Really looking forward to this. I'm sad I didn't know about the Tribes series back when it was at its peak.

Also, thanks to Uranium for letting me know Tribes 2 is still alive, I think I'll give it a shot.

Tribes is an amazing game especially at the competitive level. In pubs it can be pretty fun but the amount of coordination and teamwork that go into competitive play is insane. The only game that I've ever played with a similar skill cap is Starcraft (hence me only playing SC2 and T2 currently). While the game has simple rules: capture the enemy flag, the game can feel completely different based off the position you play.

There are so many positions such as flag defense (heavy armor and sit on the flag, blocking/killing people trying to fly by taking your flag, sort of like a goalie), capper (if you aren't going 300km/h+ you're going to get sniped / killed/ blocked, and finding ski paths that allow for this is a challenge on its own, not to mention 'winging it' on your way back home at that speed), light defense (kill incoming hostiles and chase cappers), heavy offense (base rape! take down those gens and they can't get armor/vehciles/turrets don't work). And thats just a start to some of the positions. Its pretty much impossible to become really good at all of them; they all require a ton of practice to be amazing at.

Watch the tribes legacy video and the T2 match in the OP and you'll see how insane this game can be. I can't wait for this game to come out; I haven't stopped playing this since the first time I saw it.

I actually never played tribes until I saw this thread, I'm basically an addict at this point. How a game can have such a simple concept and yet be so fun is beyond me.

Tribes 1 was one of my favorite games to date. I could play pub games for hours while attempting to play light defense as a HPB (high pinging bastard) back in the day. It was one of the few competitive games where everyone on the team had specific roles that mattered. People that enjoyed suiting up in heavy armor would attempt to disrupt the other team's generators. Others playing offense would perfect various ski routes or escort flag carriers back to the base.

The game was team driven, and that is why I enjoyed it so much. Suiciding (ctrl-k) was common and necessary for defenders needing a quick return to the base. At the end of a game of CTF scores could range from -10 to 35 (example). The only thing that mattered at the end of the game was being able to score that last capture. One of the most gratifying gaming experiences for me was being able to disc jump in an attempt to kill a flag carrier that is moving at blazing speeds, and being able to land that last chaingun bullet that would stop them dead in their tracks. /nerdoff

Oh btw in the official trailer there are two "easter eggs" I suppose you could call them. At 0:22/23 you can see shazbot etched into the armor and at 0:32 you can see a tribes 2 spinfusor being fired at a generator.

They still exist, check out Tribes Next. While there really is only 1 good server "Goon Haven", it has a player cap of 64 and everyday you can find games with 50+ people on the server.

With hours and hours and hours of 'calibration'; thousands of missed discs.

But when you do manage to be that good its amazing how much fun this game becomes. Especially when you're entire team can do that, and is facing another team just as good. So many clutch plays.

I'm definitely interested in joining/starting a liquid team in T:A, if were allowed to use that name!

They have a healthy rotation for basically being the only server. Its probably best that they don't have competitive maps rotating all the time otherwise all the vets are just going to destroy. When the 'bad' maps come out as you put them, I usually just mess around rather than play a position lol.

makes me cry to see rebel's katabatic isn't up anymore. used to spend days on that server T_T

on a side note, it brings tears of joy to my eyes to see so many team-liquid users are such tribes fans.

Is Hi-Rez a good Developer? I remember tribes from back in the day but I never played a game by Hi-Rez.
I always try to give a sensitive, reasoned answer. This is usually awkward, time consuming and pointless.

Mad nostalgia on that name drop. I used to play in that server under the name (V)ercury (yes thats an M lol I was 12-13 when that game came out).

I'm also suprised how many TL'ers were actually tribes fans. This makes me hopeful though, I'd love to see a liquid team in T:A, if were allowed to use the name.

I've been following the IP like a hawk for the past year ever since Instant Action took a hold of the IP. I'm glad it is out of their hands though; I think Hi-Rez is capable of understanding Tribes and what made it so amazing.

The development team has a lot of old tribes players, a few who played competitively as well. They also have a really strong connection with their community.

From what I've been reading so far, they are heading in the right direction. They're paying attention to the community, playing Tribes 1 and 2 to get a feel for how the game played, focusing a lot on getting skiing right etc.

Wow, I cannot believe how many people here are familiar with Tribes. I am a extreme veteran of the game (10+years, since the release in 98). Some people still do play, the game is definitely "dead" competition wise but there are still some die hard tribes fans who play in daily pickups and what not. I'm hoping for the best for Ascend, cause in my opinion, T2 and T:V should not be considered sequels to the original Tribes game.

I'm sorry if this is not allowed but I will post a link to an article written by a Tribes veteran who was able to capture the passion for the game, and why Tribes is a game that has yet to be rivaled.

http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=632559

Also, i'm very worried for the simple fact that if the designers believe this game can be played on XBOX, that they might not have any clue what tribes is about.

Playing Tribes 2 competitively was some of the most that I have ever had playing games. Tribes and Tribes 2 were SOOOOO far ahead of their time in terms of complexity. I'm not sure that a developer would make a game today that is as newb-unfriendly as Tribes. The learning curve was particularly brutal. The best players would absolutely destroy everyone else.

absolutely right, that really made people strive to get really good at the game because it was really frustrating to get crushed non stop.

Instant respawn, suit up and try again! Honestly it was seeing them play so amazingly well is what motivated me never give up and eventually hit that "freedom of movement / MA's" level.

Plus when you finally kill that dude that runs you over everytime you see him, you feel like a boss.

I feel tribes was a great game but Team Fortress Classic (HL1 mod) had the best most incredible team FPS gaming this world has ever seen. I was a 'pro' player in that game for 3-4 years. When TFC was a pinnacle CPL game there was nothing better.

What separated Tribes from the other FPS's for me was its complex movement system. The game was sooooo fast compared with other FPS's developed at the time. The only other games that come close are Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight (which played surprisingly similar to Tribes with the force speed and force jump) and Unreal Tournament (with the translocator and the dodging system implemented in UT2k3).
