This nostalgia thing can really get into people's heads. Civ5 is recognized by nearly every major publication and thousands of people as being a really really really solid game. People confuse THEM liking an older game better, with the new game ACTUALLY being bad.
I'll agree with that generally, but not in the case of Civ5. 1-unit-per-tile, the decision to push happiness to a civilization-level metric killed the game. Infinite city sprawl is back, and good Civ players can routinely beat the game at Emperor difficulty by exploiting broken game mechanics.
It's actually bad, and the fact that (last time I checked), more people play Civ4 multiplayer than Civ5 multiplayer is all the evidence you need.
IGN, GameSpot, PC Gamer and the rest spend most of their days sniffing the butts of AAA publishers, hoping for a few golden nuggets of advertising. When was the last time they actually gave a AAA title a bad review? Watch, I'll predict the scores of the next Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, Civilization, Final Fantasy, Total War, right now. 8.5 or higher.
Also, I predict tons of people buying the game on March 17th for the free EA game and server crashes all over again.
Probably.

AAA titles in modern gaming industry rarely are just flat out stinkers, some can be unfulfilling, some can alienate their excising player base because changes to the franchise like SC5 but it's pretty rare for a hyped up well funded title to just be a complete stinker that is universally considered a poor or bad game. I think duke nukem would probably be the most hyped game that was a disappointment in terms of just gameplay of recent recall not sure if it was AAA, AAA titles is a measure of money into the project.
There are some problems with the logic for this game though http://imgur.com/a/gVKs3

Exploiting broken game mechanics is a time honored tradition of how to beat a Civ game on high difficulties. That's how it's worked in every other Civ game; why should Civ5 be any different? Also, good Civ players should be able to routinely beat the game at Emperor difficulty; that's what makes them good.
As for "Infinite city sprawl is back"... perhaps you haven't played it very much, but victory in this game with small civilizations is very possible. Yes, you can have a large civilization, but you don't have to in order to win. Indeed, certain victory conditions basically require you to keep your number of cities small.

You realize that there is a difference between "bad" and "arguably not as good as the previous one", yes?

Has it occurred to you that, maybe, these games aren't that bad? I personally detest CoD, but that's because I hate CoD gameplay. Is it "bad" in any sense? No; it's just gameplay that I don't much enjoy. The games set out to achieve a certain thing, and they do achieve that very thing.
That's not to say that reviews aren't being bought; they certainly are. But even if I were to say that CivV was not as good as CivIV, it's still a very good Civ game (certainly better than Civ3 and Civ1). Certainly not "bad" in any way.

This screen shows exactly whats so terrible about SimCity. Does this look like a City? No, this looks like a district with maybe 1000 people.

So the whole region play is broken then. Which is weird, why would it be broken for EU when it seems to work for US?
It says that they've disabled all that stuff until they get their servers running properly

I'm down. Are regions with other cities needed for trading and tourism?

I'm down as well! Could we play on US East so that it's not too far away from us EU people?

Not sure on the specifics though if one helps another but it seems possible to set up residential cities if they are surrounding by other cities with industrial etc. So far i couldn't set up a pure industrial city because it takes some residential to get the industrial city started then people will start to commune when it grows.
As for region play it's working for some people and not others so it can be iffy.
Also i'd be down for a shared region. I think there are 2? 16 citied maps

Maybe 1000 people?
I'd like to think that is just a massive exaggeration but if you actually believe that figure to be accurate then goddamn.

Alright, if you crave SimCity, go make the server! Make it private 16 city with password anything and post it here? Preferably on US East some of the less populated servers as they are generally more stable?
|
uh private regions are invite only are they not..?
|
Oh shit, maybe you're right. Maybe public? But then we'd risk randoms filling up the region?
I think only the hosts needs to add people to friends list. So would it be a huge issue to have 15 extra TL peeps on your friendslist? It's not as if people use Origin for anything anyway right? ^^
|
US East public with a shitty name no one will join maybe? Private seems like a hassle to invite unless we can invite without adding friends etc.
|
Yeah, It seems like servers take a little bit time to fill up. The ones that are full are probably servers that are arranged with people. So it should be fine to just host one public.
|
Well, I'm game for a TL region.
|
I'm such a sadist, I love watching my city burn and suffer. Screw the Fire department.

Well the Best Buy I work at has pulled the item from the shelves. Yesterday it had a spot in our PC section with a tag and at least 10 copies sitting there in security cases.
Today customer asks me where they are. I go show him and find nothing there. Tag is gone, everything has been re-arranged so they no longer have a spot. No copies in the back at all and I can't find the item in our employee system. I knew amazon pulled theirs and I asked some co-workers and no one knew what happened to them. I know we didn't sell 10+ copies in <24hours. We probably have sold 10 copies total over the entire time the game has been out, no way we sold more randomly in 1 day. If we actually did sell out, a spot would be empty on the shelf still with the tag and everything.

USA is known as the Country of the CoD Kiddies that only play on Consoles. Of course they don't sell that great there. Germany, UK and probably the rest of Europe plays at least 80% on PC - thats the playerbase to target. The reason for the horrible DRM is that its the first PC-Only Game from EA in a long, long time.

Half the copies we sold were mostly to employees anyway (myself included) we get a nice discount lol.
I blame it on the parents.
