For me the two titles that would make me buy the console would either be a good Metroid or a good F-zero. I liked FE a lot more on handheld so far. I have zero trust in Nintendo that smash NX is gonna top melee, if they make one. I'd prolly buy it for a big pokemon-rpg, but that would be a first on a "home" console.
Overall I've got to say that the handheld series have a lot more draw for me.
If you're a handheld fan and liked the Advance Wars series, a fantasy themed spiritual successor is in the works.

what a review honestly
Having played several hours of this game with a friend yesterday, I completely agree with this review.
We had a blast running around and exploring the world with only a hint of direction as to what the "main quest" actually was. Exploring for shrines, taking out small bokoblin encampments, climbing and gliding around the world, collecting resources (pretty much all related to cooking as far as I could tell), talking to random NPC's, all of it was a blast and seemed just as engaging as the hint of the main story we got.
Shrines are like bite sized dungeons. They are just enough to give you the taste of some puzzle and exploring your abilities (which you get a lot of almost right off the bat). I generally found that I wished they could be longer, but since they always left me wanting more it was that much more satisfying tracking down the next Shrine in the over-world. There also seems to be at least one "hidden" chest in each shrine which rewards you with less than common quality equipment and sometimes rupees.
Having easily lost 4-5 hours exploring one or two of the zones, with a brief excursion to an area that felt like a significantly greater challenge combat wise, I expect this game can easily give most players a solid 30-50 hours of enjoyment. Hard to say what the replay value of the game might be right now though.
I'm kinda wishing I had gone ahead and picked up my own switch and copy of Zelda just to get the chance to really sink my teeth into BotW. However, I think in a couple weeks Switch owners are going to find themselves without much incentive to be using their new counsels. I also got the chance to try 1,2, Switch and the new Bomberman and while Bomberman is a good callback to the original I just don't see any other the other software besides Zelda being worth it right now. I'm probably going to keep my "wait and see" approach and get the Switch somewhere down the line when there is a bit more reason to invest into the new system.
Shrines get bigger the further into the game you get.
Nice, Advance wars in fantasy sounds like fun. How much does/doesn't the switch support indie-devs?
Btw I really like the pseudo-handheld idea, Nintendo has a lot of experience with handheld consoles and their home consoles have been lacking a bit recently. Also a lot of their handheld series like Pokemon, FE (only played the one with Ike on home console), Advance wars, Phoenix Wright and Castlevania (except SotN) (both Konami though) didn't really work well on console or only got some half-assed games (Pokemon) but were always great on handheld. Playing my stuff in HD at home and in lower reso on the move without problems with transfering safe files sounds really nice as well. But the battery time should be at least 3, ideally 7 hours+ for it to be a real "handheld" console. I mean the sole purpose of handheld consoles is to be mobile with it and play on trips etc. First reviews talked about 1 hour of battery time, which is enough for short bus trips (for which the console is too big), but not for actually being on the road. Also batteries get worse over time, so if we end up at half an hour that's barely worth carrying around.
As someone who's not the biggest fan of open world titles I'm not that interested in BotW.
Nintendo is jumping all over indie developers for this game. Earlier in the thread I posted a recent video Nintendo made that was around 20min long just showing off a bunch of indie games.

