i remember fondly my time through BG2 as i was laid up with a broken ankle and had nothing better to do.
If Obsidian is doing work, I'll be excited. They know how to write a game.

oh god oh god oh god. BG and BG2 took away months of my life. this is going to be amazing I hope

i dont know how you all can be so hyped about a new baldursgate because of that website.
The optimal scenario you can hope for here is a BG2 re-release with enhanced engine.
This is also what the websites code hints at, also steam has registered a ID for BG2 recently. just saying.

First I was intrigued.
Then I realised it'd probably use the terrible 4th edition ruleset rather than 2nd edition. Now I'm not really interested anymore.

Lately there seems to be more of a trend with old school devs going back to their roots. Tim Shafer is doing an adventure game and Brian Fargo announcing Wasteland 2. I feel like it isn't the game devs fault that these games get bastardized but has more to do with no-one wanting to take the risk to fund old school style games. Hopefully Atari will be the first to get the old band back together back and make another classic.
Also the websites source code mentions the Infinity Engine which was the original engine.

The actual art from BG2 being used in the teaser plus the actual theme, and in the comments on the website's code talking about the Infinity Engine leads me to think this will be a port of the game to something and iOS seems to be where all the kids are buying stuff these days.
This. Besides, since Atari acquired the rights of BG, they released those heavily bugged discount BG1+2+expansions packages. They'll have to work hard to gain my trust. Hell I even had the sound and the subtitles in two different languages.
It's only reasonable to assume that they're just after the quick buck, but man... I *do* want to slice brand new villains with the help of my miniature giant space hamster.

The Baldurs Gate series remain a nostalgia and childhood favorite of all time game series for me. There is a reason Bioware do not make even close to the great games they once did, all the great developers and writers left Bioware to go elsewhere.
Considering todays Bioware with straight up average and bad titles like Dragons Age 2 and Mass Effect 3, I most certainly do not want them to go ahead and make a third Baldurs Gate and ruin what is considered one of the best RPG series ever made.
If its a port or whatever then thats alright. Bioware don't own the BG license and never have. Black Isle did, which was Interplay's RPG division, they sold it to Atari after they closed Black Isle and laid everyone off. If it's a new title it would 99% be made by Obsidian (who are ex Black Isle)
Obsidian are working on a Wheel of Time game. They don't have the staff to double develop a title like BG3.

There goes another one...

Well, considering Atari said they would most likely continue production of BG3 in 2010 and used the terms "very special announcement", we can only hope ^^

I'd actually rather have a re-release of BG2 than BG3. I have no expectations for a company to recreate the quality of the series on their own.

Yeah, I would be happy with this too. Hell, even if they (god forbid) made it 3D I would be content.

I'd actually love to have BG1 re-released with more content and new graphics (TOTSC felt a little lacking to me) similar to BGtutu

I just...can't see this being what it needs to. I don't see where they can go with the series now, seeing as Charname either relinquished their power entirely or ascended. What's the plot going to be? Run around smashing gods from opposing pantheons?
I don't actually want to be cynical about this, but given that the series has wrapped itself up already it seems like Atari is taking a queue from movie publishers and reaching into that pile in the back labeled "Classics", chopping it up into it's least offensive bits, eating it, then shitting it out into a store near you.

I want to believe.

It might be interesting for people to note that there is some html content that is commented out. This is what it says
Before the <head> tag: <!-- February 28, 2012 --> <!-- Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine --> <!-- For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. --> <!-- And then... it returned. Better than it was before. --> <!-- Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah... patience would reveal it all. -->
At the end, after the last </html> tag: <!-- As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does life. -->
