I remember a few years ago when the idea to fight piracy was to actually give legit consumers more stuff, like a good multiplayer, free DLCs etc. The worst thing is that after such a move to reduce piracy, buyers get to pay more than your average pc game (60-80$ ?). Sadly, EA will keep ruining franchises they own, sigh. That doesn't work pirates just crack those and then pirates get everything and more actually has gotten to the point where the pirate gets all forms of buy first DLC, really the only people it acutally hurt were people who bought from a reseller party ie like gamestop. The only proven established way to crush pirating is to put it up on servers, eventually people get though shady channels the stuff off the servers but then you just crush illegal servers though legal means.

Actually, it would be best for everyone if all this DRM nonsense ceased entirely. Pirates are going to pirate games no matter what and all this DRM bullshit usually hurts the legit customers as it makes it harder for them to log-in/play/enjoy/whatever. It's been years since companies started this anti-piracy campaign and to no avail so far (SC2 was cracked even during the beta, go figure). Developers should just accept the fact that not everyone is going to obtain their product the way they'd like to and live with it. As far as I know, people who can afford games and like the product have no real qualms of buying it instead of pirating. Hell, when I started working, got my regular cash inflow etc. I made it my mission to legitimately buy every single game I ever pirated and liked. Obviously I wouldn't pay for games I pirated but which turned out to be garbage.

Obviously I wouldn't pay for games I pirated but which turned out to be garbage. Pirates have the same effect as eliminating patent and Copyright laws, people who own things wish they want to sell have to obfuscate how things work in order to protect their revenue from reproductions of their product. Saying pirates are going to pirate so why bother is pretty defeatist attitude. Pirates don't really hurt big publishers as much as they hurt small publishers, pirates are one of the reasons for consolidation in the early to mid 2000's of game companies which we now just see as EA, Ubisoft and Activation but i don't think people necessarily see that. One of the best ways to hedge against piracy losses is to be bigger then your competition the loss of revenue is masked more because your reach is larger which means your initial budget to how many games you need to sell to break even is different.

An effective DRM shouldn't just be 24/7 online connection. It should also give rewards for being a paying customer, such as online perks or special buildings. Look at star craft 2 and the large library of UMS or the efficient match making. These are things that pirate will never get to enjoy and reward paying customers.

So it's unlikely to be as bad as D3 or SC5 launches, still it's always just safer to wait a couple days and see how servers play out with alot of these not a console port games. After this Simcity bs I canceled my HOTS preorder. Never ordering a game without reading reviews first again. This was some bs.

I know this is not related to Sim City directly, but the very first paragraph speaks volumes about gaming industry today - "I believe," he tells me, "that if you want to succeed, creative vision has to inform business policy and not the other way around - that's crucial for us.". Unfortunately, in the case of Sim City, it was clearly the other way around. I despise EA with all my heart.
