The real reason why people are ranting is because Niantic got rid of third-party websites/apps that basically allowed cheating, go figure. There is a massive difference between the 3-step tracking system and using apps that show you the actual location. The tracking will be back soon enough, they just have to re-do the entire thing server-side to ensure sites like Pokevision can't happen anymore. People are so fickle nowadays

But currently having no way of knowing where anything is, within a far too large radius to track within the despawn timer is stupid....

Which is exactly why they changed the "Nearby" radius from 100m to 70m. As soon as a pokemon pops up on your nearby list, it's 70 meters away (and probably not in the direction you just came from, unless it just spawned) Not my definition of "far too large radius" but opinions vary.

That is helpful. But is still a bit large to go in blind...

I read that this change just means pokemons that spawned disappear if you go 70m away from them before catching them. The whole radar vs. third-party sites is a ridiculous tango. If they're against ToS or whatever, fine, taking it down is legit. But saying that it's against the spirit of the game (which was, I believe, to be a cooperative ARPG experience?) is a real "have fun the way I programmed it to have fun!" move. Which I feel easily alienates swaths of the community. Having no radar makes having the pokemon appear on its screen a taunting pipe dream at best (oh look, there's an ivysaur nearby, let's play run around like an idiot for twenty minutes while it despawns at the last second). The community is finicky because when Go was released, it was very barebones; just 'mon-catching and a different gym system, no trading, no player battles in the more conventional sense, no contests (if you're into those parts of the game). Anything else that it offered really helped give width to that system; deriving bits of it or even inconveniencing parts of it makes it seem all the more shallow.

Tracking became basically impossible. The footstep removal is a signal that there will never be a way to track pokemon in game. Of course, we have zero idea what Niantic is doing because they never tell nobody nothing. I think I am noticing that higher CP pokemon are jumping and attacking balls more frequently. Not an unwelcome change as adding some challenge to catching is OK. Would be GREAT if didn't have to rely on unofficial patch notes to know what's happened

People are so fickle nowadays Well, to be honest, the game is just trash. Cheats like Pokevision were the only thing that made it bearable in the first place since the entire system is a dull grind with nothing to engage you. Now that you basically have to wander around blindfolded to find any pokemon, what makes the game any good? All of the hype around the game was a combination of nostalgia and the new paradigm of wandering around and being able to see pokemon superimposed on the real world. Once the "new shiny" aspect faded, everyone was able to see the game for what it was; a hollow, shallow game with little to it.

Deleting pokevision without fixing the bug that makes pokevision essential is the biggest fuck-you I can imagine. Niantic has one more chance, I think. If they listen to the backlash and rethink their approach, they can recover. It needs a lot more content and some changes to their fundamental design, but the clay is there. If they stuff it up again they go down in history as the team that murdered the golden goose.

pokevision going down is probably much better for the game, and i used it a lot.

As I said, if you enjoy sitting at pokestops all day that's great for you. Others actually wanted to interact with other players and Niantic is completely ruining this by enabling cheaters to do whatever they want and doing nothing about helping legit players. But I'm just a salty little pissant, what do I know.
