In a chronological order you could say:

Crusaders Kings --> Europa Universalis --> Victoria --> Hearts of Iron

Awesome! Thanks.
Had a great time playing with you by the way

Are all games in the series good, or should I just go for the latest?

Dunno about CK series, I never played CK original but I've been following CK2 and it looks really good so I will try it out (comes out in like 2 weeks I believe).

Victoria was my first and Victoria 2 is really good. But Vicky series is more economic and about factory/population management than Europa which puts more emphasis on military and conquest than Vicky does so it does have tradeoffs.

HOI2&3 are pretty fun too, but it pretty much takes the military to the far extreme and the entire game is just one big war with huge emphasis on military management of forces (WW2) and I could really only enjoy it when I played Germany.

EU3 I played last, but it ended up being my favorite of the 3 I played (Vicky/HOI/EU series).

Hoping CK2 is as good as it looks though cause I've heard the CK series is great and I'll be playing a ton of CK2 if it is as good as people say it will be. It's just really impressive how they've designed four completely unique outlooks on the grand strategy genre because each one definitely has a distinct flavor from the others while still being a grand strategy game with the same generic formulas.

But ya we should do a TL multiplayer game again sometime in EU3 =D

Well, it depends.

Crusader Kings (and hopefully Crusader Kings 2) is far more small scale than you may be used to. Lords, Barons, Dukes, and all that. You're basically trying to become king, if you opt to start that low in the chain. It's less about conquering the world, and more about keeping the areas under your influence happy and making your vassals fight for you.

EU3 I'm sure you know plenty about.

Vicky 2 is the Industrial Revolution, essentially. It's the best next step for an EU3 player, because it has a lot that you will be familiar with and a lot you aren't. Lots of huge, HUGE stacks. Larger nations, so on and so forth. The main thing with Vicky 2 is economy and production, moreso than conquering. You have different types of citizens, ranging from Aristocrats, to Capitalists, to Laborers and all that. You need to keep them all happy, manage taxes for all of them, manage what factories are built or what they are producing (unless you go Laissez-Faire or other forms of economy, where certain amounts of automation is given). Building railroads, and all that jazz. Diplomatic and economical boom, basically. Also, it's not so much taking out a castle but more of occupying a province. Different units have different speeds, both traveling and occupation.

Hearts of Iron is straight up combat. Now, supposedly HoI3 is decent now with a few expansions and patches that finally allow multi-threading. I dont know, haven't tried it out yet. Nonetheless, HoI2/Darkest Hour (preferably the latter) are fantastic replacements for HoI3. Pick what you want though, I hear HoI3 is actually pretty fucking good now. Nonetheless, as I said before, it's basically straight combat. You can't really break the historical norm to the level of EU3. I mean yeah, you can get Nazi Spain invading America if you try hard enough, but it mostly stays historically accurate. However, the combat is fucking intense. Maneuvering through certain terrains, controlling troop numbers, keeping troops supplied and fed, using paratroopers, submarine warfare, airstrikes, so on and so forth. Oh yeah, supplying troops with goods and shit like that is also in Vicky 2, and to an extent, the citizens as well in Vicky 2.

In order of difficulty, I'd put it EU3 < Vicky 2 < Hearts of Iron/Darkest Hour and CK2. Both are hard in their own way.

Thanks for the quick answers! TL never seizes to surprise me.
I guess I'll just plough through all of them
Crusader kings looks like the most promising to me, but I think I'll just wait a couple of days for the next game in the series to come out.

I'd play the first one, honestly.

Paradox releases, at least for Grand Strategy, are notoriously shit.

Divine Wind is the, what, third expansion for EU3? The actual release of the games themselves are notoriously shit, though.

So I formed Arabia and crushed Persia. I am currently a regional superpower and just finished westernizing so I can stand toe to toe with the europeans. Also I conquered Naples and Vassalized the pope.

Rome is now Sunni.

Feels good.

The only thing that can stop me at this point is Austria, or a cross europe alliance. I'm keeping my infamy low though and keeping a good eye on alliances and guarantees in order to stay alive until I'm too big to handle. So it's pretty much european mop-up from now on.

Oh, and Konstantinoples has maxed out on population at 999999.

Yeah. They slow down teching, and don't provide much help to the empire really. Releasing them as vassals is usually a good idea, unless you just want a world wide empire.
Taxes can increase like crazy though somehow though. I recall once that to my surprise the canary islands had the like the second highest tax in all of my French empire ^_^

It's interesting how long the golden horde survives with the new version of D&T. They sometimes keep on trucking all the way to the end.

Well, I needed most of those provinces to make Jagiellon and they got no cores but mine so I can't really release them

About The Golden Horde, this is 4.3 of D&T there is a newer version, 4.4 that have adressed some of the Golden Horde issues with giving them slightly lower force limits and some higher revolt risks

I never understand how people ever had issues with the Golden Horde.

They're overpowered as fuck if you yourself play them, but if it's AI, you just need to survive for ~50 years and you win.

Also, when I first formed Jagiellon, I went from 20 ducats a year to 800 ducats a year. The fuck you talking about "poor" provinces lol

curse my laziness then. But really I enjoyed Crusader Kings I its completely different from the rest of the games. You cant build troops and its more family management. Having your 4kingdom + almost all of europe family die out just cause some lazy fatass doesnt get his wife pregnant is epic.

I'd definitely encourage everyone who plays DW to get the Death & Taxes mod, if it hasn't already been mentioned somewhere in this thread. It's basically DW, but with a map that looks somewhere in the region of 1000% better, better sliders, decisions, ideas, longer, more historically accurate countries and history, improved Aztecs and Incans, and a better game in general.

Do note, D&T is inherently easier than Vanilla. However, once you reach a certain point of knowledge of the game -- it stops being "difficult" all around no matter what, so D&T is an awesome mod if you know your shit to fuck around with and add some interesting gameplay mechanics to keep the game fresh.

Has anyone tried playing golden horde in D&T? I'm curious about their 'new king' events, where you get like 20.000 revolt risk normally. Somehow the horde seems to do just fine, and tend to live on throughout the entire game unless you meddle with them.

I havnt really played Vicky since its release. I heard its decent now with the expansion etc.

For HoI3 to be playable you need at least Semper Fi. With FtM its actually a really good game and the Common wepaons of WW2 mod makes it even more awsome. Its not for the faint of heart it requires huge ammounts of micro management. More than any other paradox game Id say. Yet, if you take your time and learn the game Im sure youre going to enjoy it a lot. One of the best titles out there imo.
