If it's anything like Arma 2, motion blur and 1st person/3rd person switching is easily changed. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Not to mention the animations may even be changed to be much smoother at some point along the line. Just like how they were talking about making completely new zombie animations, but they just aren't in the game yet.
I think people aren't realizing just how early of an alpha this game is at currently. Which does suck because it means release is quite a ways off still. But going from early alpha all the way to release, in any game really, is an extremely drastic change. I wouldn't worry too much about almost anything that you find wrong with it right now, as it'll probably be fixed somewhere down the line.

With ARMA3 alpha already out I wish they had just made it an expansion for that - ARMA3 will be out fully before DayZ probably and be a lot more polished. I've played a bit and although the scenarios and stuff are limited there's a lot you can do on there and it looks fantastic.
Seriously they had an initial release date of the end of 2012 and its already March and they are in a very limited alpha.

Yea the dev blogs are very depressing. After watching ARMA III and how good and polished that looks i wonder wtf was rocket doing besides hiking on some mountain and talking about minecraft?

IMO they needed to ride the hype, keep going with the DayZ mod and develop that until they could start work on an ARMA 3 expansion with a kind of DayZ 2.0 That way they'd still get income through sales of ARMA 2, not waste time on a standalone that will look out of date and take too long to make, use the development of ARMA 3 to work alongside the developers to create their own content and make the same amount of money through sales by selling it as an official expansion of ARMA 3. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

I just can't wait to throw my money at Dean. I read somewhere that DayZ standalone is going to follow the minecraft model, is that still true? I hope it is :c
|
I'd assume so, since ARMA 3 just did it pretty much too. I bought the alpha for £20 and you get the full game worth £45 at the end of alpha and beta testing.

ARMA II style graphics are more than fine, the gameplay is what is crucial. Whilst it would be nice to be on the latest and greatest engine I feel that this often takes precedence over more important elements. Really there is nothing wrong with how Arma II looks, the problems with DayZ (mod) are first and foremost hacking and secondly some controls are a little clumsy (picking up loot for example). If they can fix those issues and also add in an element that promotes zombie survival over pvp shoot 'em up 24/7 then all the better. I trust Rocket after seeing how well generally most things in the mod were done (i.e realistic weapons, hunger, survival) that he wants a polished end product not some Call of Duty half polished turd/expansion pack.

I agree to a point. I still believe that scavage PVP is the main force that drives people to play this game. While PVE can become more engaging and by making the environment more hostile you create a greater depth then the mod has. But we need combat and movement features that where implemented in arma 3, if not better. I feel disconnected from my avatar. It does not do what I want it to do, it can't because of the clunkiness. Mending that in anyway or form should be high on the priority list. Something I fear is not.
When you talk about modern shooters like CoD (BO/MW3) and Battlefield (3) they have something that is very important to me as a gamer. You can attune yourself to the avatar. For example in Battlefield 3 I flew the AH-1 Super Cobra I got so attuned to it that I felt like a bird flying around the battlefield, a very dangerous bird That is the closest I have ever felt to a digital object it being an extension of myself.
With Arma2 well you guys know Arma 2. But the game concept is so great and the feeling of the world that you just accept this. However this is going to be a standalone this is not a mod there is a new engine, heck they say they are making their own engine based off Arma2 and Arma3 engine.
I see rocket fixated on environment and PVE and it just frightens me. And I know I am not alone on this.

For people complaining about clunkiness:
right off the bat, i noticed in the last video i posted that the vault animation has been dramatically improved. it looks better and responds quicker. rocket also said that they are working on reducing downtime between animations, which seems to be exactly what you guys want. most of the combat and movement featured in arma 3 are in the dayz standalone, if not all of them.
i feel like you guys are just complaining for the sake of being the black sheep. this isnt call of duty or battlefield. you cant go from sprinting for 5 minutes, to jumping into prone, to iron sights, to ranging your gun, to hold your breath, to do a few rolls and then shoot with pinpoint accuracy. this isnt an arcade shooter. sorry. i dont want it to be. neither does anyone else that played this game before it became the casual-friendly, start with a dmr and silenced beretta and gps with nameplates and 3rd person, game that it's been dumbed down to now on almost every server.

