Im not sure about the N64 but gamecube had stronger hardware than ps2 or dreamcast and only beaten by xbox. The gamecube was Nintendo trying to compete with specs after the waning sales of the N64, and in terms of sales the gamecube wasnt what they hoped for. So instead of an expensive arms race, they came up with the Wii and motion control, sacrificing raw power for cost control. And that is where Nintendo is now.

It's hard to compare the N64 to the PS1 in terms of the overall package, because the approaches were so vastly different (N64 with the more expensive cartridges with improved gameplay, zero loading time for a fluid experience, four-player capability from the start vs. PS1 with the cheaper discs that had better programming options and improved cinematics/graphics for movie scenes, and a much broader library). Specs, in particular, seem to favor N64 over PS1 though.
Here's a more thorough breakdown: https://www.thegamer.com/n64-vs-ps1-console-more-powerful-tech-specs/#:~:text=The Ps1's running power paled in comparison to,was three times as fast as the Ps1.
From the above link (with detailed explanations in the article):
"Cartridge Vs. CDs - PS1 Controller Ports - N64 Playing Games Across Multiple Discs - PS1 RAM And Memory -N64 Ease Of Programming - PS1 Graphics/Polygons Per Second - N64 Local Multiplayer - N64 Better Sound - PS1 Loading Times - N64 Controller Handling - Ps1 Graphic Realism - PS1 Bigger Worlds And Better Physics - N64 Overall Power - N64
Again, the N64 wins here. The Ps1's running power paled in comparison to the N64–at least on paper. The Ps1 ran at 33.8Mhz MIPS R3000a CPU, while the N64 ran at NEC VR4300 CPU (MIPS R4300i based) and clocked in at 93.75Mhz. The N64 was three times as fast as the Ps1.
However, while the N64 had more juice, the Ps1 did have more to work with since the CD format presented opportunities for higher sound quality, realistic graphics, and smooth gameplay. For Sony's first outing, they held their own against a well-known behemoth. So, maybe we will just call this one a tie."
This other article also breaks down different traits and comes up with the same result: basically a tie overall, but N64 for specs. https://www.thegamer.com/ps1-n64-better-retro-console-nintendo-sony/#:~:text=While both consoles used a 16-bit sound system, second while the N64 only processed around 100,000.
In terms of specs alone, the second article heavily favors the N64, writing:
"This is a rather easy comparison to make. Keep in mind: this was cutting edge technology in 1994 and 1996, when the PS1 and N64 were released respectively. While both consoles used a 16-bit sound system and displayed 16.7 colors, the N64 had a 64-bit RISC CPU to PS1's 32-bit RISC and 4 MiB of RAM to PS1's 2 MB.
The only area PlayStation comes out on top in is polygons. The PS1 processed 360,000 polygons per second while the N64 only processed around 100,000."
Edit: Apparently, these two articles contradict each other in terms of polygons per second. The first article writes: "The PS1's system could process 180,000 polygons, while the N64 processed one million. This measurement is one that is not as relevant as it was back then since graphics have graduated beyond polygons. However, it does shed some light on how graphics were perceived back in the 1990s."
They both agree, however, for a variety of reasons that N64 wins overall in the specs department.

Have to admit I am enjoying Skywayd Sword without the motion controls.
It's still a little janky (perhaps the coding or mechanic just is) but I am generally able to be confident about doing what I want... Usually about when I want. That's the main catch is the little lag between my input and Link following through.
Hopefully a little more time will smooth that out, but I can see so many little choices in this game that explain the reputation it has.

That's good to hear I didn't play the original SS but I bought the new SS (haven't played yet), but I'm also not a huge fan of being forced to use motion controls that don't sync well, and it sounds like they made a lot of improvements in the Switch version.

Pokemon Unite is actually super fun lol. Doesnt matter if ur from the moba genre or not. Its a quick lane phase, into teamfight+push+rat style. Its actually so simple yet fun and action packed. The aesthetic and controls are not bad too.

