Nintendo's next-generation game console, the Nintendo NX is scheduled to enter mass production in early 2017, delaying about half a year from the company's original mass production plan in the mid-2016. Sources from the related upstream supply chain pointed out that the delay was because Nintendo wished to enhance the game console's video-game/handheld-game-integrated gaming experience and add virtual reality (VR) function into the system to gain advantages in the upcoming video game and mobile game competitions. The Nintendo NX will be assembled by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), but Foxconn declined to comment on matters concerning its clients or products. The sources pointed out that the Nintendo NX combines the video gaming experience with the mobile gaming experience. The device features a 5- to 7-inch display, controller and joystick for users to play as a mobile gaming product, but it is also able to connect to a TV for users to play as a video game system. Nintendo is now planning to add VR function to the device to satisfy the popular trend in the gaming market. Nintendo's smartphone games have received positive feedbacks from gamers. Since Nintendo's launch of its Miitomo, the number of player of the game has already surpassed 10 million, while Nintendo's Animal Crossing, which involved social activities, also sold over 20 million units on the company's 3DS system. The sources pointed out that the supply chain received Nintendo's notification to start developing mold for the Nintendo NX in the mid-2015 and was told that the system would enter mass production and launch in the mid-2016. However, Nintendo has recently given them a new mass production schedule and asked them to start mass producing some key components at the end of 2016. Nintendo's order volume for the game console has also been reduced. Nintendo originally planned to order 20 million units for the first year, but its shipment target is now only 9.5-10 million units. The sources believe the reduction was due to the fact that video game console market has been shrinking and concerns triggered by its Wii U's unsatisfactory shipment performance of two million units in 2015. Although Pegatron Technology has been aggressively looking to take some of the Nintendo NX orders from Foxconn, Nintendo still decided to give Foxconn over 40% of the orders, while the remaining is handled by Japan-based Misumi and Hosiden. Taiwan-based component suppliers for Nintendo NX include Foxconn Technology, Macronix International, Pixart Imaging and Delta Electronics. Source

A shroud of secrecy is ever present around Nintendo NX, but thanks to a stream of patents we have been able to continue speculating as to why the company continues to be so protective of their, we hope, unexpected idea. Now, another patent has surfaced. This was first filed in Japan on 26th December 2014, and then with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 3rd December 2015. It has now been openly published in the United States, meaning that we can pore over it for any hints. It specifically relates to the integration of two speakers and a vibrator within what could eventually be either a handheld or controller device, if the patent were ever used. Their positioning sees the sound directed at the player, while the vibration occurs “simultaneously” with the speakers. “A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a left speaker and a right speaker are provided in a left end portion and a right portion of the housing and in an inside of this housing,” the patent‘s abstract description reads. “Each speaker is arranged such that a vibration direction of a diaphragm becomes in a direction perpendicular to a plane surface of a display panel that is provided in the front of the housing. “Sound emission portions for emitting sounds from the speakers are formed in both end portions of the housing and on a side surface at near side of this side that the speakers are arranged. Therefore, sounds are emitted toward a side of a player who holds the information processing apparatus. A vibrator that is provided between the two speakers is driven simultaneously with the speakers or in a predetermined order.” Source

Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer. On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required. Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen. A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV. For more on the console's power, Digital Foundry has a deep-dive look at the chip Nintendo has chosen as the centrepiece of NX, according to numerous well-placed sources: Nvidia's powerful Tegra mobile processor. NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told us. Considering NX's basis as a handheld first and foremost, the choice may not come as too much of a surprise - although we have heard the suggestion Nintendo recommends a 32GB cartridge, which is small when considering the size of many modern games. Naturally, we expect digital game downloads will also be available. We were told Nintendo considered but then decided against making a system which supported digital downloads only. Due to the radical change in hardware design and internal technology, we've been told by one source that there are no plans for backwards compatibility. Another source said the system would run on a new operating system from Nintendo. It won't, contrary to some earlier rumours, simply run on Android. Inside the NX, as stated above, the system will harness Nvidia's powerful mobile processor Tegra. Graphical comparisons with current consoles are difficult due to the vastly different nature of the device - but once again we've heard Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity. Quite the opposite, it is sacrificing power to ensure it can squeeze all of this technology into a handheld, something which also tallies with earlier reports. Source

That said, it's hard to imagine carrying around something that is likely to cost probably at least $200-300 on the fly, to enjoy it the same way you would as if you were playing it on your couch. I personally hate playing my 3DS outside of my house or in public places. I can only imagine the rich kids whose parents bought them one, bring it to their schools and public places only for it to get stolen. Also, carrying it around here and there is really going to wear down the unit... not good for longevity.

Nintendo Co. delayed the release of a key accessory for the hit Pokemon Go game as the company posted a wider-than-projected loss amid weak demand for its Wii U consoles and a stronger yen. The net loss was 24.5 billion yen ($232 million) for the three months through June, the Kyoto-based company said in a statement Wednesday. That compares with the prediction for a 3.4 billion yen loss, the average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Nintendo kept its 35 billion yen profit outlook for the fiscal year, and its shares fell 10 percent in German trading. Nintendo’s struggle to find new buyers for its traditional consoles and handheld players has been overshadowed by the runaway success of Pokemon Go, released this month by developers it partly owns. Even though the company is trying to reinvent itself in mobile games, the uncertainty over how much it will benefit from the hit has whipsawed the company’s shares since the app’s launch. Compounding those struggles, the game’s developers announced just before the earnings release that Pokemon Go Plus, a clip-on accessory for the hit game, will go on sale in September instead of this week. “The market’s focus is shifting from the near-term earnings and toward Pokemon Go,” Tomoaki Kawasaki, an analyst at Iwai Cosmo Securities Co., said before the release. In a report last week, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co. estimated the Pokemon Go Plus accessory will generate 45 billion yen in sales and add 8.2 billion yen to Nintendo’s bottom line in the current fiscal year, based on its original sale date. The yen has rallied against the U.S. dollar, cutting the value of overseas sales. Nintendo which gets more than three-quarters of revenue abroad, kept its its yen forecast for the current fiscal year at 110 yen to the dollar and 125 yen per euro. The negative impact of the stronger currency was 35 billion yen, Nintendo said. The current fiscal year marks the biggest test yet to Nintendo’s ambitions in mobile gaming. After resisting smartphones for years, it plans to release five titles through March 2017, including two by the end of this year. Source
