People seemed pretty split on pierce vs chain last league. I find Ricochet to just be better QOL for clearing and bow builds are overwhelmingly mappers, so I'd much rather put my eggs in the QOL basket. I'm not a fan of far shot or point blank when running VC.

I expect VC to be changed or removed in the upcoming patch. One of the new supports gives return with a hefty damage penalty on the return, so that might be their replacement.

thanks for the input. Far Shot was definitely more damage if you aim things right, but Ricochet felt a lot better, especially when just randomly mapping. Any time I'm indoors it helped a lot.

So yea I think Ricochet is better (I also have Pierce from tree)

If this get slaps with 70% less damage on returning projectiles, its a huge nerf, but I think the build is still good

Good I didn't have high hopes for a lot of changes this league. Without the Ruthless stuff, not much changed. A new league mechanic, a couple Atlas passives, some new support gems, a few melee ignite buffs (lol) and some nerfs like temp chains and Delirium. Really not a lot of stufff, the gem changes are giga disappointing.

I'm again disappointed with the balance changes. If PoE1 and PoE2 are going to be different games and PoE isn't going to transition to PoE2 why they keep the game stagnated? They barely have made balance changes in almost two years.

real missed opportunity. I'm guessing they were busy with Exilecon, but having a hype league right now would have been great timing. hopefully the league mechanic is exciting. Crucible was incredibly powerful, but I was not a fan of the mechanics.

going to be trying out HC SSF. I'm tempted by the whole no perma death on league mechanic part.

Eh, I feel balance is overall in a pretty good place; league concept seems fun and new support gems and the new Atlas keystones are interesting (wish patch notes would specify what e.g. the new Guardian minions are or what Wakened Fury from the new Meat Shield support does). Still lots of thing I haven't tried - maybe this is the league I finally play a Deadeye (Icicle Mine?) or a Necro (popcorn SRS?).

Agree and disagree. The 2 things that were completely over the top got gutted, which is good (vernegant cascade, totem explode). That should alone make the meta different.

There are still skills that outshine others where people were hopeful these other skills would get some buffs like they did in the past (by now the last time they did that is probably 2 years ago).

I'm not sure what to think about the support gems. Trauma Support will likely not see much play as Boneshatter already has it and does AoE too. So while another gem can use it, they won't get the AoE and need a support gem. I'll predict something like Double Strike with Trauma will be massively worse than Boneshatter. There will probably be a support gem that sees some play, but I think most won't be hugely popular. Quin will probably do some trashy Ice Crash Elementalist (no idea, just guessing) again so that alone should make some people try the new melee Ignite potential with the new support gems.

It does, and it doesn't need balance patches. But balance patches help the game stay popular. The game is already over 10 years old and there are people that have been there since the start and played pretty much every season (I'd say I played 80-90% of them). And to those, shake ups are generally considered good since they make it hard to grasp what will be good to play next league and that's fun (IMO).

I have no doubt this next league will be popular regardless, with potentially a lot of players from D4 trying it. Still, having the popular streamers enjoy the league can only be positive and those are usually long time players.

They didn't touch Bloodnotch/Immutable Force at all, so near-invulnerability is still pretty free for all the builds that can use it.

I've been marinating on the Chieftain/Guardian changes and looking around for ideas people have come up with. There's still some wait and see on the Guardian summons, but overall I think they're both huge whiffs.

The ascendant changes for Guardian and Chieftain both look god awful. Chieftain is a contender for worst Ascendant notable now.
It now provides "Totems Taunt Enemies around them for 2 seconds when Summoned", "Unaffected by Ignite" and "10% increased Strength."

When am I ever taking this? It's basically now exclusively for strength stacking, but still overwhelmingly worse than the previous node (which already had 10% strength, plus damage, regen, and Ash on hit).

Similarly, Guardian Ascendant lost reduced curse effect, fat ally PDR, ally onslaught, and shared charges for life regen & recovery and small amounts of conditional ally block/spell block. It's so much worse.

FWIW, I do like changes that nerf party play since it's far too strong right now and I do like the big exp nerfs to legion 5-ways, but I expect they'll still be far and away better exp than actually playing the game.

