 3DS, but it's very similar to Bravely Default. Well... just get the demo and try it out. I can explain it but it's better to just try it and see how it plays. Music is A+.


i absolutly loved tactics ogre and fire emblem and for the grind i finished both agarest in full, multiple times so i'm not too afraid of it

i liked bravely default on 3ds but didn't finish it sadly, i got bored towards the end but i still think it was a great game i was just not in the mood anymore.

you know what, they are so rare those days i totally forgot to check the demo and there is D5, lost sphere and octopath there so i'll just download all of that and see if i like them.

I do not know if the Switch can handle 3DS ports, but Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology comes out in like a week and a half and I would recommend it if you have never played it. Its a remaster of the original one for the DS/3DS, is a very well rounded JRPG. It is one of my favorite games, up with FF6, FFT, Chrono Trigger, and the like.

I never heard of that radiant stuff, but these are patrician taste games. So i guess i will check that radiant.

Radiant Historia is a gem of a game for the DS and I'm totally going to get the 3DS rerelease even if the character art has become more.....generic.

Upon recommendation, I tried Radiant Historia. Characters and battle mechanics seem great... but is the core narrative actually tedium-centric? So far, it's been "Hey make a choice!"... "Ooooh wrong choice (for entirely obscure or arbitrary reasons), better interact with the plot device to go explore content and dialogue you've already been through to see what changed!"

...then I quit. I assume it isn't always like that, or is like that in an approachable way... but a game that has fast-forward-dialogue as a necessary component of gameplay seems like a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad idea.

Xenoblade 2 is getting better and better, once you get a few blades, more accessories and aux cores, you can start building a team on your own.

I did take my time but things start to go WAY up around mid chapter 3

Chapter 4 and the start of Chapter 5 are so much better overall

I'm just at the start of Chapter 5 at around 40 hours but I've done a lot of sidequests and development

Around 1/3 into the game i would say considering there are 10 chapters

I like to do sidequests as I go instead of doing them all at the same time later in the game. I'm just hoping the earlier chapters are shorter.

Just started chapter 6 this morning and I feel exactly the same (fuck Tora, even with jap voices, this guy is a pain...)
As far as JRPG goes, I'm enjoying this one so much more than FF15 (different games I know but that's the last one I had played before XC2)

I decided to check it out on your recommendation. Not far into it, but so far it's damn good. Time travel is weird and confusing, but I'm hooked. The characters are good. The music is Godly, and the battle system is interesting

I was starting to lose interest in jRPGs. The last 3 I played on the 3DS were somewhere between BLAH and MEH. I thought maybe it was just me and not the game's fault and that I was just growing out of jRPGs, but I'm hooked again

Have you tried Shin Megami Tensei?
The 3DS has SMT4 and SMT4:Apocalypse from the main line. Plus a port of a TRPG spinoff.
Soon a improved version of the SMT Strange Journey will also release on 3DS

I would put Radiant Historia easily above SMT4. I'm of the school that battle systems don't have to be ultra-complicated. A simple, interesting gimmick is enough. The two pathways time travel gimmick is pretty unique and cool too. And it isn't full of all the annoying anime tropes that infest jrpg nowadays. That's probably why it didn't sell that well in Japan, unfortunately.

Those Switch Toy-Cons look cool. I was one of those nerds in school who got an A in Math and F in Home Econ, though. I'm terrible with my hands, unless in involves a keyboard, mouse or controller.

Yeah, I've played SMT4 (not Apocalypse) and the DS ones (Devil Survivor and Strange Journey). Love all of them and love the fact that all of them are different, despite having the same angel vs demon sort of theme. SMT4 can be hella frustrating though when the enemy crits you and gets like 18 million turns in a row and you just have to sit there and watch as your team dies.

I've been becoming a bigger and bigger fan of the more dungeon crawley stuff ever since playing Etrian Odyssey. EO4 was Godly, but EO5 was a huge disappointment

Looking forward to SMT5, despite knowing literally nothing about it

EO4 was kind of exceptionally easy for the series. It's the best intro to the series, but it's not my favorite, particularly in terms of postgame stuff.

EO3 is still my favorite, though I haven't had time to properly play EO5 and pass judgment on it. What was disappointing to you about it?
