The main principle of high level play in fighitng game is that you win the game at neutral, and combos are your reward for winning at neutral. Your job is to open your opponent up while not getting hit. If you're getting comboed, that means you messed up and got hit. That's why spacing, footsies, and movement are the most critical skills in games like this. Right but it means that 80% of spectating is watching unavoidable combos instead of the things that take actual skill, ie spacing, footsies, and movement. Combos take plenty of execution. Try doing Zero loops... tiger kneeing consistently is not easy.

They're all pretty much avoidable, is what he's saying, lol. Movement is extremely important and there is tech that's been developed just to optimize it for many characters. There's still a high level of prediction and mindgaming, and dropping a combo is pretty costly as well.

If you're just a robot with your input timings you're gonna drop combos.

Right but it means that 80% of spectating is watching unavoidable combos instead of the things that take actual skill, ie spacing, footsies, and movement. A combo in theory is unavoidable if you don't drop it. Second, its as if you're making it seem like those long combos take little to no skill. Personally, I'm not a fan of combo-breakers. You get hit, you deserve to suffer every bit of it. Again, agreed, punishes should be huge. But the end result is just damage - if you replaced these ridiculous 30 second combos with 2 second ones that did the same amount of damage, there'd be no difference in gameplay. If I wanted to watch rehearsed mechanical precision I wouldn't be watching competitive gaming. I honestly just don't like these long periods of non-interactivity between the two players.