I wish they'd just give Tormented Spirits the Perandus treatment and take them on a short walk to behind the shed.

The maps in the atlas this league generally seem worse than 3.21, but somehow Crimson Temple is still in the pool for the nth league in a row. Crimson Township and Defiled Cathedral have both already been rotated out 2+ times in the same span.

The new supports are mostly a letdown for me.

  • Controlled Blaze - Maybe there's something here, but feels pretty niche.
  • Corrupting Cry - Again feels pretty niche.
  • Trauma - Probably going to be some self-chill shenanigans with this one, but it's not really my cup of tea.
  • Volatility - Bleed boon maybe? Feels like another Ryslatha's Coil more or less.
  • Flamewood - I don't like totems.
  • Guardian's Blessing - It seems like an OK skill, but again niche.
  • Returning Projectiles - This one I think has the 70% less damage penalty with it, but the text in the patch notes doesn't specify attacks like Vengeant Cascade did, so there might be something interesting here for spells.
  • Sadism - Number dependent, but could be interesting.
  • Locus Mine - I hate mines.
  • Frigid Bonds - Also links.
  • Fresh Meat - Just not interested in minion builds these days.
  • Devour - Poor man's Polymath? Could be good for mapping if the numbers are decent.
  • Spellblade - I'm not seeing how I'd ever make this good. Most caster weapons are +1-2 levels and fat % damage. For elemental it tends to be +1, % damage, and flat damage due to the mod pool (which is worse, but you gotta do what's feasible). You need at least two prefixes to scale phys damage high, which means at best you'd do something like percent and flat phys with +1 spell level.

    Are the numbers really going to be so high on the gem that this is better than a typical caster weapon? Seems hard to believe. The other thought would be some unique item, but I'm not aware of a one-hander that'd fit here. If this is only ever good with obscure unique items why have it as a gem at all. It seems like they really want to push battlemage, but the other pieces for it don't exist. I dunno, I'm just not seeing it right now.

I would really like to play a Bleed Glad, it's been so long. If the bleed stuff is good, maybe it could finally deal average damage. Explosions with Bleed Glad were so fun in the past.

2h Melee Puncture for the max damage? Sure, clunky maybe, but the clear should still be quite ok with the bleed explosions.

I think the last Bleed build I played to the end game was Cyclone Glad with Crimson Dance... But that's definitely 5+ years ago.

No I was thinking more of the Snipe bow version which is clunky because of the channeling.

My last bleed builds were bleed glad sst in expedition & scourge. It's OK still, but on the lower side of damage (~2 mil with ramp) and block is in a weak spot right now. Pops notwithstanding, the cold version just feels better.

Oh yeah that is another level of clunky. Might be more dps than 2h Melee build, but idk as it doesn't have the Ruthless support.

I actually tried leveling with Snipe + Puncture once. Needless to say I couldn't stomach it long and never got to the point of trying it again. That char got deleted somewhere in the 50s.

Everything depends on numbers, but many of the supports seem like they would work out.

Trauma is really dam good in general. Not sure if anything will beat Boneshatter overall, but that's weak at bossing. You could use a Boneshatter build, gem swap Trauma + Heavy Strike or whatever for bossing

Volatility will be very good. Just need high attack speed. the higher max lower min setups are almost always big net gain dps.

Flamewood seems like it will be hilarious, totems shooting mortars? I'm tempted to try it just for fun.

Guardian Blessing seems like a decent alternative to Divine Blessing. "Supported Aura Skills have no Reservation" means it could be cheaper. Stick it on a golem and you also get the golem effect.

Sadism seems like it could be great for ignite/bleed.

Sacrifice is probably OP in some setup. Get some OP recovery setup (like PF flask impending doom or the stun thing), forbidden rite, get tons of damage

Devour seems unncessarily restrictive, only killing blows? I wish it could just eat corpses after X number of hits or something, then you could use it for boss sustain


Overall I bet Trauma, Guardian Blessing, Volatility, Sadism will be instantly useful, assuming the numbers aren't complete ass.
