I played gens 1 and 4 when they were released and played 5-8 after Pokemon Go got me interested in the franchise again. I finally stopped because I didn't like Pokemon dens as the endgame and I found Home to be too expensive and annoying for what I do with it.

There are definitely a lot of Pokemon with unbalanced stats and you could further specialize them with EV training and nature. I'm not sure if those are still a thing but they did lead to most attackers specializing in either PA or SA. Another thing with the earlier games is that they had smaller move lists so some types had a much better selection of either PA or SA attacks. Later games added more moves, especially when they are designing new ones. For example, when fairy was added it was more SA based. They added a bunch of PA fairy moves when they added high PA fairy type attackers. That said, there are sure to still be some holes where some types lean toward either PA or SA.

The Nintendo Switch is rivaling the Atari 2600 with its extended lifespan. A key difference is that the Atari 2600 drastically fell in price over the years. It was $300 CDN in 1977. By 1984 it was a cool $50 in an era of sky high inflation.

I love that the Switch can live so long... have such ancient, old tech... and still dominate. The following super cool development would not be possible in an earlier era. Some great new additions to a 3 year old game...

. Retrosoft Studios has doubled the size of the story mode and added 3 new wrestlers in the past year. Retrosoft also improved the AI.

Nintendo Life gave the game a 6/10 citing a short story and small roster. I'd say they have to add 1.5 points to that score now. At this point Retromania Wrestling is the #2 wrestling game on the Switch.. with AEW Fight Forever at #1.

Retromania Wrestling is made by 1 programmer and 1 artist. Making games these days is eazy, peazy lemon squeezey.

That's partly because Sony has the capacity to produce older models even after a new one is out. And partly because they made the mistake trying to use the PS3 to push the Blu Ray format. Hopefully, Nintendo never screws up that badly.

The PS3 outsold the PS2 once it became readily available in 2007. Sony cranked up production of the PS3 shifting all their emphasis onto the new console. The PS3 didn't get discontinued super fast.

By contrast, the Atari 2600 continued outselling its successor, the Atari 5200, after its release. The Atari 5200 was discontinued after only 18 months. Finally 9 years after the 2600's release the 7800 came out and it flopped as well. And, the Atari 2600 kept on rolling.

In 1986 the NES sold about a million units in the USA. However, this is only a fraction of the 2600 install base. With its limited game selection the NES was not #1 until around 1988. The Atari 2600 had a longer run on top than the PS2.

The 2600's longer run wasn't some great feat of excellence by the 2600's designers and game makers. Atari kept fucking up. The people who designed the 2600 were long gone and the company was now controlled by a media corp. The Atari 2600's best games were being made by 3rd parties... and Atari was always threatening to sue the best game makers.

Anyhow,
I hope the next NIntendo console is backward compatible and the current Switch lives on for another 5+ years.

i found a guy who is as excited and surprised as I am by new content added to Retromania Wrestling several years after its initial release.


Lode Runner Legacy is on sale for $6 USD. I recommend it. A timeless classic made by 1 guy.

I just finished Pokemon Shining Pearl, and I was really impressed with all the post-game opportunities. The base game was good, but it was really nice to see just how much more was added after the Elite Four. The national dex, the underground, the sidequests, the battle tower, the upgraded gym leaders, etc. It made the game about twice as long for me, and most of the non-grindy goals were fun and worthwhile. I spent about 66 hours on the game total, and I'm not interested in spending another 30+ hours for the final 5% of post-game content. This'll fit solidly into my A-tier of Nintendo Switch games.

I heard really positive reviews for the gameplay of two Spongebob Squarepants games on Switch. While I don't care that much about the show SS, the games are apparently pretty solid platformers, and I'm a sucker for a good platforming game. I'll probably check them out next.

An official announcement, not a rumor:

Switch successor to be announced by March 31, 2025; Switch software-focused Nintendo Direct set for June
No mention of Switch successor during the June Direct.

Nintendo will announce the successor to Switch within this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a statement.

A Nintendo Direct will be held in June, but it will be focused on the Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, and will not feature any mention of the successor to Switch.

Here is the full statement from Furukawa:

“This is [Shuntaro] Furukawa, president of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.

“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

You guys that are more in tune with these things, what are the odds of backwards compatibility?

Is there any hope that the switch games im buying now will be playable on the new one when it releases? Or are they destined to be collecting dust somewhere?

