So I can't exactly expand too much without having to face huge penalties in combat. Any suggestions for quick westernization? I am only on tech group 2 in all areas, have a decent monarch, and am currently sitting on loads of dosh. Should I just wait the 50 odd years to get exploration tech group, move to the other coast near portugal/castile colony and westernize from that?
How do the Nomad tech groups play out? I've never really bothered to play one yet and was thinking about starting a game with one. Which one would be a good one to learn about them on? The tims?
Monarch point penalties are to be removed in 1.7 (released with Res Publica DLC). M&T (and VeF, I think) remove it already.

mmm guys, what are MP penalties? i thought you only get increased tech cost for different tech groups? i really hate how with muslims i cant have my trading companies, and i found colonisation to be quite dissapointing when i focused my norway game around it...

My current Korea Ironman. I think World Conquest is already too late now. Russia formed crazy early like 1500 and stopped my advance westwards. On the bright side im nearly done with Ming. Their provinces are really expensive since the recent patches :/.

In Europe you get 3 base MP per month in each category. Below Muslim level you don't. They're going to change that and set everyone to 3. I don't think they're going to change starting tech level though.
I like Halby's summary of a colonization strategy at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXCd7eWdygA, but if you don't enjoy it I don't think there's a way to make it more fun. It's a massive investment in the early game that takes a lot of waiting at 5x before you see a payoff.

Do you play any mods? I'm downloading Veritas et Fortitudo now. Is it worth it?

It is good, but feels unpolished (very snowbally, OP national ideas). And is constantly changing. But the performance is very, very good, the team is very responsive and listens to feedback. I like their in-game research system and policies, map no so much.
At least that is my biased opinion (I am a dev of M&T, we have a friendly rivalry ).
VeF & M&T are the 2 biggest total overhaul mods, I reccomend to try them both out. There are thousands of other small and big mods of varying quality.
If you have any M&T-related questions, ask them, I will try to answer here.

With M&T you mean "MEIOU and Taxes"? I'll definitely try it out!

Hey, I just gave in and bought EU4 I was a big time fan of EU2 AGCEEP and also EU3 Magna Mundi. My question is, is there any major mod that aims to balance expansion and also maybe add some extra historical flavour like these mods in the prequels? What I've read so far neither VeF or D&T does what I'm looking for, by that I mean kicking any (human and AI) country's ass HARD if they try to create a blob.
So I guess I'm basically searching for a somewhat hardcore, historically plausible overhaul.

I think the current EU4 makes it too hard to expand compared to how it should be. I don't see how it is historically plausible to not be able to take more than 2 provinces after crushing a grand alliance. 200 years earlier the Mongols conquered an entire continent in a few decades. The end period of EU4 has Napoleons era. In WW2 entire countries are swallowed up within a week.

M&T tries to limit blobbing by internal factors rather than external ones. We have a Provincial Administration system that limits your income/manpower based on your infrastructure and tech, scaling with distance to capital. It's not perfect or exhaustive, but it's a start. You can always increase the negative modifiers it gives if you want a challenge.
We also have DeiGratia (which you probably know from MM) which makes the religious aspect something more than conquer&convert.
In VeF it is even easier to blob than in vanilla IMO.

1.7 patch notes: 100% warscore = 15 year truce timers
hahahahahahahahah

What do they mean with "Paid Features"?
Also, 15 years of truce is ridiculous.
- IA no longer gained when princes convert to the Emperor's religion. - IA is once again lost when princes convert away from the Emperor's religion. Sucks as well.
- Culture Conversion is now twice as long as default, but culture conversion cost modifiers can reduce it. - Overextension over 100% now increases revoltsize by multiplying with OE. Not like conversion took already 3-4 years... Seems like rebel problems will become even more fun.

