Was thinking about this, since stats don't seem THAT important, obviously they're useful, but it seems to be more about decision making, patience, and understanding mechanics. Well lvling up gives me a sense of accomplishment for making good decisions. Gota give kudos to those who finished at level one. Wont the bosses take hours to kill if their equipment isnt that good cus they dont have the stats to use them? Btw I dont get scaling(maybe cus im not at that part of the game yet). I've got the drake sword with the whopping 200 damage on it but other swords in the later games are better cus of this parameter bonus thing. What is that may i ask? As far as i know, Drake sword has no scaling bonuses, which is why there is no letters associated with it under "parameter bonus". So the sword is good for lil while, but over time, something like this http://darksouls.wikia.com/wiki/Large_Club could surpass it in damage because it has an "A" under the strength bonus parameter, meaning all the points in STR will "scale" the weapon so that it does more damage. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can clarify that haha, but thats what i know so far! Also, add on top of that the fact that you can use Titanite shards on shittier weapons which have a bonus parameter, you can make a shitty longsword be almost as effective as the Drake sword. And maybe even better as time goes on. I'm not sure using a large club (or a great axe, or any of the very heavy weapons) so soon is a good idea :o The movesets are so slow that you'd better know the game and the enemies very well before risking a 2 seconds delay before each attack command and the attack itself :D I have stopped watching yesterday when you died on queelag with it tho, dunno what you did after. Also a good thing to learn is backstabbing, train versus a single, easy enemy, raise your shield and let him hit it, then when he staggers move behind him and attack for a critical hit ! Perhaps you already know tho. Damn, maybe ill wait before i start upgrading that club then, Drake is just not cutting it for me right now (mainly cause im bad tho haha). I may have to see if its worth upgrading a more normal 1H so i can keep the shield. Also, you guys are raping my brain with info lol. In a good way of course. if clubbing is your thing you should do it, shards don't take long to acquire at all as you can always buy them for 400 souls or so from the blacksmith if you don't want to farm for them for a couple minutes. if you change your mind you can always just upgrade another weapon since its not a huge investment, the only thing you need to know is what weapon/ upgrade path you are opting for and what stats you need to use said weapon, and stat needed for scaling if at all before you choose to spend points on anything besides vitality/endurance.
I'm definitely going for a Sword/Board style, although the Club was serving me pretty well this afternoon, i did miss the block.
Just read up on the Spider Shield, would have made my travels through Blight far easier, them Poison Snipers were annoying as hell! Too bad it didn't drop for me yet, seems like a good shield overall.

Humanity number increase droprate (I don't remember by how much ><) (and only in human form I think, but it's so long ago I'm not certain), but you can very easily farm humanities later from an easy monster available en masse close to a bonfire. So I think no point in having humanity above 0 if you aren't in human form. And in human form everyone can invade you and kill you =p
Anyway, perhaps you're liking the great club (and you have the STR to use it with a shield ?), in that case just enjoy it =) But it's not really a first game weapon, actually I'm not even sure how you got one.
And yeah, you can upgrade very liberally as upgrades are not expansive, except the very last upgrade of each weapon "path" which require a one/new game item.

My problem is that i can use the great club with shield, but with the shield equipped it puts me passed the weight threshold, so i run/move slow as shit. So ive just been 2H it for now till my endurance is higher.

I find shields worthless in dark souls bar unless you're talking about pvp, dodge is so much better it's not even funny. Plus there are some bosses that are almost impossible to beat if you're used to blocking instead of dodging.

So your advice to a newbie is "shields are worthless in dark soul" ? =P

Wouldn't mixing a bit of both block/dodge be the best? Specially vs some bosses, ive found that knowing which attacks to block and which ones to dodge was quite helpful.

