I gotta say, that while almost every attack/offensive exercise seems worthwhile (red/yellow/blue/green, especially to exploit color-weaknesses), I'm finding the heart-recovery/defensive/healing exercises to be boring, taking too long, and generally not worth it (since I can just drink 1-2 shakes and instantly heal without wasting a combat turn).

Agreed. I usually just get a heal attack I can cheese and just take the breather during the exercise.
If we can skip all the instructions/repeat instructions on things that games pacing would be so much better. Some days I really want to exercise hard by running a bunch of levels, but repeat tutorials or random dialog just keep getting in the way.

The opportunity to skip instructions - especially on attack moves that you use every day - would be nice. Ironically, I've noticed that some of the gyms don't have repeat instructions, which can be annoying if I'm suddenly being asked to complete a side quest / extra objective there after having completed the mini-game only once, several days/weeks ago.
There are also some dialogues that I wish I could speed through. Thankfully, these are minor annoyances.

I'm not surprised! Hopefully it's as amazing as the last one.

I recommend Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan... I'd say its 8.5/10. The reviewer here gives it a 7/10. When it goes on sale for ~$6 its a great deal. https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/switch-eshop/sydney_hunter_and_the_curse_of_the_mayan
For people complaining about the price of games... the publisher of this game has a "multi-game package" that is $1300 USD.
These guys are manufacturing unlicensed carts for the NES and a bunch of other super old gaming systems. I thought making a game for the Switch might awaken the Nintendo legal team.

It'll be well worth it imo

I recommend checking out the free demo of Unicorn Overlord. It's a beautiful game, although the gameplay/combat is a little too slow and auto-battley for my taste. Demo was fun, but I don't think I'll buy the full game. It could definitely appeal to others though.

I've never played it, but I love Paper Mario 64 and Super Mario RPG. I've heard great things about TTYD. I think the Switch version of TTYD will receive very positive reviews, and I'm 99% sure I'll end up buying it.

Princess Peach: Showtime! is way more fun than I had expected. It's not very difficult and the controls are simple, but every level is a brand-new experience with new abilities and new themes. It's incredibly creative, and ideal for kids or adults who want a game that's more heavily focused on innovation and entertainment than frustratingly-hard gameplay. There are also enough hidden prizes in each level - and special bonus minigames - to create some legitimate challenges for completionists.

I just started playing Penny's Big Breakaway. I'd been looking forward to this game for a while now, as it's a 3D platformer. Overall, I'm pretty mixed on the experience. On the positive side, the atmosphere is cute, the music is fun, the moving and jumping and controls are crisp and responsive, and the abilities are pretty creative. On the negative side, the levels seem pretty linear, the camera often works against you (you have no camera control and are at the mercy of some awful angles that make it near-impossible to scout areas that you might like to explore), and there just really isn't that much to do in the levels. The negatives make the game a little more boring, restrictive, and frustrating than I would like. Losing interest fast.