Nintendo has been extremely consistent with having backwards compatibility for its handheld systems over the past few decades (Game Boy, Pocket, Color, Advance; all the Nintendo DS models), so I think there's a very good chance for backwards compatibility.

The Switch's library is already insanely large, and I feel like Nintendo wouldn't completely desert the success of the Switch just yet.

I think the odds of backwards compatibility are very good, but nothing is guaranteed. Also, keep in mind that you can always play your Switch games on your Switch, even in a world where a new Nintendo console doesn't work with them! I regularly play old N64 games on my N64, especially ones that aren't available on the Switch.

Yeah last point is very true but i was thinking about either giving the switch to my kid (rip switch) or us being able to play different games from our library (it annoys me a lot switching cartridges all the time to the moods of the kid )

I heard them wanting to make improvements to the Nintendo account system, which indicates digital games will be ported over. It doesn't seem like they are making huge changes to the console so physical is likely backwards compatible as well.

A few months ago, I had decided to buy FF7/8/9/10/12 all at the same time, for Switch. I had focused mostly on the two FF games that I had played way back in the day (FF7 and FF10), which were both also fantastic on the Switch. I then dedicated a few hours each to the 3 remaining Final Fantasy games that I hadn't played before - 8, 9, and 12 - but moved on from each of them a little more quickly than I probably should have.

All that to say that I'm playing Final Fantasy 12 now, and I'm really glad that I've played past the five-hour mark. The graphics and storyline are wonderful, the double-class trees (license board) are well thought out, and I'm enjoying the combat (which is always the most important criterion for me, when it comes to RPGs). While I still prefer true turn-based battles and full control of my entire party, I really think that the Gambit system is about as perfect as one can get to having the smartest possible AI controlling the other party members. There are apparently a significant number of improvements with the Switch / The Zodiac Age version, compared to the original FF12, such as free license board resets (so that you can tinker with as many class/skill combinations as you want), and an increase in move/battle speed (which I find to be completely necessary).

I had originally ranked Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age as a B+, but now I think it deserves to be moved up into my A tier. I'm trying to complete the game before Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door releases (on May 23rd), as I'm also really excited to play that game for the first time ever. Maybe this summer, I can give FF8 and FF9 an equally-fair shake and play each one for at least 20 hours (if not play through both games in their entirety).

Nintendo Life just dropped a video ranking all the mainline Pokemon games, which is an interesting coincidence because I've also been playing through some of the ones I'd never played before, in an attempt to create my own tier list.



I curiously tried looking up tier lists / rankings of mainline Pokemon games, and I don't think I've ever seen a franchise with less consistency between different people's perspectives than when it comes to different generations of Pokemon games. For each person who loves one of the generations, another person absolutely hates it. It's pretty interesting just how varied the opinions are.

Anyways, here's my subjective ranking so far, including brief lists of the things I noticed and valued. I decided to keep all the games within a generation "together", internally comparing remastered and original versions within the same generation, while also externally comparing generation vs. generation as a whole. (The one exception is Gen 8, since Legends: Arceus is considered Gen 8 along with Scarlet/Violet, even though L:A is a completely different Pokemon game from S/V.) I still have to play Gens 5, 6, and 7, and how much I like/dislike them might force me to move around other games on my list, to make room for the remaining ones.

I'm a mega fan of the FF series in general and 12 is probably the only one I ever dropped, to then pick it up later and absolutely love it. I'm glad you gave it another chance

I'd definitely give 8/9 more of a chance although I can understand why people have a hard time getting into them without wearing some nostalgia goggles. To me the music/setting of 9 is one of the best in the series.

7 is just straight up my favorite game of all time (and remake/rebirth have only enhanced that feeling). It was the catalyst that got me into FF and JRPGs for the first time as a young kid.

Nostalgia definitely influences people's view of the 90s FF games. I didn't play FF 7/8/9 until 5 years ago and I didn't like them gameplay wise. I just rushed through the story. I found the combat to be awful compared to modern games. I played FF 4/5/6 back in the day and I have better memories of those. I can only recommend FF 6, though. If you never played them back in the day, you'll have the same issues. I do think that FF 6's combat aged better than the early 3D games did.

Interesting move by Nintendo to get in on the Retro Gaming trend by repackaging a bunch of 40 year old games and calling it the "NES Championship Edition". It is ~$30 USD and comes out in July.


Generally speaking, Is Gen Z super into Retro Games? It looks to me like they are.
