Thanks very much, that's one variable i don't need to consider now haha.

Do note that if you plan on getting a stick eventually, you will have to relearn everything
|
I would only argue that learning from scratch on a stick might be slightly easier, simply because the 6 button nature of SF gets weird with only 4 face buttons on a normal controller. That being said, as long as you learn how to play correctly (i.e. utilize all buttons properly in combos and neutral without accidentally relying too heavily on your face buttons and neglecting the shoulder buttons due to unintuitive, etc) there is no real skill ceiling gap between the two in the long run. Especially in 5 where plinking is irrelevant.

Not EVERYTHING but it does add a bit of extra time. I went from playing keyboard to arcade stick in 2-4 weeks of light playing and it felt great. I would try stick before you ever want to buy it if you can. It isn't for everyone.
|
Well in my case I had to relearn basic movement as I was randomly jumping, or neutral jumping when I meant to forward jump, or unable to dash properly for around 2 weeks when I first switched. I suppose, you still keep your combo timings down pat, but I found my footsie game gimped so hard with not being able to move properly when I first switched.

hi guys want some laura tech
anything into ex fireball -> s.mk or c.mp xx vskill dash forward -> s.mp
the s.mk or c.mp will air reset them, you can side switch or not depending on which of those two buttons you use
the s.mp hits meaty and allows a link to c.mp without a counterhit, as well as being an obnoxious +4 to +7 on block. you can grab their shit once they're conditioned to block, or create new frame trap strings that were too loose to beat jab before, or loop into the same fireball mixup for another bar lol. vskill dash cancelling the meaty s.mp is somewhere around +0 to +3 (wtf)
I'm not playing Laura but I hope someone finds it useful. It's a really strong thing to have.

I got a stick and SF4AE couple of weeks before USF4 came out, I just wanted to play on the same thing the pros used and it's been good to me ever since even though it took a long time to dash to the left effectively. I agree with others who say it's up to preference but I honestly feel that if you have the money then it's worth it as it feels more intuitive to play SF with them than on a pad considering the input layouts.
On the topic of Bison, I really liked playing as him yesterday it was probably the quickest I picked up any character so now I've done 9 and have 7 left to learn.
Barring any surprises with the last 7 it's between Dhalsim, Bison on who I main and R. Mika will be my side character. I'm leaning towards Dhalsim, but playing Bison would be nice against my rival who plays Ryu, really like his v-skill.

When I hear the question about using an arcade stick it always makes me feel really old haha. How many of you like myself use a stick because its what you grew up with? I've even been using a stick at home since around 2002 with the old american style MAS stick. looking back I'm so used to the square gate now, I don't know I used the circle kind.

Only at the arcades man, never had one at home before a couple years ago. Unless you count old Sidewinders or similar joysticks, mechwarrior and commanche with those things were the best! Fighting games at home I always used either keyboard when I was super little, like X-Men children of the atom stuff or gamepads after SNES SF2. Never really mattered since before 2014 I just button mashed these games without a second though and a stick wouldn't have done a difference. (:

Speaking of controllers, I feel like different people will take to the various controllers differently. Crossing the basic execution threshold might be different depending on how the controller feels on your hands. Personally, Nintendo and Sony d-pads work for me but the Xbox one gives me a huge amount of trouble. I keep whiffing on anything more complicated than a QC motion and I have trouble on charge moves sometimes. I'm pretty sure I've had more playtime with an Xbox controller over a PS controller, especially with fighting games, so it's not an unfamiliarity thing either.

Yeah I was trying to convey that I use an arcade stick because I got to grow up in the 90's, in actual arcades. So it was always more comfortable to me over a pad. The second I saw you could get a high quality stick for home I never looked back hah. If you grew up only playing on a pad though I would just stick to what you like.
My first stick was exactly this one
+ Show Spoiler +
I still have it but it only connects to Ps2 and Dreamcast hah.
Edit@andre: I think that shows a great point that there is never going to be one right answer to "should I get a stick?" or "what pad should I use?". Many variables impact that choice.

We both did, it's just arcades was sadly less common over here. I played on pad my whole life, but I still like the arcade stick I got a couple years ago better for fighting games. The learning curve was steep but it was worth it.

So Bison has now eclipsed Chun Li for #1 on eventubs' tier list. Obviously it's too early to get an "accurate" tier list but it does show us that the salt is real with this character lol.
He's no longer the low risk low reward character he was in SF4, now he's low risk high reward. That v-trigger combo where you get a hit confirm into flames into ex stomp hurts so much. And ex scissor kicks is plus on block?...why??? Yun ex lunge 2.0?
I haven't played very many Bisons online yet but the ones who have patience and play solid fundamentals have totally wrecked me. Guess I know which matchup I need to practice the most.

As a Bison main I can't really agree with that, on the basis that good Chuns absolutely wreck me. The mirror match is way easier.

I've been having the most fun with Laura so far in casuals but I'm still trying to get a handle on most of the cast before I commit to anything lol

event hubs tier list is pretty bleh in all games.
I honestly don't think we can make or should worry about a ranking list yet. People are still (even in high ranks) getting away with unsafe or goofy shenanigans that will be non-existent a month or so from now. While I can't rank characters individually, it does seem there are some tiers developing , probably something like...
S-Tier Chun Bison Dhalsim A-Tier Ryu Ken Birdie Karin Rashid Nash Necalli Vega Cammy B-Tier Laura Mika Zangief
I don't know where to put FANG whatsoever. Again, it's fun to make these lists but I wouldn't put much faith in anything like this yet. Match-ups will always be something to consider but I think everyone in SFV is good, there are no obvious shitters and it comes down to individual player skill.
|
Yeah a "proper" tier list hasn't really formulated yet, but it's already easy to spot a bad one. The Eventhubs one is definitely the latter... Ryu, Dhalsim, Cammy and Necalli all seem too low.
|
Yeah I haven't felt anything as being OP in this game, just some good tools but nothing broken. Which means player skill should ultimately persevere.
Speaking of Laura resets after ex fireball, is there any other button or setup that can get you to cross under besides s.mk vskill fwd? In the corner I found you can do s.lp vskill fwd for fake crossup or s.lp vskill fwd (hold fwd) for actual crossup...very ambiguous. But midscreen if I see s.mk I know it'll be crossup, any other button is fake crossup.

I played Fang for a day and he felt ass. But then I played him for another couple of days and he felt ass. Granted I've only really played Chun-Li and Ryu other than Fang but it's quite a bit of work with him. We'll see what kind of mix-up's people come up with though.
