It's sort of how someone gradually picks up sc2 terminology over time.
There's not too much chess terminology. And usually you can use their aspect without actually 'naming' them or knowing their names.
As for opening names. It still puzzles me when I play an opening line that I have been using for almost a decade, I have preparation on it going 20-25 or even 30 moves deep and then someone comes along and names it. And some of those names... Almost like 'the lame dog screwed the half-legged cat opening' etc... I just don't learn the name. Yes I will know the main lines' name - but mostly it just rubbed off on me from others.

There's not much similarity between the two. I wouldn't even say micro skills. I wouldn't even call bullet chess. It's mostly about getting lucky advantages from pre-moves and then when you barely have more time left mucking up your opponent with premoves like saccing everything you have to block his premoves, etc.
It's like blindfight. If you have an empathy for it you do it better. It could be beautiful if two great blindfighter do it. Or it can be a horrible lolfest.
Sometimes it is enough to end a game properly, though - but even then mostly you just get there from the lucky premoves.

Okay people, I'm adding the names to the roster that hasn't PMed me or stated in their post their will to sign up and then I'll disclose the verdict.

Alright. It looks that e4 won it. I wasn't that surprise, but I thought it might be a little closer.
e4 always was about 10 or more votes ahead of d4, it climbed to a 14 advantage twice.
Now it's on me. Again if you have any questions or remarks, feel free to PM me or post here.
As an interesting note, only around 20-25 of the 91 signed up people didn't make their first vote. I would call that a good ratio. I fully expect around 10 people to fall out and the other dozen can easily happen because of the earlier start.
Don't be discouraged if you are among them - there's still a lot of fun to have!
Edit: Oh by the way, I already have other events in mind for later this semester.

I'm hoping it's a live cast of Chess Boxing.

DONT PLAY SICILIAN DEFENSE AGAINST US
But yeah, play whatever. :p

I want to know more about you ng5. Where are you from/live? + Show Spoiler + (I think you are dutch or scandinavian.) What do you do? + Show Spoiler +(You are in IT or a student/clerical worker in law) What is your chess background? and why do you think you can face all of tl! :D Eitherway, this is a great happenstance and I'm glad you're making it happen.
Since we chose e4: Here's an interesting game...... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasparov_versus_the_World

I think you will realize when I'll start streaming again. Goes to show how people forget me after a year of silence, eh?
In all seriousness - I don't like talking about myself. I'm open to talk about whatever anytime, but I still think that people should be able to make up their own mind about me on their own.
You can check this out, though. It's a nice small game, if not too deep.
We could have a big streaming-event when it is all over where I read the comments one-by-one from the starting moves and reply to everything. Would probably take close to (but likely more than) 6 hours, but I think it could be a lot of fun.
The rest will be answered in time. Let the curiosity haunt your nightmares for a while.

Here's to the French Defense! I've always played that as black. It will be interesting to play it from white's perspective.

Can't wait to hear Ng5's move and let the discussions begin anew!

It would expect black to play the Sicilian or French. It would be pretty interesting if Ng5 plays the Alekhine defense against us since he seems pretty fond of it judging by his last post. Or he could very well surprise us with something like the Scandinavian (center counter). Can't wait for his choice.

What a brave opening by TL

I hope it's not too late to sign up, as I'd love to take part in this. Great idea for a thread and GL Ng5, you're gonna need it! :D

That's like saying that Starcraft's just about getting lucky from build orders and hoping to attack someone when they're looking at something else. Bullet and Starcraft are much more similar than a longer game and Starcraft. Bullet is mostly about being able to think and move extremely quickly, as is Starcraft.

Have you watched some of the best bullet players playing bullet for hundreds of hours total?
Edit: There's no similarty between the two, please stop trying to make chess and StarCraft similar. They are as similar as any other two games. Or as music and chess is. Or the way soldiers are in sharp war situations. The thinking process, the training, the mechanical learning can be the same and you have to answer the same basic questions - if you do it on a high enough levels. But that doesn't make the two games more similar than them and anything else.
Just watch enough GM/IM 1-minute bullet and you'll see how what I say is true. Dishing out a 15-20 moves opening withing 5 secs with premoves is just that - getting lucky with premoves. You can't count how many games is won on counting on the premove in that opening and making something completely stupid, but the opponent premoves what you expect - without exploiting your stupid move - and you win. Or they take the time to realize and exploit it and you still have chances because you're still in your flow and a little bit up on time.
The rest 50 seconds is enough to win a position if it's not closed, not overly complicated (including not having overly many pieces left), which is rarely the case and opens the way up for much more premove errors. It's as much about empathy as anything else - say skill.
And when you only have ten seconds to move but there's enough pieces the opponent will just own you by giving check or blocking your premoves in any way they can see. Even if you have two queens you can only move them small distance at a time, or you just flag.
No matter how quick you think, that time is rarely enough to win a proper game. The only difference is if someone already screwed up - then the experienced, or better opponent can beat them easier and make the time 'more enough' for themselves.
I'm not badmouthing bullet. It can be great if you like it. I did play it more a while ago and there's still some friends I play it with (but I mostly stick to other variants for bullet.) But I won't say it's not what it actually is. It doesn't mean you can't have fun or can't like it and I don't say people who only play bullet suck.
Just because I would say a lot of similar things to chess students that Day9 would tell your average player wanting to improve doesn't make them similar in practice. It makes the thinking and improving similar in theory. There's a fine line. Because if you don't have a certain way of thinking you won't draw the similar lines, or will draw the wrong ones.

omg...the French would get so dirty... :x Should hope for a sharp game

Just read that wikipedia article about Kasparov vs the world, crazy that he won, even if he was reading their message board.

French is tempting. So is playing 1... c6 to make everyone excited about a Caro and following it up with 2... d6 just for the kicks.

New move is posted. You have three whole days and six hours to elaborate again.
If you would like to hear my reason behind choosing the opening I can elaborate along with my next move, or I can elaborate after game during game analysis.
Keep up the enthusiasm!

Edit: I would like a better option to alarm everyone when I make a move as I cannot send PMs to multiple recipients, but if you keep checking it you should be fine as there always will be three full days for you - and also as the game adavances I will probably settle to using the same timeframe of 2-3 days in general.
