Off topic, I watched the video the tweet linked to, and I can't believe SE are still pushing the FF card game. I'm all for cool spinoffs and stuff, but that card game looked like the laziest cash grab I've ever seen.
They can't even make new art and are still relying on super old renders and concept art? Ugh.

I don't think that's the fan consensus. But regardless apparently SE probably thinks so. I think the grand total of all the ports/re-releases and remakes of FF4 exceeds 20+.
I mean, they even went an episodic sequel for FF4, after years, which was actually quite good.
Also, FF4 is like the game that put FF where it is now, sure 6 kinda give it a more wide appeal and 7 made the jump to 3D, but imo without 4 we would not have FF as it is today

I for sure acknowledge FF4 had a tremendous influence on the series, in regards to character and storytelling, as well as iconic art and features. However, I don't think it holds up to my favorite 2D FF games, FF5 and FF6. FF5 perfected the classic gameplay, and I think FF6's characters and story are just by far the best in the mainline series.

SNES is like Skyrim for SNES on the pile of bugs it has and also has Woosley idiocy + technical constraints for name sizes, GBA fixes the translation and some glitches while introducing some new ones while PC has everything fixed but the looks are awful with those MS Paint sprites.
The only way to play FF6 nowadays is by doing a lot of patches on the GBA version.

I've always found bugs and glitches part of the charm of these older games. At least the ones that shipped in functional states.
Probably because they were around for over a decade before anything got "fixed", so anyone playing through those games repeatedly would learn to use them, and it feels so bizarre not having tricks like Vanish/X-Zone.

Also the challenge in FF6 when i played it was garbage. Remakes should fix that issue, make it more tactical and shit. BUT DOUBT THEY CAN DO THAT THOUGH
It's pretty overblown to say that the snes version is unplayable. The last time I played it was in Japanese, and the experience isn't really that different.
Most resources involved with a remake go into visuals and audio which don't really need to be touched. The game is easy, but games are easy now too, so I don't really know if a remake would be that much better. As for games bases on nostalgia, I prefer the mechanics to be how I remember them when I first played them anyways.
I find my SNES and PSX copies of FF VI to be quiet alright. But then again I also enjoy FF VII on my psx. If remakes are a nice way for them to make some easy cash to fund other projects then I'm all for it. It's not like anyone is forcing me to buy them. There are also plenty of people who simply missed out on some of these great games, or weren't around back then to play them. Sure they could pick up a cheap snes/psx and get a original copy, but most people tend to only play on the current gen systems so it's a great way to introduce them to older games. Also when you have played through a game countless times, it can be nice to do so again with a fresh coat of paint (as long as it doesn't look like those ff vi steam sprites...).

But to get back on topic, I'm not sure how they're going to spin this if they're going to make it a ps5 game. Everyone was already on edge with the whole episodic stuff.
it's not about the fact it's remakes, for whatever reason in terms of business, gaming companies are headed towards that route. if you think SE is the only company doing it, you need to look at western companies as well. it's a large thing going on right now and i don't know if it's due to the death of creativity, but we haven't really had great new stories being told in new games as of late.
every time SE makes a new announcement about their big title, i feel so hesitant and just chuck it off. they are under staffed, even admittedly so, and you have the main character designer who draws these fantastic memorable characters (Tetsuya no mura) swapped off projects to take on new ones. i dont' want to put pressure on them but i think it's square enix doing it to themselves as they overestimate their ambition with their actual workload. they have their hands in too many different projects, along with being a publisher...its almost like they can't focus on their main line, and when it does come out its massive delays or it's unfinished.