As long as I'm terrified of everything, as I was when I first started playing the mod, I'll be happy.
I remember the first randoms I played with, we just sat in the woods in the PITCH BLACK near Zelenogorsk planning a supermarket raid. I the end I followed one guy while 2 others "covered" us from the hillside. I had characters that were alive for several weeks just because of being too scared to go anyplace populated, because guns were so rare. I had a CZ and a ghillie and roamed the west side of the map feeling like an actual zombie apocalypse survivor.
Now, I just get a military offroad vehicle, and go and loot some high powered rifle and snipe noobs in Cherno. Not unique, not groundbreaking. Still fun, but only a fraction's worth.

And then people spawn, go kill the geared guys camping hills sniping the noobs in the city. The cycle of DayZ!

Lol its true. The first 2 weeks of DayZ...are absolutely terrifying and horrible, and nightmarish the entire time. But after that zombies are like "lawl silly zombies".
but first 2 weeks generally consists of running and screaming and eventually getting eaten by zombies, or shot at by strangers and crying to urself lololol.
spending 3 days to get food, drinks, a winchester, and a map... spending the rest of your time trying to hide/avoid other players.
3 weeks in your running through cherno with an AS50, giving them away lol

So Dean was at PAX, he did a 1h panel and gave some interviews. He didn't give any ground breaking information, but he showed us a lot of small details and pretty much confirmed how anal he is about this game. He treats it like a baby and every small detail matters. Which is nice but means that the real final version is at least 1,5 year away. For those of you who didn't read up on all the info's here is nice document from the panel with video links and transcription of Q&A. Videos are real die hard fans, 1h with very little info I would suggest just to read through the document. Click me!
Good video is an interview with Rocket and some gameplay on his laptop. + Show Spoiler +
What I don't understand is one thing, maybe someone can help me, it's about alpha version (which is supposed to be up for 1 year). He talked many times about minecraft model, get in early for a discount to help polish the game, now is the alpha this "minecraft" which will be open to public for let's say 10-15$ ? Isn't alpha always internal, beta goes out to the public for testing ?

Hype is overrated and mostly just leads to people left feeling disappointed. It's generally a better idea to actually release a game when it's in a nice and playable state regardless if people aren't "as excited" to play it. If it's a really good game it will probably do fine anyway, especially in DayZ's case considering how their competitors in the genre is doing.

I know You are frustrated, You've shown it on many occasions, but from what I can piece together from all the devblogs and snippets of information, the development of the game change it course dramatically somewhere in late 2012. What I presume happened Bohemia gave Rocket a lot of resources (which he didn't expect), both in $$ and men power (most likely Arma 3 devs because it came earlier then people though) and he realized that instead of polishing DayZ he can create a whole new game by tapping into new resources like engine and motion capture studios etc. So basically it changed from renovating the house into building it from ground up on in new location on undeveloped land.

Looking out of date is irrelevant to dayz. The original has been looking out of date for the entirety of it's lifetime. You don't play dayz for it's amazing explosions or lighting effects. I thought we were over bench mark whoring once minecraft became pretty much the biggest thing ever.

If some EURO want to join me on a private hive server (hungarian patriots - the server has increased heli crash and more military bases) I have a spare as-50 thermal (you get 1x10 and 1x5 ammo to start), m4a3, mk16 with lots of stanag .. a offroad, gillies, full medical supply, g-17, and if you want anything else I am sure we can find it
My scottish/german mates may fall short in the next few days/week but we should be around 4 people If you want to check the server, its 5.63.147.156:3374. There are AI bandits/survivors+military that patrol the map and shoot each other, bandits also kill you (and they are damn accurate) but survivors only shoot if your humanity is below 0 and/or you shoot at them ! There are plenty of weapons and bases around the map (for example military base in kamenka e.t.c. ) so its not a slow server.
