I notice some people named their commander as prophet and some people their scout. I've always done the former, but what are the motivations for each choice? Curious newbie here, not trying to get an eye onto people's plans.

Yea I noticed that too. Does he still spread dominion when he is sneaking round?

Newbie here too, but I believe in dominions 3 the preferred tactic was to prophet your scout and overtax your capital to get some more early income, using your starting commander and army to patrol for one turn to compensate for the unrest. Since overtaxing is gone in dominions 4, there's no real reason to prophet your scout instead of your commander anymore.

Maybe I'm missing something.

I think so, yes. I guess that could be an advantage as well.

Propheting whomever was always a preference. A prophet scout does indeed spread dominion but most people still chose to prophet commanders as he can sermon of courage spam and also spreads your dominion to territories you're (hopefully) conquering. Overtaxing/patrol is popular if you didn't want to prophet first turn or chose to prophet scout. It was vastly more popular in blitz as the amount of pop/gold you lost from the patrol was not insignificant over the course of a longer game.

Certain nations do benefit from certain things being prophets over starting commanders. For example, nations with demon recruits (Lanka/Yomi/LA Ulm)/undeads can get a reanimator. Similarly some think Jomon should wait for a good master shugenja to prophetize to take advantage of the signs. Obviously you'll note I didn't bother with this as I find the earlier sermon of courage + having a prophet who can lead more troops is more important.

Hmm, interesting changes to pretenders coming to the game:

My guess is that the cost changes probably address the new pretenders. Is halving the prison time of disciples to encourage people going higher in magic paths?

Also, RIP Virtue for Caelum. My first pretender ever in dom 3. Guess it wasn't Zoroastrian enough. :'(

I think halving the prison time as actually a nerf: in all cases the disciple stays asleep longer, and you can't get an awake SC expander on the disciples from turn 1 any more with a dormant pretender.

I'd still like to try a disciples game sometime on TL -- will these changes eliminate some of the degenerate strategies in them, I wonder?
