As far as I read it's just something they wanna test in the beta, it's not settled yet. I could very well imagine this change won't make it.

So ... you can't take damage on Energy Shield anymore? It will just be added as 2nd mana pool and neglected for damage calculations?

Felt mandatory because of the lack of viable alternatives for those builds.. That's kind of a flaw in the structure of the game and not on EB... Though the change has merits if they shift other things around to compensate.

The issue with the change right now is that your mana regeneration is shattered and getting reaver or oath has an enormous down side to it I don't think you'll be able to really afford. I think you'd just die... Alot.

I really think at its heart it's energy shield that's the real problem. It just feels like... Well a bad mechanic.
Python is garbage, number 1 advocate of getting rid of it.

That sounds interesting but having a trait where it switched it to mana / hp would be better than just outright changing it.

More like trying to make it more interesting than it is now where it's basically a no-brainer for any caster build that isn't CI or LL, which I personally welcome.

On the one hand I dislike the change because it was so good for casters, but then the fact that it is basically mandatory is reason enough to rework it I think. However I don't think its current form is going to work out well, because using ES to cast skills will prevent the ES from regening. So assuming ppl use close to 100% of the mana pool on auras, therefor forgoing clarity, and having no way to regen your "skill mana" (ES/what small mana you have left), its gonna be real shit after you caste your skill a couple times and then have no es left so you gotta run around till it regens to full.

EDIT: Well, like was said earlier, now you have to go ghost reaver and LL with EB, but that seems gimpy on a lot of builds. for example summoners cant leech back the ES. And you have to lose a gem link to LL (though I guess that would make caster builds more in like with melee builds where you pretty much have to have some sort of LL in melee setup instead of just using all dmg/utility like every caster currently can).

I think the new change would actually be a lot cooler and less of an effective deletion of the keystone if they did what someone suggested on the official forums and made it so that mana was drained before the Energy Shield pool.

It would then allow the cool new ideas (like 100% mana reservation + Ghost Reaver) and make it work kind of like an actual Eldritch Battery that builds up charge as long as you're using your regular mana. It would also interact a lot better with MoM without being nearly as efficient as it is now (though I still contest people's belief that it's actually much much better (or even "strictly better" according to some) than life/ES).

Edit: On a side note, the fact that actual human beings are suggesting people try things like running Blood Magic + EB + MoM to make their ES even less effective blows my mind.

EB change is not that bad. It's actually kinda what should have been in the first place.
My initial thoughts were not that good since Rory said it's not gonna work with MoM, but Mark said it actually will. So yeah, not that bad.

At the moment auras reduce your effective HP when you go MoM. Can't really run many auras because you need to leave a really big unreserved mana pool, atleast 30% of your life to be exact. But with this new changes you'll be able to use all your mana, running discipline etc, and have like 2-3K ES easily. Then all you need to do is find a way to recharge/regen it quickly, like Zealot's Oath or Shav ring.

EB is not a free lvl20 AA anymore.

Running new EB+MoM is effectively turning your Energy Shield from something that has 50% chance to avoid stun and absorbs 100% of damage before it's applied to Life (except for chaos) into something that absorbs 30% of damage before it's applied to life. You really, really need to benefit from 100% mana reservation for that to be optimal (though not having to run BM gems is indeed quite helpful).

Edit: It does also change it from something that regenerates when you aren't taking damage into something that regenerates when you aren't dealing damage, which can also be helpful I suppose.

Welp. Looks like there's no large-scale 1-weeks/1-months, or they haven't planned them out yet. That and the number of "things to do" makes me think that 6-8 week duration beta is not going to happen; I wouldn't be surprised at 3 months.

On the bright side, they're turning Ondar's Guile into an actual keystone instead of just a brokenly good node.

I mean a passive with a positive aspect and a negative aspect (which is what keystones are supposed to be). It's still probably better than Avatar of Fire: nothing beats spending a passive to remove all your gear and tree leech, deal less damage, and require curses and an additional gem socket to handle fire resist mobs when it comes to uselessness. Especially if prolif is getting the bat.

Edit: I have a sudden schizoid hope that GGG further revises Ondar's to be 40% additional chance to evade versus projectiles instead of 40% more and it because the next best combo with IR.

Wow, I wonder how they wanna balance Freezing Pulse or Flame Totem without shotgunning. They'd need to buff the dmg a LOT I guess. Well, GMP maps now are gonna be much less deadly maybe. From reading I like some changes, but definitely not all.

That unique looks TERRIBLE to me.
