Its all about practice. Just keep going on and on.

Just finished the alien base mission on impossible ironman and, at this point, I actually think I have a fair shot at finishing the game on impossible ironman.
My biggest concern atm is that I´ve lost 6 council members and I wont have new satellites this month cause I only have 29 engineers and need 30 for next uplink. Luckily the alien base mission reduces global panic so no council is in the red just yet.
I just cross fingers that I wont get abduction missions before the month is over.

I just got this game but before i get started i want to ask one simple question.

How hard is this game?
Usually I play through singleplayer games on the highest difficulty, would this be a good idea in this case? Keep in mind that I never played this kind of genre before :D

I can manage games like Mass Effect and Dragonage on highest difficulty, Baldurs Gate gave me some trouble but it was fun as hell.

My tolerance for dying is pretty high, so dying 15 times in a row shouldn't be a problem :D

Should i try hardest difficulty or is it smarter to go for a lower setting because highest will simply be impossible for a noob like me?

The game difficulty is different to any of those games. ME and DA are fairly "easy" or "doable" on the highest difficulty, and you save the game, so there isn't really a situation you will flip the table and say fuck this. Imho, those games "Hardest mode" is like normal difficulty.

Impossible Ironman is really hard, and classic ironman is hard.

Anyways the problem with going classic before impossible, is you will have to forget everything you learnt on classic anyways. You can see a lot of whines on XCOM forums or this thread about people who switched difficulty... because you just have to play the game differently. Same shit happens to people who goes from normal to classic too.

Normal to classic is a more natural transition. Just have to be smarter and more careful and not take bad shots.
On normal you can do some pretty stupid stuff and get away with it. Impossible seems to be a whole different playstyle though.

This game is really good, but some stuff just drives me insane. For example, I'm quite early in the game and yet now and then I intercept a extremely large UFO that one-shots my interceptor and then the panic increases from 2 to 4, and I risk losing the country.

I already lost Mexico, and have 3 countries at 4 panic. The panic system reminds me of contagion from Warhammer 40k, where you also had to constantly fight stupid mission just to keep the spread of tyranids low. Needles to say, I hated that system.

This is a marvellous game! I already beat it once, now going for the second time.
That said, there are things that baffle me, to say the least. For example - in the course of one turn i had three guys miss shots with 80+ chance to hit and the other three guys hit their targets with less than 40 cth. It's crazy.

Regardless, i can't stop playing it

That is normal. Or better than normal, depending what difficulty you are.

Depends on the difficulty, but you need to plan ahead the satellites because they take 20 days to build. But one country is ok, till you get full sat coverage you won't lose countries except if you screw terror missions.

Think about it as throwing a d10. If it's 80% chance, you hit with 1-8 and miss with 9 and 10. If it's 40%, you hit with 1-4 and miss with 5-10. Suddenly it doesn't feel as bad lol.

It feels bad when you miss a 90% shot that needed to get the kill to get rid of the dude that randomly popped behind your guys.

The council escort mission on the map with two high grounds and cars on low-ground in the middle with a single bridge between the high grounds: I get the VIP to my side of the map and am basically one Dash move away from the Skyranger. Two Thin Men drop, one right on top of the VIP and my Squad Sight Sniper and the other near my Support guy. I had 3/4 of my soldiers alive (one was covering the others when they went on the high ground). Both of them go Overwatch while flanking my whole group on basically point-blank range.

My Sniper missed a ~60% reaction fire on the dropping Thin Man and then he misses a 75% shot on the same guy who is still in Overwatch and flanking both the Sniper and the VIP (he would one-shot the guy that moves). On the other side my Support misses a 65% shot on the other guy (he would die as well if he moved).

I just lost my whole squad (mostly majors) on a terror mission, because 4-5 enemies just materialized out of thin air and flanked me.

Fuck this game, I'm off to Dishonored or couple others that I've been sitting on.

Here's another strange thing i noticed today:

I'm on a terror mission. One of my guys is standing just one tile away from a Chryssalid. I save the game, just in case. Then i move two tiles back, so that i can hide from the line of sight of some floaters and save a civilian at the same time. Then with the second move i fire at the monster with 95% (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) chance to hit. Miss. Rage. Load. Repeat. Miss again. Rage some more. Load again. I loaded the save about 20 times and all 20 times i did the same thing and my soldier missed a 95% shot. Then i decided not to save a civilian. I moved four tiles back, i fired with 88% chance to hit, this time successfully. I loaded again and tried this about 10 more times. Sure enough, all 10 times my guy killed the Chryssalid.

This left me very confused about the "chance to hit" mechanics. I can't help but think that the outcome of a shot is determined even before you fire - i can't think of any other explanation as to how my guy can miss the same shot 20 times in a row.

All the more reason to play Ironman mode.

RNG in most modern games works like this, where the results are seeded before, exactly to prevent people from saving and reloading until a shot hits. This does not make it less random. If you do something else, you get a different result, again random, but always the same if you do the exact same thing.

Yeah the RNG is determined before you fire the shot - I assume it involves variables like turn, where you're standing, where enemy is, etc. You can't reload to get the perfect shot off without starting from further back in the mission, I imagine.

It's predetermined and intended to prevent perma reload obviously.

Congrats. Now do it on impossible!

Count on 200+ tries, hehe.
