i havent played the game for around two or so years, when was the change made enabling people to respec?

there may be some skill in pvm on any game(speed runs and what not) but leveling to 99 definitely has little to do with skill, and more to do with time. it takes around 6,000 2 minute baal runs to just level from 98-99.

Expanding on this point.
When I made my last WWsin of 1.10 Ladder season 2, I was not "unbeatable" but I was at a point that 85% of the pub games I was in I would not die. As good as that was, there were 2 WWSins on USEast that not only were better than me, they cleaned the floor with me, not only in 1v1, but just as overall duelists.
The upper echelon in D2 was probably more untouchable than it currently is in SCII, and way more than in any other RPG I've played.

+1 this
some non-pvp players might not understand this tho let them believe what they wanted to

Obviously there's skill involved in Player versus Player. We're talking about leveling up to 99 here guys.
|
Well obviously for characters like WWsin, BvC etc there is a lot of skill involved. But in my humble opinion, the same cannot be said for a lot of character builds (hammerdin, sorc, smite, foher etc) as it just involves teleporting around and spamming spells. Although I never really pvped much so feel free to prove me wrong.

Leveling...as opposed to what? Leveling in other RPGs? Never seen an RPG where that was anything other than facerolling. PVM? Everyone's opinion of the PVM is clouded because they never do it properly. Just like how in WoW everyone doesn't appreciate how hard Vashj and Kael are. PvM encounters are supposed to be done at appropriate levels and gear levels. We are talking about taking on NM Duriel at ~ Lvl 35 in blues, Hell Chaos at lvl 55 while still wearing a Sigon's Shield and feeling pretty good that you actually have that.
But yea, talk about how easy D2 is while you stomp Baal runs next to the decked out Hammerdin Bot. That has nothing to do with PVM, if you are doing that you are just leveling for PVP anyways.

Some ppl claimed to beat hell in single player. As much as experiences as i have, i couldnt beat LoD with my Bowazon in HC mode, pretty much stuck in Act4 Hell iirc. try starting from scratch and see how far you can go.this game surely needed some skill to beat it by yourself all the way to Hell difficulty.

I register just to post here. Been lurker for long time.
Forget about D3 or cLoD. Play this instead, i can guarantee that you will be blown away.

The mod just release latest omega version. Might help you with your craving for d3.

MXL was a bit offputting for me, the skills and classes are so far different from regular d2 that it was hard for me to get into while trying to get back into d2 at all.
Plus i dont have a legit key anymore, so unable to play that online, sticking to RoS in the hopes it gets more populated, trying to work on some runewords now!

Hell can be completed single player with pretty much every build, it just takes a lot of patience :p
Used to belong to a single player community, the stuff you'd see there... Today it's just as much about what we used to call 'bnettish' behaviour; high rune finding and whatnot. A couple of months back I heard there was the first legit sp last wish, some of these guys play rather a lot. In 1.11 I made a self found enigma, so I suppose I'm not entirely clean in that respect either But anyways, there were and are still people who do the craziest stuff, like making naked guardians, doing the strangest builds (Psychic hammerdin?), just weird stuff... There have been a dozen or so sp 99ers, people did 100k AT or pit runs, I know a guy who found every item in the game twice, in HC.
It's still a great place to be, check it out if you've got the inclination but not the desire to put up with the mindless bnet hordes

Patch 1.13, little more than a year ago iirc. The great noob patch; HRs now drop like snowflakes in Switzerland, each den quest gives you a respec, all bosses drop tokes which can be cubed together into respec tokens. It also removed IM and LR. BAAAAAAAAAAAH!

have to agree here tho that it required a lot of patience but as certain weak classes and bad luck, sometimes you die.Especially places like Travincal temples, CS.
the part where "a guy who found every item in the game "twice", in "HC"... how long does it take him ? no offense but im considered myself a die hard Diablo player, its pretty hard to believe that he found all of them by himself.I know too "damn well" how hard" it is to find every single item in the game but i could be wronged if recent patches fixed some drop rates cuz im an old schooler.

Basically, he just plays a lot, and he's good at it. He got 3 characters (2 sorcs and an assassin) to level 99 in 1.10+, which equals about 5700 runs each just for those, runs Pindleskin for fun after I don't know how many years of playing, he once levelled a sorc till 96 on him.
Travincal is easy, CS too, because they are predictable. WSK can be hard if you run into a conviction gloam stair trap, or gloams and OKs (before they removed LR). Drop rates have been the same since 1.10, except for the 1.13 rune patch.
Check it out if you like, there's a lot of ex-bnetters having a ball there :p

I guess it depends on the definition of 'item'.
And 2 Zods, 2 Cham I find _very_ unlikely.
And I do agree, PvP is a form of art in Diablo2. I got to practice a lot on a private realm (Zykworld) with one guy who was fairly successful in a dueling league on the EU server. After our first two rounds he simply stated 'OK, now I know your movement patterns.' We were playing Ama vs. Ama, I think that matchup is a bit more volatile due to the huge range between min and maxdam, especially when criticals are applied.

Yea, Sin and Sorc are easy tho but for Bowazon your decoy, Valk and Merc are basically useless in CS plus the damn seals sometimes spawned mobs on you.
are you talking about lv.99 in single player ? also that "found all item, twice" too. thats just crazy amount of time put in there.Im sure it took over "3 full years of dedicated playing time" to do that in single player.Im guessing between 6 to 8years unless he uses the cheatcode to increases players/drop rates.

By patience you mean rely on your merc.
Don't even try to pretend otherwise. Its not possible to beat hell solo with a great many builds without letting Asif or Shizmal do his thing for 70% of the time.

i tried to recall where was i stuck in Act 4 Hell and if iirc, i couldnt kill Diablo.
His bone prison got me locked up and with inferior gear compared to Multiplayer i couldnt keep up with that at all.
Eventho i luckily found Buriza that made my life much much much more easier i still couldnt kill him (cant even brough him down to 70% life i think)
|
If you can get him to 70%, you can kill him too.
Yeah sure, some players play like Koreans play starcraft, I've also done tournaments where I ran baal 12+ hours a day for 9 days, I had about 25 chars lvl 90+ of which one 97, two 96, must have had about 60 pat/mat/guardians, all made by playing SP. I didn't pick up set items anymore because I had everything x5, I found all but 5 items (tyrael's, dw, astreon's, cham and zod), but then again I only did baal and almost no areas. I was considered a casual player. SP doesn't have accounts that expire, you can play for years and keep your items, in that respect it's just a non-ladder thing.
So pardon me if I sound boastful :p It's all wasted time in the end as there never was a golden mouse for playing d2, but whatever -what was my point again? Eh, perhaps that there are communities (AB, SPF) where people play legit and like soldiers :p

Depends on which builds you're talking about of course, potion throwing sins will of course have some issues :p But fire druids, summoning druids, melee sorcs, warcry barbs, bow barbs, throw barbs have been done, and while a mercenary is an integral part of the character you can't really rely on him/her to do everything. Most standard builds are rather doable, some melee builds requiring to find a nice weapon somewhere, but there are cube recipes (for savage polearms for example), which help immensely. Patience usually means separating monsters from groups and killing them one at a time.
Oh and pardon me being rather anal, I don't like being so but there is a lot of skill involved in d2 and it's not acquired by rushing chars, playing in groups and having duped gear :x If you're playing HC solo without any extra items, you'll need to find your own way, and while you'll probably die horribly on the first 5 tries, but after that you'll get more careful and find that way :p
