Um, am i getting this right, exclusive units in a boardgame? That's probably the most retarded way to go about this.
|
Yes, it's pretty standard on most miniature based board games on kickstarter, and there are lots of people who don't like the practice. Other people like that they are getting something extra that no one else will get by pledging early, and companies who do it seem to feel that it encourages pledges now instead of waiting until retail. The game has kind of a hero quest type feel to it, but they are trying to make it balanced strategically for both the overlord and the hero players.

I already pleged! It looks epic and conan is awesome!

I too am excited by this kickstarter, but I don't think I can make the investment at this time sadly.... What really has me enthused is the user created content that's sure to appear on BGG. Those guys quadrupled the amount of time my group spent playing Ravenloft.

Yeah, the base pledge isn't cheap, but all the stretch goals makes it a great value relative to other games of a similar type. And I expect quite a few more stretch goals to be unlocked by the end. They have some great sculptors on the staff, though I'm slightly disappointed that they went with simpler poses on some of the miniatures in order to make everything not require any assembly. They have an all star team of French sculptors in Thomas David, Stephane Simon, Jaques-Alexandre Gillois, Stephane Nguyen, Yannick Hennebo, Arnaud Boudoiron, Gregory Clavillier, Elfried Perochon, Rafal Zelazo, and Gael Goumon. Many worked for Rackham Miniatures before they switched to pre-painted plastic figures.

I wonder if it'll be as good as Age of Conan? Looks kinda meh. The minis are decent but all the other components are sub-par. Wouldn't pledge.
|
I don't really think they are comparable games except for sharing the Conan theme. This one is more of a skirmish scenario tactical battle, I haven't played Age of Conan, but from what I have read it is more empire building and you don't directly control Conan, more he is a force you can try to influence to help you.
The miniatures are a huge part of the components. Everything else looks pretty standard to me. Dice, cards, counters, game board. Nothing spectacular, but what do you find to be sub par? You really have to check out the close up pictures. The picture of everything you get is a nice over view, but too zoomed out to really appreciate the details.

Kickstarter is entering the last 2 days now. Lots more stretch goals unlocked. And some more examples of painted miniatures: + Show Spoiler +

Last day and Conan has pushed past $3 million, unlocking a collector box that will hold all the figures. Looks like it will be the highest funded board game on kickstarter ever.

Well I went and backed it at the last minute, cause holy shit the king pledge + stretch goals is SO MUCH STUFF. Also, I love board games AND miniature games, so I can't see this being anything other than a massive win. Hurt my finances quite a bit, but nothing I cant recoup from I am sure. So excited!
*I actually considered this when it was announced, but it really was all those stretch goals that pushed me over the line in the end. So.Much.Stuff. And the stuff is awesome, those sculpts look really damn cool.

I got my Copy of the king pledge last week. Here are a few of the models with zenithal highlighted primer paint job on them:
