There's no challenge, no real progression, no motivation to keep playing.
It's not a criticism of the game, I'm sure for people who enjoy the genre it's very good, but I still don't understand the appeal.
Everything through the story line quests of level 20 are essentially considered a tutorial into the game. Story line picks up and you start seeing more FF throwback lore thrown in after awhile. The early game is just to have new players become acclimated with the world. The game does become more challenging as you continue, but early game is painfully easy.

Alright then, that motivates me to try a bit further, thanks. That's a hell of a long tutorial though, I'm at level 13 and it feels like I've played for ages.

mmos are mostly challenging either because of hard group content or because you want to do things faster than other people. Solo questing wont challenge you most probably.

Or there is good PVP .. unfortunatelly there is only one of this type - DAOC - and that game is almost dead.

You get hit by ae not because of the extra 100 ms, but because SE's servers are shit and only update the players position every .3 sec.
Suggest to people to stand clear of this game until the 4th. For my server at least 1017 for this weekend has been relentless, even at 3am the servers are full.

IMO they are completely insane, saying to hold off for the server expansions rather than implementing an AFK timeout.
How hard can it be to implement a simple AFK timeout?

I wish I knew how to trigger getting into the servers Queue list... But regardless, I managed to log on at 9pm eastern time after only trying for maybe 5 minutes last night, we will see if I have the same luck today when I get off work I guess.

Is that why you sometimes get hit by attacks even though you moved out of the red indication area? I have noticed definite lag in casting and such, but always just assumed that is because I am in Japan playing on an NA server.

I haven't checked since 1.0, but if players still have a personal bazaar where they can sell items out of their inventory, an AFK timeout would defeat the purpose of that. They had a similar system in FFXI. Given how easy the market board is to use though, I don't know why they would still have that feature.
EDIT: I haven't played for 2 days. Server is full during peak AND off peak hours. I dunno wtf to do.

That seems to happen even if you have a really good connection. For me, if you don't move instantly you will probably get hit by aoe even if it shows you were clearly standing outside the hit box. Hopefully they tweak that a little bit. In a way it adds to the hardcoreness of this game's difficulty, which is surprisingly high. For instance, it took me 3 days before I could finally beat the Titan boss fight. There was always someone that literally always got hit by his one-shot aoe move (I have to admit that was me a handful of times xD), or a dps that couldn't beat the enrage timer, etc etc.
This game doesn't skimp on the difficulty at all, which is awesome and refreshing for an mmo.
Also, casting on the client side is a bit disconnected from the server side, with the only interaction being interrupts it seems. So i dont actually lose casting time by lag, which is important.
