Well there is also small matter of being able to to RM christians --> forming personal Unions and being eligible to become HRE Emperor after Peace of Westphalia.

That would be true for all Christian faiths though.

core cost reduction is by far the most powerfull thing in the game(for world conquest purposes) and it gets more powerfull the more you have as it works additively,

a HRE emperor catholic ottomans has 68% core cost reduction, while coptic HRE emperor ottomans has 78% core cost reduction, reducing the remaining core cost from 32% to 22%, so you can almost core 50% more land for the same cost and coring time, that is a badass bonus.

Is that ironman mode?

I spent a lot of time trying to reunite Japan as quickly as possible so I could get to the new world and colonize it try and get Renaissance and stake my claim there. Is this a dumb idea? Do any of you have any interesting ideas for Japan or strategy there?

The AI in Japan is really stupid. Allied tiny Daimyos trying to declare independence when I am not ready ruins like 2/3 of my runs.

Yes that is on Ironman. You cant get achievments without Ironman.

In regards to Japan if we talking WC (and assuming all previous exploits related to Japan were fixed) i think the most sound strategy would be getting to Europe ASAP converting to Catholicism and becoming HRE Emperor. If You manage to spawn colonization in Japan all the better.
It all really depends on Your goal, strategy should be tailored towards specific objective not other way around. Building colnial empire as Japan is decent target.

My strategy is to play a game where I get as big as possible without imploding. I don't know any "exploits", I'm pretty much playing a noobly straightforward way. I always make a mistake somewhere and something breaks my country, setting me back who knows how long so I quit and start over.

Colonization allows you to grow without many risks. In my last Japan game I got every coastal province/island in the Pacific, you will most likely have to fight some Europeans to accomplish this, but it's not a very difficult goal. Reach the spice islands via colonization and take over the Malacca trade node for lots of money. I'd recommend religious or humanist ideas, because converting buddhists to shinto is a real pain.

I had a great start in Mexico last game after my fastest ever unification of Japan but a war that lasted way too long against Mayan guerilla vassal armies led to some rebels springing up in Japan that eventually broke me.

If you're in a war, rebels won't be able to break your country. Most of the time you should be able to regain control and then peace out.

Your general strategy is fine though. Not much different than what I did when I played Japan. Since you're an island nation make sure to have a strong navy as well. That way nobody will be able to invade you.

I ended the war and shipped my army back across the pacific and it lost to the largest rebel stack and I kind of just gave up after taking out a couple loans to build mercenary armies that also got beat.

You should play as one of the Daimyos if you wanna avoid that its really better than playing actual Japan at the start IMO

No I meant I was playing as a daimyo. Any allied daimyos who declare independence automatically drag you into a war against a 12-16 stack of imperial troops. Idiot one province allies declare when im still recovering from a recent war and i get rolled and have to give back land to imperial japan.

i am actually wondering if its faster to start as japan at this point. i want to unite japan as quickly as possible while still getting exploration pretty fast for a chance at getting colonialism to spawn in japan.

When i did it i started as the top one i think, bottom left is okay too, ally when you need someone to fight wars but dont hold alliances, and work your way around
save japan itself for last then crush it when you have the rest of the country and it should be an easy win

So I'm playing Japan and its 1673 and I still am missing Renaissance and Printing Press. Wtf? How do I get these? I am at like a +123% tech penalty and behind everyone.

If you develope a province it gets progress towards the next institution. Though it takes something like 2000 monarch points to get the insitution in that province.

I was supposed to be developing provinces too? I have no idea when it's worth it to build buildings or develop.

What i did is pick one province, usually the highest development and just afk for 5 years or so and develop it. thats really the best way to get it early, it gives you a huge tech up on the other nations around you and all too

In my hosokawa game, don't know if it was intentional but Korean AI did development boost on his trade node province and brought very early Renaissance to Asia :D So i was lucky there
I brought Printing Press to Settsu and Colonization to Kyoto by spending all my monarch point. Global Trade tech spreads from every trade node in the world anyway so its not a problem. I think i am around 1640s and i have all instutions embraced and my technology is same as western powers.