First: i really want to play Zelda. But.
Second: man the performance is bad. Like, there's neither a way nor a reason to try and sugarcoat this. It's awful. Yes, there's stretches where the game runs 30fps, but there's entire zones (especially if raining) where it drops below 15fps. And not just rarely.
I mean, come on. Zelda should've been the reason to get a switch over the Wii U, performance. I don't care for 900p, if i can play on 720p without drops (assuming it does, didn't look into it yet).
It's drops to 20 fps because of how it's coded, not 15. Basically any time there are frame drops for longer than a split second the game will force itself to run at the next closes stable framerate i.e 20 frames. That's why it seems so bad when it's raining, because it can't stay locked at 30 it decides to lock itself at 20 instead. The Wii U version has the same problem.
I noticed it runs much better in handheld mode, but FPS drops this bad in combat are more than just a nuisance, they kind of break the immersion every time for me.
I didn't bother to read through this thread as I just saw it pop up. But has anyone had any good experiences with this console? It was one of the least exciting things I've seen released in recent years for me.
I am just surprised that Nintendo allows for the frame drops, they have to be the most consistent game maker in their games (just look how ground breaking on Metroid Prime games, people wrote thesis on their technicality in them).
i wish i can play it myself to say if it actually affects me. But ya the frame drops is true.
Grabbed a switch and zelda (around 500usd total) Apparently there's already an aftermarket mod that boost the battery life two fold. (Didn't get it since it will remove the warranty).
The seller also warn me of the fps drop in zelda, apparently it's more predominate in dock mode.
I can already see it collecting dust like my Vita but hoping a monster hunter game to come out soon.
Gonna give some thoughts on things in detail next week

As somebody who has little in the way of disposable income, this is the best use of $500 I've had outside of getting certain pieces for my PC.

I'm surprised as well, mostly because I'd expect Nintendo to sacrifice graphical quality even at the slightest sign of performance loss. They know full well that people don't play their games for cutting edge graphics and cutting back on graphics would lose them way less players than FPS drops given their usual audience.
Those who did get their hands on a Nintendo Switch should check out Game Rant’s guide for expanding storage on the console, especially since games like highly-acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild take up nearly half the available native storage.
Geez, talk about misleading. It just assumes everybody is going to buy the digital version.
I have the joycon sync issue = = Supposed to be my first say taking it out to play.
Also that thing that stands the switch is absolutely terrible. It's soft plastic and only one side. It only can stand on hard flat surface and I do mean hard surface
Turns out it's something else. I even plugged the controller back onto the switch but it was not detected (left side). I plug the switch to laptop thinjing maybe the battery ran out and it works again with full battery. Weird.
the frame rate issue sounds bad... is it present in other games as well?
what's everyone most anticipated games? I will be group playing zelda with my brother and a friend, but I'm looking for justification to buy one of my own. I know Mario Kart will inevitably come and that's an easy one.

For me, Zelda, Wargroove, MarioKart, Splatoon2, and Mario: Odyssey from the games I know about. Maybe Yuka Lalee.

That's what it looks like. The official line from Nintendo is that they'll support both the Switch and the 3DS line, but they said the same thing when the DS came out about Gameboy.
Sun and Moon, along with a DBZ game my friends played for a bit, stretched what the 3DS could handle. They even had to put out the New3DS with slightly better specs to even run a very limited amount of games. The handheld is 6 years old and ripe for a turnover, as glorious as its run was.
if it truly is, nintendo as a company is way dumber then I thought. Look at their quarterlies the past few years, this company literally lives off the 3DS.
Mediocre console gaming doesn't have a big enough market to solely support nintendo in my opinion. 3ds games and the system is very affordable for kids/families and their main target audience and the library of games is massive enough that people would be veryyyy slow to switch if forced.
I don't see that ending well for them if they off the 3DS, lets be real the switch is not made to be portable at all from what i've seen. the advertising and the actual hardware are incompatible.
At the very minimum the Switch needs a price cut to be competitive with the 3DS. People aren't going to drop $300 with the intention of it being just a handheld like the 3DS.
$60 price point for Switch games is also relevant. 3DS found a niche because $100-$200 console + $40 games is a budget range far enough below other platforms while still being above F2P/indie mobile games. Asking people to drop 1.5x the money for its successor and games is a tough sell, especially when it's an audience that already doesn't really care that much about graphics.
And then the new Pokemon comes out as a Switch exclusive and everyone buys it anyway
Nintendo has moved strongly into the mobile market, I think they were unable to do Mobile + handheld + home console, so they merged the latter 2 into one. They will still turn a ridiculous profit, just look at the earnings of Pokemon go + FE heroes + super mario run...