I'm playing Pokemon Shining Pearl for the first time, and I'm very impressed. Although I've played newer Pokemon Switch games, the only earlier generations I played were Gen 1 (Red/Blue/Yellow) and Gen 2 (Gold/Silver/Crystal). I know there are several missed generations after Gen 2, but the quality of life improvements from Gens 1&2 to Shining Pearl are huge:
- Obvious improvements to graphics; - Getting to run / move quickly right away (no need to wait several towns for a bicycle); - All conscious Pokemon in the party gain experience, even if they don't battle; - Catching a Pokemon doesn't automatically warp them to your PC/Box (they can immediately be added to the party); - Swapping Pokemon in/out of the main line-up with all the remaining stored Pokemon anywhere (this is crazy); - The variety of balls and holdable items both seem better fleshed out; - Battling now labels/remembers the effectiveness of each attack after encountering the same Pokemon repeatedly; - Poison doesn't affect Pokemon outside of battle any more; - The early game features an extremely diverse group of Pokemon types, which is brand new to me. Normally, the first few hours of Pokemon feature a normal and normal/flying type (e.g., rattata and pidgey) and then a few bug/poison types (caterpie, weedle, etc.). Besides the type of your starting Pokemon, Gen 1 and Gen 2 have only a few types available until you play through a few towns. On the other hand, in Shining Pearl, I very quickly owned the following types: fire, water, grass, electric, normal, flying, fighting, bug, poison, rock, ground. It's nice to have a line-up that addresses strengths/weaknesses so quickly, although the trainers in each area don't exactly have a variety of Pokemon types to attack you with.
While I don't expect much in the way of storytelling from this game, I will say that so far, the premise for Pokemon Shining Pearl has been laughably bad. You and your friend (not rival?) each steal a Pokemon from a professor's briefcase, which astonished me. As soon as your friend starts using the Pokemon he stole, he immediately starts calling the Pokemon his own, as if he had been given or gifted the Pokemon. Yikes. Later on, the professor is like "okay, you can keep them". What?
Some of the dialogue is inconsistent too (for example: the game starts with your mom pointing out how it's a pity you don't have a Pokemon, and then if you go visit her right after stealing the professor's Pokemon, she doesn't even flinch or question the situation or really notice at all, until you complete a short quest objective and *then* she's suddenly interested in the fact that you somehow have a Pokemon).
The original Pokemon story (Gen 1, with Ash and Gary and Professor Oak) was much better and much more wholesome. For that reason, I've named my "friend" in Shining Pearl appropriately: https://imgur.com/a/PZWks1j
Aside from the writing, this game seems awesome. I still have a lot more to explore, and I'm looking forward to it. Fighting 2 Pokemon at once is weird, and I need to get used to the retcons of certain moves/types/Pokemon, but I'll get used to those changes. Fun game so far - fun to explore, and combat is fun too.

I had a similiar hiatus. I looooved Pokemon as a kid but I stopped playing around Gen 3.
The coolest thing that was introduced in Gen 3, was these "passive' abilities that each Pokemon has. That really added a lot of cool depth to Pokemon. As well as weather effects.
I know the REAL big thing that Gen IV added was the Physical/Special move split, which is apparently a big deal but I don't really engage with Pokemon mechanics to really get how big of a thing that was.

I've been tinkering with that info a bit in Shining Pearl... It certainly makes it easier to select moves that coincide with a Pokemon's stats. If I have a Pokemon with high Special Attack but really low (Physical) Attack, then it seems that I should be giving it SA moves and not PA moves. I didn't think it mattered much until I tried using Chansey/Blissey (decent SA but very, very low PA) and I went from doing zero damage with PA moves to actually being strong with SA moves.
Most of my Pokemon have pretty even PA and SA stats though, so it doesn't really matter unless the enemy has extremely lopsided Physical Defense vs. Special Defense. But this is Pokemon - not a particularly difficult game, strategically - so that level of planning doesn't really matter. Damaging moves are still king, status ailments are still decent if ignored for a while, and stat buffs/debuffs still seem like a waste of a turn. No need to waste a turn raising/lowering a stat when their Pokemon gets one-shotted or two-shotted every battle.
I'm sure it's different in the competitive Pokemon scene, but the standard game still has very basic and uncomplicated combat. If you know the Pokemon type chart (strengths/weaknesses), then you're invincible. Not a critique, just an observation. I'm fine with that.
I think my biggest critique of Shining Pearl is that it has this weird combination of forced linearity (nothing new for old-school Pokemon) but you have to also skip/backtrack large parts of areas/towns (moreso than in Gen 1 and Gen 2). Like, it forces you through some town with dancing performances, but you can't do the gym while you're there so you know you need to go back later. And then it forces you to town X where you can only complete 75% of town X. And then you need to go to town Y but a lot of it is closed off for now. I'm losing track of all the things I still need to do in each town that I've passed. I'm sure the game will remind me, eventually, but I never feel super productive in any specific location. If you're going to force mostly linear exploration, then let me actually feel accomplished in an area before moving me to the next one.
