I've been trying to derive it for a while now based on some calculator that I found online, but I can't seem to find a site that lists the formula itself. It seems that the % of Attack Power which is converted to damage is a function of the ratio of attack/defense, i.e.
Damage = Attack x f( Attack/Defense)
where f is some function - but for the life of me I can't solve for f.
Back on page 52 I posted a link to some testing I found from another forum. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=327011¤tpage=52#1028
The actual formula couldn't be derived, but it did provide some interesting data, about how damage blocked has diminishing returns, making very high damage weapons affected less by armor than weaker ones. Perhaps you may find some use from it.

Using your testing and the formula from the previous page, I compared your actual testing to the result of the equation:
- Low AR on low defense: AR: 275 Def: 138 Damage = 184 Formula result = 180
- High AR on low defense: AR: 658 Def: 138 Damage = 528 Formula result = 555
- Low AR on high defense: AR: 275 Def: 418 Damage = 58 Formula Result = 59
- High AR on high defense: AR: 658 Def: 418 Damage = 380 Formula Result = 380
You can see the results are pretty close, with only about a 5% variance. This means that the equations aren't exact, but that they follow the same general trends, which may be as good as we're going to do...

As good as we're going to do is about what you have to settle for most of the time. I wish the spreadsheet those guys used was still available, it had something like 15 weapons with 4 upgrade types on it, but the download link is gone now. It's good that the rough formula you found is fairly accurate though, it's only really off in the extreme cases.

I just beat the game for the first time last night. I have to say - my favorite fight was probably the knight artorias one in the additional content. The guy's rough, and necessitates a lot of dodging and the ability to instantly jump in his face and deal a ton of damage to keep him from charging up. Man, what a fight. Anyone else want to weigh in on their favorite fight?

Artorias was a lot of fun. Always feel like you're one mistake away from dying, even when you have plenty of health.
O&S is similar for me, but it depends on the type of character I'm playing. I like the drawn out, patient fights like that, but on some characters/builds/etc it's just outrageous. 1-2 hits from death (which is much more tedious to deal with when there's two baddies) but they also feel like they take no damage.

My first time fighting Artorias was a nightmare. I was using the Black Knight Greataxe which is rather difficult to punish him with. My favorite fight is Kalameet. I've played through a few times so his flame breath is one of the few boss moves that still scare me. O&S are still stressful but its just not that fun.

I was a newb havel wearing mass strength, poise, armor hp, asshole my first play through (not on purpose just happened that way). And Artorias was really easy, hold shield up, block, counter attack.
Come to think of it, after S&O, other than Bed of Chaos, I 1 shot every boss in the game with the same strategy. Power within, block, go 2h +14 Great Axe, smack a couple times, repeat, boss dead. Tank builds too strong.

I love my great club... but the heavily armored build you're describing - I'm surprised that worked. How much health/armor did you have? You're describing the character I wanted to play before I knew anything about the game - but I got to some point and it felt like things hit me too hard to "tank".

I'd have to login when I get home from work but from memory.
full havel set grass crest shield havel ring ring of favor and protection
40str HP Endurance
Those were basically the only 3 things I put stat points into. I didn't use any magic (other than power within) and I didn't have any miracles either. I think I was SL91 or SL96 when I decided to go kill Gywn.

For me every boss fight gets a lot better when using only a dex weapon and no blocking/buffs/spells. Favourite ones are O&S, Kalameet, Artorias, Sif and 4 Kings.

yeah my 2nd character uses 2h chaos blade, no shield blocking on bosses and it's really fun. I feel I'm a much better player playing on my dex character. I actually have to dodge and can't take many hits with almost no armor or HP.

Erm.... does 2-handing a chaos blade do anything other than occupy a hand?? Seems like no, doesn't it?

It doesn't deal more damage in 2-hands, does it?

I think all weapons that do physical damage get a bonus from using 2 hands. The 1.5x modifier you get from strength is added on top of that for weapons that do scale with strength.

So, the game is now randomly telling me that it can not connect to g4wl. Is their system down, or is this something on my end? And what effect does that have? It is telling me that it won't save my progress while not connected.

Every weapon, regardless of type or upgrade, deals more damage 2-handed, even elemental weapons and shields(except claws can't be 2-handed ). The multipliers for this 2-handed damage seem to vary between weapons though. There is also the additional 1.5x str modifier that can deal extra damage on top of that.
