except I made the screen size bigger than my actual screen (ok, a bit bigger, and then downsized my screen) to fit in random other information (like schedule, twitter/whatever, webcam), so it's awkward to put it on my screen, even if it's "stay on top" :x
I'm thinking about learning Portal (no OOB). I've only been watching streams on SRL for a week or two, so I don't have a good sense of whether or not there's a "standard" approach, and more importantly, nor do I have a good sense of who the top runners I might try and emulate are. Are there any nicely commentated runs (like Cosmo's OOT/WW stuff) of Portal, or am I stuck with watching clips until I figure out what's going on on my own?
I think I already know most of the main tricks -- jumping on that tiny ledge to skip 08, portal halfway under the door to skip 09, portal bumping past most of 17 (and 16 too, but I keep dying on that one), jamming an object in the door in 18 -- but there's a lot of other stuff that seems hard to piece together from watching it done at speed (a crazy sequence of flings in 14, using a turret on GLaDOS). Someone talking about what they're doing would help immensely...

I know there was a Portal run during Sandython, though I don't think they uploaded anything to youtube. It had two guys doing commentary and explaining some of the things they were doing. I'll dig through the twitch archive tomorrow for you
From the top of my head I can try to give you some advice.
Firstly, seeing as you're doing No OoB, I suggest you try and route the game yourself. It will help you understand the game a lot and give you something to fall back on if you can't do the harder tricks. Obviously you don't have to do it, but it's something I've always recommended. The route doesn't have to be great, just a simple "go here, solve the puzzle like this" but it will help you learn the levels more and develop the mindset for running a little better. Then you can learn the crazy stuff later. That's just advice.
I know there is a Portal speedrunning wiki (http://cronikeys.com/portal/index.php?title=Main_Page). There is also an episode of The Sunday Sequence Break (google it and go to the twitch page) about Portal which might help out.
As for the best runners, SullyJHF has the No OoB best (it's on youtube) as far as I know but I can't remember off the top of my head who the best No OoB guys are (Portal 2 and 1 runners merge together. I think Inexistence is next after Sully). What I would suggest is going onto SRL, finding out who has the best times and races a lot then follow them on twitch and send them messages saying you want to learn it. There is a 90% chance they will teach you. If they don't, contact me and I'll hook you up more directly. If you don't want to bug the runners or don't know if you think they'll help, watch their stream for a bit first and ask them what's going on.
Also have you checked SDA to see if there's a run with commentary?
I have a friend who speed runs portal 2 he suggests you just go into #portal and to ask for S. or Minion. Although I agree with Flicky when he says that you should route it a bit yourself in order to get a better understanding of them game. It can really help compared to just blindly following strategies.
He also suggests talking to Xebaz and to look up something called ABH strats or AFH.
TL member raelcun doing Sc2 in 4 hours. That should be interesting to watch. Also I noticed "Squall's gunblade" is the grand prize this year? Last year's master sword prize was amazing I can't wait to see the gunblade.
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll look up that sandython run and see how far I get on my own first, but I'm happy to hear that people are relatively available and willing to help.
Is this thread TAS-friendly? Also, TAS-playaround-friendly? Cause some awesome dude over at the TAS-forums has reprogrammed Pokemon yellow using only controller input. Reprogrammed. As in, being capable of executing arbitrary code. With controller input only. My mind is still blown.
Skip to the end to find out what he used his newfound power for.
I know this isn't exactly a speedrun, but I couldn't find a better topic to post this in, and this just had to be shared.

That's just... wow.
This is one of those moments where I pause and think '...people are smart'. I wish I could do things that looked smart too.

This thread is totally TAS-friendly!
The cool thing about those memory edit things is that they can be used for speedruns AND if you learn it well enough, you can do it in a live speedrun.
First is a two segment run of finishing Pokemon Yellow with Memory editting.
Second is a live version of a TAS (obviously slower) by the unbelievable Mugg91. Basically he finds his way into the memory addresses of the game which are being represented as sprites and hits a trigger that screws things up so badly that the game plays the credits to get out.
This thread made me realise how much I enjoy watching people speedrun. It really reminds me of the times when my best friend and I tried similar things (although way less refined.. We were like 12 back then.. ) and competed over who had to buy the other one sweets. Happy times.
(We used to run Game Boy games mostly, like Asterix&Obelix, Zelda Links's Awakening and stuff like that. :>)
Wow, that Super Mario Land 2 run so awesome. Reminds me of those movies/shows that represent hacking as some sort of minigame. I never thought knew that could actually be somewhat plausible.
SpikeVegeta is doing a KH1 speedrun attempting to beat Tojmaru's WR. Currently -30 at Jafar
As for TaS runs I suggest lil gecko's FF9 run (Although you will need to download it from TaSvideos since the YANA sequence prevents it being on youtube) although its a JRPG it contains a lot of cool breaks that you probably won't see in a SS or even segmented run.
Spike got the WR with a 6:26:13.62 with a 4 game minute pause and 3 deaths.
Hey I'm a new speedrunner My first "speedrun" was actually Sonic 2 looong ago when I randomly fell on this trick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtDl-0B5U-g&feature=player_embedded#t=1073s and the first time I was like "hey sonic's supposed to be fast, and I found a trick to do a level faster, I should try getting the best time I could do", and when I actually learnt with internet that what I was doing was called speedrunning, my first watch was obviously Sonic 2, I was somehow "proud" when I saw the speedrunner doing the trick haha.
Afterwards I've done Super Meat Boy(could have done 42mins ended doing 50 T_T, only done 3 attemps) and Mega Man X(1 attempt 1h20 any%)
Right now I'm hesitating between Super Metroid (that I'll need to redo once without speedrunning), The Binding Of Isaac which I'll need to play a lot before too and Crusader of Centry which was one of my favourite genesis game. But I think I'll stick with Super Metroid which have a big community(even here) and a lot of techniques.
Pretty much all for my introduction, I suck at doing these :p Is there any TL-Speedrun irc channel or do you go to SDA chan? Hope I can get along !
