What do you people normally do when you start up a new game? At first I just kind of did whatever but now I am trying to plan out where to expand, who to ally, and what idea build I am going to use.

Switch Army/Navy Maintenance down to get more money. Unless the nation in question is at war or I want to start an instant war. Other than that just plan your goals beforehand.

At that point it's probably easier to just dissolve the HRE. Only the Emperor can grant electorates, so if you are not in good standings with him (and not a member of the HRE), you won't get it. Besides, a HRE with less than 10 members is not worth the effort to get into.

I tried to unite the HRE recently, and fell a bit short (France allied the Ottomans and I didn't realize it and I declared war on the Ottomans... ooops). So I started a new run hoping my knowledge from the first run would help, and I got a wee bit lucky:

I got a personal union with Hungary about 10-15 years in because their leader died and the Burgundy inheritance fired about 25-30 years in- long enough France was slowed down pretty substantially, and Burgundy was actually making inroads into the HRE at their Netherland holdings. Managed to successfully integrate Hungary after about 60 years, right in time for the Protestants.

I also figured out a cute way to game the truce system- Denmark keeps declaring on northern HRE states, and France is allied with them, so I just have to join the war, peace out (after paying Denmark a crap ton of gold... and breaking a vassal usually, but hey, I can go get a new one), and then I get 15 years to do whatever the hell I want.

I wasn't this big until like 1700 last run. I've only got one reform pushed through though (about halfway to the second one). I think gaining imperial authority by expanding the empire's borders will be fairly easy though.

I can hardly believe how lucky I was though. First time I tested Austria, I didn't get the Burgundian inheritance or a personal union with Hungary, and I missed the boat to force the personal unions on Hungary and Bohemia.

Been game-planning a Vijayanagar WC. Will be my first 1.7 game (after having taken a break since 1.6 release). With the latest discovered exploits innovations I strongly believe that they are very strongly positioned for WC, possibly the best positioned of any nation. The only competition I can see is a bugged fast-unification Japan assuming the subject-annex-subject bug hasn't been fixed.

Will be hopefully utilizing Jake's army tradition + protectorate exploit, then drastawi's holy war + release vassal everything strat. In practice this means no coalitions, and very little over-extension problems. The idea is to truce-break, say, France repeatedly, until you can full annex them, then release them as a vassal. You'll have to eat 400% overextension at -2 stab for a bit, but accept demands is pretty nice button.

One of the big issues I'm seeing is the American natives. By the point I am invading them I will be at -100 diplo power with no hope of escaping (in all likelihood I'll have something like 20+ vassals at that point). Without Holy War CB I don't believe I'll be able to annex them for free though. Colonial conquest CB doesn't offer free full annex either. Conquest is unreliable as CN formation will preclude me from being able to forge claim on everything.

Are there any other good CBs I'm missing? (needs to have zero dip cost for full annex)

1.7.3 - Hotfix Released - Checksum 7d7e

- Support independence minimum opinion should now be -25. (no -1000 AI score)
- Fixed CTD where changing trade in CountryTradeView would assume that the merchant is currently trading.
- CTD when issuing the help command in console.
- National focus now saved.
- Increased precision in fabricate claim discovery, should now be better.
- You will no longer annex Japan when you try to annex a vassal to Japan
- Having national focus unchangeable, the tooltip will now tell you the reason for it.
- Religious unity values will not be super low when legitimacy is below 100.
- Increased precision in fabricate claim discovery, should now be better.
- Loot & Income from Peace is no longer considered as monthly income for income calculations.
- To become unexiled a unit must be fully loaded onto ships.
- Colonies no longer affect religious unity.
- You now no longer get both opinion bonus & penalty when winning elections in an Elective Monarchy.
- Truce now scales per month, not just per year.
- Legitimacy is now set to 90 if a foreign ruler goes on the throne of an Elective Monarchy.
- In an Elective Monarchy, you now get the same dynasty on your noble if current ruler is local.
- Valid opposing rivalries should no longer cancel for the stronger nation at a monthly tick.

Does anyone know if I should be able to load up units by clicking them unto the water tile from one of my provinces that I was taking back? It was attacked by rebels and I couldn't seem to be able to put the extra troops back unto the ship until I broke the siege.

National focus is currently bugged, it wipes if you reload a save and you are unable to set a new one.

I managed to unite the HRE as Austria, given the start I mentioned earlier.

I've got a personal union with Great Britain and I can integrate them fully in about 20 years.

Prussia formed and I was a bit worried that they'd be my doom because they were Protestant very early. I managed to get Saxony to convert back to Catholicism successfully, and then... my emperor died in his early 30's when I was doing some super aggressive stuff to try to deal with the Protestant Reformation. Saxony ended up taking over the emperor title. Fortunately it was short lived, and it was actually a remarkably peaceful time where I got my economy and military in good order. They also continued my reconversion of Brandenburg and Prussia that I had started, so when I regained the throne they were both largely Catholic. So I got to ally Prussia and they were my bulldog for a few hundred years. Saxony tried to defend a part of the empire and they were expecting me to join them as an ally, but I stabbed them in the back, and they got reduced to a single province. So I declared war on them, took their capital, and reclaimed the throne.

Ended up getting a personal union with Great Britain too- because Russia was given one, and I got a war to stop it and take it for myself. I had to fight Great Britain, Prussia, and Russia- the Prussian officers coupled with the masses of Russian troops were a huge headache, along with the British landing troops landing in the Netherlands and Italy. I had to get 60% war score, and against Russia that was a slog fest that took 20 years. I booted Prussia out of the war pretty early, thankfully, or I probably would have lost. I completely wiped out all of Russia's manpower several times, but they just kept coming- only started to turn because they got like 16% inflation and started to run out of money for their troops.

I finished my 2nd ironman game today with Poland start. I feel like it was a pretty good run. Every game my goal is to kill Russia, France, and the Ottomans, so in that respect I feel like I did fairly decently, though the core French lands remain unfortunately barely touched.

Yes, France and the Ottomans are still the easiest countries for beginners. With castile or Portugal being good if you want to colonize.
