Prob won't be for a week or so, I need to wait until payday.

I noticed some games aren't emulator approved. As far as racing games go you are fine with an emulator as long as you stream it. Just don't be expecting to win any once you start racing people playing on a console who know what they are doing since emulators are generally slower. This is pretty much the case for any ps1/ps2 games since you can't emulate the faster disc speeds (Laughably its still better than running a PAL version of a game but only just) . The only time emulators are frowned upon is if you want to submit a speed run to SDA in which case you have to use an intended platform or an official emulator (Wii's virtual console or PSX) but I'm not sure you should be bothered by that yet.

Or is it just pick a game that you think you'd like to play and start learning how to speed run it? I posted about this in the FAQ in the OP. Have copied the text here: + Show Spoiler + How do I start? It’s simple, just pick up any game you like and play through it with speed in mind. If you can finish it and want to play through again, just repeat. If not, try another game. Once you’ve done that, search the web for videos or routes for the game and try and copy them. Now it may take a while before you can pick out optimisations or start making routes comparable to the established runners but that’s just natural. I personally was an absolute mess when it came to planning routes, but now I can pick them out and learn quite easily. It just takes practice. There’s a miss-comprehension that to be a speedrunner you have to be the best in the world at your game, which isn’t true. It doesn’t matter if it takes you 5 hours to beat Super Mario World (10:29.xx is current best time), everyone has to start somewhere. As long as you’re having fun, you can run a game. For most people, getting a competitive time is a bonus to the process. Think of it like competing against yourself. A great way to build on this is to start racing the game with other people and learn more that way. It doesn’t matter if you lose by miles and other runners are usually very keen to help out. I would gladly teach anyone everything I know about the games I run. It’s very important to bear in mind that your run doesn’t have to be good. Improvements will come with time and if they don’t, who cares? The speedrun community is very relaxed and is all about enjoying games. There’s no secret to it, just join in and have fun. What if I don’t want to/can’t play? Then go watch streams or videos! There are a lot of people in the speedrun community who don’t speedrun anything. They like to watch runs and just hang out in streams and whatnot. You don’t have to run a game to be a part of the community at all. Head to the SRL streams page or w00ty and just find someone to watch. If not, why not toy around with game and help out the runners? Just share what you know and contribute. No hard work required. How do I pick a game? This is one question I get asked a whole lot and there’s a few answers which should cover all bases: 1. Pick your favourite game – Simple really, if you love a game you’re more likely to play through it a lot. If you already know a lot about it, it will make the process a lot easier. 2. Pick a popular game – If there’s a lot of people running the game, odds are there’s a lot of documentation out there with everything explained. This means you won’t have to mess around with route planning and you can just dive in. 3. Let the game choose you – I spent years trying to find a game I wanted to run through. I kept trying this and that until eventually, I just found myself running Bayonetta. It was something I didn’t plan, it just happened. 4. Pick a game that destroyed you as a child – Another common one. I know a lot of guys who only run these games that they barely finished as a kid. It’s a nice sort of revenge on the title I suppose. 5. Pick a game you like to watch – If you find yourself watching a game you own on streams all the time, pick it up and join in. 6. Play the odds – Play every game until you find one you like. This has a high-burnout rate. This is a good time to remind you that you should initially run just for fun or to race. Starting off with the goal to submit to SDA will most likely result in you not finishing your run and just burning out on the whole scene or finishing a product you’re no-where near happy with. While SDA is not a super-serious community, the standards are very high now. You can set a goal to get a run up on SDA or beat an old time, but I wouldn’t suggest diving right in to it. If you really just want any old game to speedrun or race, Super Mario World any% and Link to the Past Master Sword races are easy to do and will have a lot of people torace today.

I was wondering, should it be a rule that one has to go totally undetected in a speedrun, since it deals with ninja stealth and all? I know it might slow some things up, but maybe that extra level of challenge might be fun to plan for?

Do you know the basic routes and stuff for Any%/100% (or whatever you might be interested in learning)?

Second glitch is a minor glitch that allows you to quickslide towards Karajan instead of the cinematic slow walk. + Show Spoiler [videos] + Level 9 5:00 on New Game + (includes the dojo scene) Level 10 3:13 on New Game + 10/13 levels done.

Plus I never had an SNES as a kid, first system was an N64, so I thought it'd be fun to learn. I dunno still. I don't own the consoles and dunno what those run. That's why I was going to do an emulator first. Figure find a game I have fun with on an emulator then go about getting the actual console if i end up serious about it in 6 months to a year.

If you haven't played it, it's a great game to play regardless of speedrunning intent. Probably my favourite game of all time. Best I've done on it is 1:10 any% which seems ok on a keyboard where my mapping makes it close to impossible to mockball and I can't shinespark if I'm running right to charge

They explain a lot of the tricks and the general thought process there and should tell you where to go to find out more. The Super Metroid community is very passionate and I know they'd be very glad to help out. Also Funkdoc was pimping Aylear's stream in front of 500 viewers.

You should go ahead and play through the game normally before you do anything else (if you've never played it). Truly one of the greatest games of all time, a true masterpiece. My best is a low 0:40 game time, which is quite decent. ![]() Anyone into SM should subscribe to Garrison's channel asap (http://www.twitch.tv/garrison_tt), a badass who is playing on a world record level. :D And there are several other amazing SM runners over at Speedrunslive besides him (Dbx, MSDS).

Interestingly enough on the second to last level I managed to wind up out of bounds. I need to investigate this further to see if it is reproduceable, or even useful anywhere. Level 11 is probably the dumbest level to speedrun I have ever seen. Quite literally there are checkpoints every 5 feet. This is because this is the level that introduces both the hardest enemy in the game and the teleport mechanic on your first playthrough. Teleport strats save a lot of time, and because of the plethora of checkpoints, you can literally just load checkpoints to reset the teleport cooldown as needed. I have refined the route down to four checkpoint resets, with a fifth one if I mess up a specific jump. The amount of time saved doing this is around 25 seconds depending on if I derp in the menus or not. And the final level + the final cutscene "level." The final actual level is just plain annoying, it takes about five minutes can probably shave it down a little more with some good play.

I saw the paper mario run from the Monday bonus stream and that looked pretty fun too. I remember playing paper mario back in the day and it was neat to see the ways people abused different badges and stuff. Btw thanks for all the replies everyone helping me out.
