CRAP! The game crashes reproduceably in the intro mission when you kick in the door of the building. WTF. Halp....

Didn't crash for me, so I guess it's not a regular thing. But I've read about increased number of crashes after yesterdays patch. Probably check out the official forums if anyone has the same problem or maybe a solution

Thx for the tip, apparently someone else has the exact same problem. Appears to be connected with corrupted cinematics. No solution yet other than disabling them. We will see and hope for the best.

EDIT: Revalidated the files and now need to redownload 8 gig....
EDIT2: Steam version (original ofc), i5-2500K, GTX460 , 8 Gig RAM. That's not the problem, newest drivers and stuff. Could very well be corrupted files.

And ofc you got orginal version of the game ? , or some shitty cracked ?
Write what computer spec do you have.. , do you have new graphics drivers , directx etc..

I think fundamentally, abduction missions give the game a way to put you on a clock. You're going to have to have increased panic over time, so you're forced to move the story forward. It also makes ways to decrease panic - like terror missions - more appealing because without the terror mission it may be entirely possible that you'll be forced to let go of a nation.

Just starting playing, first XCOM game in my life. I dont know why I never got into it before, but holy crap. This is great.

Lost my initial heavy assault guy in the first damn mission after the tutorial because I was an idiot, I didn't think the game's AI would be that punishing o_o Man, I felt like crap too the entire time afterward he died. After that my troops just went into full panic mode and everything.

Going to finally start this today once I get home, first owned by EU release date followed by 14 hours shift.

Whats the consensus on recommended difficulty to start with? Sounds like Normal + Iron Man is the way to go? Tempted to go Classic + Iron Man but I got the idea that you're bound to fail with that path for a couple playthroughs at least?

Normal+ iron man or Classic without iron man seem to be the consensus.

I agree with most of the criticisms, especially any pertaining to the camera, but the game is still awesome. I know I'm having a blast with it.

In the 2 hours that I could play it so far I got owned hard several times on Classic + Iron Man and not in the frustrating "AI cheats" way but in the "you've been outmanoeuvred" way, so I think I'll be sticking with that, however if you don't like losing or getting frustrated then pick Normal

I've seen both TB and JP streaming this game this week. It's been great fun! JP names his soldiers after various SC2 pro-gamers/personalities!

I been naming my soldiers after famous action movie actors and actresses and then giving them nicknames based on their movie characters or movies themselves. In my first play on Classic+Ironman I killed a lot of them. Arnold died fast, so did Statham and Jet Li (even Jet Li jr died :D). I also lost Snipes and Snipes jr :D

Longest lasting soldier was sniper Scarlett "Black Widow" Johansson. She managed to survive to double tap and skeleton armor :D

Well even in original XCOM you were given soldiers that were basically not worth giving a rifle and only real use would be an unarmed psi-decoy or door opener. It's funny how the agency you recruit them from can't be a little selective who they send over, the elite fighting force on earth..oh yea this guy you gave me is a coward, weak and has bad lungs since he runs out of energy in 5 seconds. What kind of screening you guys do on these again? :D
Randomizing the classes is dumb though.

Not true. They were good for scouting.

Also you could give each of them a primed grenade and run around with them and play suicide bombers. Just don't do that while near the ship and when everyone is in a big group :D

I will name my soldiers after politicians, so it won't hurt if they die Just need to restrain myself from suiciding them, also they will be more likely to just run away if they panic..

I started on Classic + IM, did that for a few tries, but decided to drop down to Normal + IM. The difficulty difference is quite large between the two and a mode that is between normal and classic would be rather nice. Ironman mode I consider pretty much the only way to play. Especially in a turn-based game, where you have all the time in the world to plan your moves, you should be punished for making mistakes. Save/reload-cheesing allows you, in principle, to just try different moves in tricky situations and pick the one that is best.

On a slightly different topic: I seem to distinctly remember that in Classic *with* Tutorial, you at some point in the tutorial are asked to launch a satellite and you have one available for launching. However, when you play without the Tutorial, you don't have this free satellite and have to build it first. This seems like a pretty big difference, given how important satellites are. Anyone else notice this? It's not an issue on Normal, because there you already have the spare satellite even if you don't do the Tutorial.

Huh. You can't turn off ambient occlusion nor depth of field without breaking something, at least in the demo.
I guess it's a no-buy then, as my laptop can't handle ambient occlusion with decent framerates.

I noticed that too. I'm not sure that having the freedom to do as you choose at the start of the game outweighs just straight up getting a free satellite (though I also didn't check if your money reserves are any different at the start if you turn off the tutorial)