Paid features are exclusive to the new expansion while free features are included in the patch.
I am very, very dubious about the 15 years of truce too. It just seems like it'll make the game too boring.

i didn't understand comments about how eu4 was supposed to be Paradoxes conquering game in comparison to CK2 and how they are nerfing their own gameplay with all the recent changes, but boy, i do now.
it just kills my game experience that i (as marocco, having assimiliated algiers, tunis and tripoli) wage war for 8 years against pretty much every muslim nation in middle east plus crimea (ottomans helping me), win it with 100% and yet i can't survive the shitstorm that comes afterwards if i take more than 5 provinces... and im not just talking rebels here, but OE making timurds, qor-something and every other major player including my +180 ottoman allies make me hate me (the last one i understand cuz i fucked them over in peace talks)....
it just pains me to see that i can expand faster in crusaders than i can in eu4, because the appeal of europa was exactly in how grand it was. yet i find myself fighting 40k rebel stacks in assimilated nations that couldnt muster up one third of that when they were independent. how am i supposed to immerse myself into a game that is trying to make me belive tongo-rebels can get as much troops as the ming, france and austria (top3 military powers in that moment)...?
and why on heavens don't they remain at their military level when i assimilate them for at least certain period of time? how do you flip the switch and people who used military tech lvl 2 get to fight me at lvl12? i take pride in how with non-westerners i have modern army that rivals or even surpasses europeans, so it takes all the joy in the world when those rebels go genious on me and match my tech, because i know i could've spent those points supressing them into obedience...

so i started my Marocco game, because i was curious how muslims fare in EU4...
first thing i had to decide was where i would expand, eastwards, or try to get iberia back. getting it was something that i've set as a goal in the game, so i decided to go east. i thought to myself how fun it would be for islam to consume europe from both sides, and made plans to ally myself with the ottomans for the long run, even tho they didn't really fancy me that much. i also found the idea of colonizing americas as muslim pretty cool, even tho as far as controling something completely, i've set africa+india as priority, so i knew investing in exploration as first idea wouldn't be good idea.
i did it anyways. and it actually payed off, here's why.
very soon after start of the game (5 years), Castille ends its peace with Granada, and i get to see them in action, which makes me very happy i'm already stealing land from Algiers. in the first war, with the help of Tunis+Tripoli, i take and core their land, and 5 years later, i vassalize them, with the plan to diplo-annex them. this annoys Tunis and gives me great excuse, which i was affraid i wouldn't get and would be forced to fight a battle which i couldn't win (europeans). i vassalize Tunis in one quick war, break their subjugation of Tripoli, who i get to diplomaticly vassalize even faster than Tunis, cause they love me...
at this point Mamluks are starting to notice i exist, and i get a good chain of lucky events: Portugals only province on African soil rebels when France utterly trashes them in some european war, and i get to annex Algiers vol.2 without invoking much anger from them, or rather, their powerfull allies Castille. Aragon is also doing its best making them occupied and giving me breathing space, while France is blobing like crazy, making Emperor in Wien nervous. only downside, Ottomans get stopped, first time ever in my games, with Serbia taking Bosnia, Ragusa and Wallachia and making some strong alliances (i also found it strange how Hungary took Croatian coast from Venice)... with them pegged-down, i get Otties into an alliance...
and start colonizing the south!
+ Show Spoiler +
at that point i have already decided that i won't be able to take Spaniards on before i take down Mamluks, and i won't be able to take Mamluks with Ottomans in bad shape, so i look to south to expand. taking exploration as first idea is usually bad idea people say, but my colonial range already gives me access to provinces in Sahara, and i start the work in the central part, cuz bastards from Portugal took the better, coastal route. when i get to them, Mali is in complete control of central Africa, but in 10 years i make sure to break their country apart, letting Jolof become my protectorate, and taking their first gold province (out of three total).
since Jolof is my first protectorate ever, and i just googled how they work after i've released them, i vow to never take one again, dissapointed and sad. to get the morale up, i start my 20 year campaign against sub-saharan minors (kanem, hause & co), waging war with one after another but never all at the same time, and ending them just in time to start over again with truces expiring.
then, window pops up, notifying me my worst nightmare came to life: Castille is at war with you!
...to be continued...

Nice! Look forward spending your next few months dancing around with your troops on those north african mountains trying to bait in those spaniards. Do you have a reasonable navy to keep him from landing (I doubt it, but you're looking pretty strong)?

I agree completly. The things i hate the most are rebels. And not that fact that they difficult to fight but thats its ridiculous. How can a province generate more soldiers than there are people living in it? And why are they the same tech as i am?
Make fighting rebels generate a lot of WE, or perhaps let them come from your own manpower. Just make it belivable, right now it is just stupid.
