There are four versions of SF4, in chronological order: Vanilla, Super, Arcade Edition, and AE 2012. Vanilla, Super, and AE are standalone games, and AE 2012 is a free balance patch for AE. Each newer version adds new characters and balance changes, so you should get Arcade Edition if you can.

![]() You shouldn't bother with anything but getting the latest version as the older versions are pretty much abandoned player-wise.

There's no point really starting with Vanilla SF4 as some characters had some changes going to SSF4. (i.e. Guile's charge time decreased to 1 sec. from 2 sec.) But yeah, you could find the latest disc (Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition) on Amazon for around $30, (Orig. price $40 I think) and with the latest update (AE 2012) the game is probably the most balanced of the versions compared to its two previous iterations, so you could go crazy with most of the cast.

I don't have a purchase account for Xsplit so I can't test the GameSource function, but maybe that would work better? It works well (under the settings I'm using) but in-game, I'm not hitting the 60fps (close to it, maybe 55?) so using game source on SF4 does take its toll :\ I'm using an i5-2500k so it's decent. You're using an i7 right? I think you'll fare better then I do. I'm trying to get DXTory to work with SF4 but it won't show up. period.

Check out this video tutorial series. The challenge/trial mode is ok for learning basic execution, keep in mind that the trial mode is an older version of the game so some of the combos cant be done in ae. check out the shoryuken.com character specific forum for your character, keep in mind that most of the stuff there are usually quite advanced though. this page explains the basic terminology used within fighting games if you get confused by some of the words.

Although if you're really keen on using pad of whatever choice you want, go for it. A lot of poeple tend to use arcade sticks over pad controllers but that doesn't mean pad is obsolete. Work on what you have and you can go pretty far. I'm a stick player in street fighter 4 but when it comes to Tekken, I play MUCH MUCH more superior on pad due to +6 years of like pad experience versus an arcade stick for me. Or look at Fanatiq in UMVC3. motherfucker uses a 360 pad (WHICH IS REGARDED TO BE GARBAGE BY MANY) but he made it work. Just a thought. -- Gameplay wise, if you're really new just learn the basics and the fundamentals: Movement -Forward and Backward movement -Forward/Back Dash -Jumps Attacks: -normal moves -unique moves -special moves -EX moves -ultra & supers. throw and command throw Defense: -Difference between blocking high and low -Crossover defense (when an attack hits you from behind instead of front). -Throw break (tech is another word for throw break.) Mechanics: -Meter -Super/Ultra meter -Focus Attack -Damage scale. http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2009/may/09/how-combo-and-damage-scaling-works-street-fighter-iv/ This is basically what you should know. Most of it is incredibly easy to learn so don't feel pressured. Plus, my advice is to just pick a character (ibuki for this case) and just fuck around. Explore. Learn. In training mode. If you're looking for guides on how to play better and whatnot, that's fine we can help you with that but again, imho you get more if you play around with most of the characters until you get that "oh I like this guy" and stick with it.