I dodged and blocked against the taurus boss since i found out the hard way that his attacks are physical. Thinking outside the box is what this damn game is trying to teach the players

Also don't forget that block works on everything, magic explosions included, dragon breath, etc. Most of the time it's better to avoid those, but if you can't, shield up !
|
Regarding block, its really good if you have str/endurance for like artorias greatshield or any of the other high end ones because its more reliable and allows you to stagger enemies, that said ive been most succesful using dodge.
Also you can get two guaranteed final stones for the regular upgrade path, think you forgot the siegmeier quest line reward one. You can also farm them from darkwraiths in new londo but takes forever...

You get spider shield in sewers above the giant rat (secret passage behind where you meet the first butcher before you rescue pyro guy ) and in valley of the drakes on the bridge

Drake Sword is usually considered a bad idea for beginners because it's really strong as soon as you get it, falls off heavily later on (since it doesn't scale well) and by the time it falls off... you have no experience with any other weapon and have no clue what you actually like.
The very nature of the game is that basically any weapon works for PvE so what you pick should entirely depend on what moveset/looks you like the most. Find such a weapon, start upgrading it and you'll do a lot better.
In terms of upgrades there are technically a lot of them, but for now only worry about normal and elemental (lightning/fire). Elemental weapons have NO stat scaling and split damage 50/50 between physical and an element. In practice this means that they do insane damage for lower levels (since you just need the base stats to be able to use it at 100%).
The normal upgrade path scales very well with more investment into Str/Dex and is what I'd recommend for your first playthrough. I'd honestly aim to finish the game with like 40 in Vit/End/Dex/Str because that allows you to just grab any weapon you find and play around with it to see how much you like it.
Full weapon upgrade guide.
edit: DO NOT upgrade to +15 unless you're really, really sure you want to use this weapon. You need a Titanite Slab for it which drops a limited amount per playthrough and is a bitch to farm.

When you're really good at dodging, the game becomes a cakewalk, but when you're working on it, dodging gets you killed constantly. Holding a shield and dropping it after every block though? Everyone can do that and as long as you're leveling your stamina, you'll walk through all the bosses. There are attacks which can barely be blocked, but the vast majority of enemies and bosses can safely be block n spanked, which is far easier to do.
|
Also, upgrading the shield is equally important as upgrading your weapon for newer players. Upgrading raises shields "stability" and you will lose less stamina with each block. With a +10 shield you should be good for the first playthrough.
Upgrading a shield to +11-15 consumes valuable titanite chunks that are better to spend on weapon upgrades.(unless you feel like farming them)

I'm pretty sure the humanity drop rate bonus applies whether you're human or hollow. It definitely works both ways for the added curse resistance.

Like you said, once you learn to dodge properly, the game becomes a lot easier. And it is not that hard. And I had a lot more fun dodging everything than I had blocking, but that is subjective. All I'm saying is: try it, maybe you'll enjoy it like I and most people I know that played the game did.

Trying to sunbro Capra Demon atm but the summons are very thin today
I think 25 might be a bight high soul level for this boss really, would've been better off ~18
Any other warriors of sunlight got advice for which bosses are popular to be summoned at SL 25+? I'm guessing O+S

Alright, made some more progress. Beat the butterfly boss 1st try, was really easy. Now im Valley of the Drake, and i beat that giant dude spewing purple toxic shit. All it gave me was a dragon scale or something. Taking a break for a bit, but where do i go after that? There is like 6 purple dragon's guarding this giant gate, am i supposed to do something special here? I thought maybe killing that cliff dragon would have done something, but it didnt, and those lil' purple dragons take forever to kill. Not sure where to go from there.
Oh and i also found Astora's sword, the bonus parameters dont seem that great, although i guess it has some magic damage as well. Right now im just upgrading this http://darksouls.wikidot.com/butcher-knife , since it had the best bonus of all my weapons i had, with a B for STR, and it also has some life-steal as well.

Have you beat the Gaping Dragon? It's an optional boss but I think it's worth it. You can find it in the Depths(I believe its entrance is close to the Capra Demon, but I'm not 100% sure). Otherwise go to Sen Fortress. It's the big castle that was closed in Undead Parish, right next to Blacksmith Andrei.