And it's... Free!? I just downloaded it on Switch (haven't played it yet). Is it free to play + pay to win? Do microtransactions give you an unfair advantage or something?

afaik the only thing microtransactions do is give u cosmetics and lets you unlock more pokemon faster.
i havent spent a penny yet. i dont feel the need to. just been grinding and its been a blast!

That's good to know It's in my backlog of Switch games now lol

It's somewhat P2W sadly. Each pokemon can equip 3 items, and each item can go from lvl 1 to lvl 30. Upgrading items is paid for with tickets, an F2P player would have to play over 300 days to get 3 items to lvl 30 (math done by some Reddit guy), while a paying player can just purchase that day 1 if he so desires. I've read that getting items to lvl 20 as an f2p is manageable, then the cost ramps up. Unfortunately that still means your pokemon has straight-up inferior crit/attack stats than the opponent, which is a bit shit in a MOBA.
All of that said it's definitely worth checking out the game still, I'm having a blast. Still below lvl 9 so upgrading items isn't possible yet, maybe things will suddenly get really ugly when i get there Doubt it though, fun game to play when you have some times, I like that each game is just 10 minutes that's great for a MOBA on switch imo.

Are your allies/opponents at similar item levels to you? It would be sad if you pretty much automatically lost matches simply because the items your opponents used just had objectively better stats than you.
|
Not sure, idk if it's even possible to check their items. I'm going to assume it's just standard MMR matchmaking though, doubt they also look at item levels.

Gotcha. Either way, it sounds pretty fun, especially if the matches are relatively short for a MOBA

Im level 11 now. Held items are pretty broken if you just pay to boost them, increases flat damage, crit damage and hp regen. But thats A LOT of money lol. I feel like even if people max it out then theyll just transcend non-p2w ranks quickly, so I dont mind it.

I’m currently grinding in Expert rank and I’m impressed how good players are. People are using ejector to disjoint lock-on abilities. I thought this was the shit only happening in Dota.
Only a matter of time before people realize how strong Gengar Hex is. U could just mash it in the face of 1v3 and kill someone and still make it out.
My acct is still f2p though I’m considering getting the season battle pass. Just doesn’t make sense not to with the amount of playing I’ve been doing.

I had the misfortune of meeting a P2W Gengar today, or at least I have to assume he was P2W going by the massive damage he put out. Getting 2-shot and having the idea that there is nothing you can do to stop it feels bad.
My enthusiasm for the game has already lowered considerably. Not being able to communicate with your team isn't great. Solo queueing in MOBAs is always a shitty experience but at least if you can type there is some way around that. Now you just sit there frustrated at a teammate without any way of letting him know
e: and I know there's meant to be voice com but I haven't heard anyone talk in any of my games, I'm not sure how I can talk myself, the setting for allowing comms is on by default but I don't think it's working?

Gengar Hex haha: https://dotesports.com/pokemon/news/what-is-the-current-pokemon-unite-meta
I'm enjoying the game so far, although it's obviously a slow grind as someone who's not paying to boost the account. I think the UI outside of games / currencies and what-does-what could have been better organized/explained, as I'm finding simple navigation/understanding of the tabs/hub to be difficult.

What skill do you pick before Hex? I like how low the cooldown is for Shadow Ball (+ it decreases speed and special defense for the opponents), but apparently Hex can do more damage if the opponent is already affected by a status condition so I assume Sludge Bomb's poison can complement Hex? I don't know if Shadow Ball can complement Hex too, but do you have a strong preference either way?
|
Sludge + Hex is the only way for Gengar. Sludge literally resets your Hex CD to one second. Never tried shadowball, I actually havent tested if it works with Hex
I use Wise Glasses, Shell Bell and Sp. Atk Specs as held items. Ejector as my battle item.

Same here I'm not sure if the game will keep my interest, but it's decently fun so far.

It’s a shame there’s a time wall behind earning gold and energy tanks. Kinda killed my drive to grind now. Game is quite fun for what it is. Shattered any expectations I had, I’ll give it that.
