That and a VR unveil would be at E3, I would think the Pokemon RPG would also be at E3 as well.

The Switch isn't powerful enough for VR.

Oh, of course not. Like I said, I didn't think it was VR and it'd be terrible if it was. I like Nintendo and don't want to see them hurt themselves. VR just seems like exactly their kind of poison.

Although side note, people run VR on phones, don't they? Not, you know, well, but they do it. Not necessarily as today's announcement, but I could see them trying to do some phone VR stuff.

Also, Nintendo doesn't want VR until it's more accessible

they are thinking about 4K but they still think the technology isn't that popular enough

These 2 things aren't new, they released the Wii without HD capabilities because at the time (2005-2006) HD was JUST starting to be a thing and it took years for it to become a popular technology.

That and the only company pushing into the headwinds is Sony with the PSVR. Nintendo could be playing it safe while they watch and learn from Sony and the small studios working solely on VR.

They're selling this shit very expensive too. Like $70-$80 for a cardboard sculpture + (probably very cheap-to-make) game.

I think this is pretty neat but it's not for me.

It seems like a cool idea. Reminds me a little bit of Lego Mindstorms, or Raspberry Pi.

If they release enough stuff to let people get real creative instead of a few "proof of concept do-this-do-that" kits, I could see this getting big.

So it seems the cardboard house is Nintendo's first foray into VR.

Toy-Con House: By inserting various assembled blocks into openings in the sides and bottom of the House, you can interact with, play games with and feed a cute creature on the front-facing Nintendo Switch screen. Each differently shaped block is detected by the IR Motion Camera on the Right Joy-Con inserted on top of the House.

Nintendo is a toy company, let's not forget that

And assuming god marketing this could potentially sold Switch consoles to little kids and families, i mean, people pay more than a 1000 for a phone, what's $70?

i might buy one just to see how it is, i mean, the piano one is something else, and i definitely want to try the robot one

The reason it's 70+ dollars is that each Labo comes with a cartridge.

The Labo platform is defined by three key characteristics, according to Nintendo: make, play, and discover. The product itself comes in the form of a kit that includes a Nintendo Switch cartridge and a series of cardboard sheets, along with a handful of other building accessories like string and plastic connectors. After you pop the cartridge into the Switch, a series of on-screen instructions on the tablet take you through the steps for building each of the different accessories, which Nintendo is calling Toy-Con (a play on the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers). It’s a setup that is particularly well-suited to parents playing with their children; one person can handle the instructions, while the other builds.

Also:

Right now the focus is on kids, and creating a social experience that can also be enjoyed with friends and family. That’s one of the reasons the Toy-Con are made of cardboard; it’s not only easy to manipulate, but something kids can customize with markers and paint afterwards. (Nintendo isn’t commenting right now on whether it will offer replacement parts if your cardboard piano gets squashed.) If Labo proves successful, it’s possible we could see more complex kits aimed at older audiences; Fils-Aimé notes that “I do think there is an opportunity for this to go quite broad from an age-perspective.”

I would be livid if I was a parent, which I'm thankfully not.

It's essentially a bundle of niche gaming accessories. If it were made of normal material, the price of one might cost the same as this whole bundle. Some of the accessories are going to be highly entertaining and cool, I'm sure. And those are the ones that will break in a week, because that's why people don't sell things made from cardboard and rubber bands.
And now your kid wants a replacement, he's sad about it. And are you going to buy another $70 bundle of cardboard (plus a cartridge), most of which you don't need? Are they selling replacement boards on the cheap? Are you going to make it yourself, so now you're obligated to build cardboard projects to save yourself a wasted $70?

Nightmare product. Parents with active children should shield them from knowing it exists.

They already announced replacement for the cardboard

i don't know, depends on the type of cardboard, not every single cardboard is using aliexpress cardboard

Also

"Note that the kits will not be mandatory - although the cartridge is needed - since Nintendo plans to offer the cardboard design pattern for free for aspiring builders"
