For those that don't know, the scene is actually doing very well right now. Lots of teams scrimming, apc from the winning nasl team is now the community manager, we have a 2500$ tournament in the horizon, and there are more cash tourneys to follow.

Are the assault rifles still absolutely ridiculous in the hands of someone who knows how to use them? I remember playing arena and you couldn't even get near some of those guys.

Yep. Learn to use one or enjoy dying. Given that every single tribes game/clone ever has had dominant chaingun (even if you nerf the hell out of it) I doubt that will change.

So what is the competitive CTF mode now? Gonna try the game again after what? 9 months

It seems some of the changes have even gone in the right direction.
And how do I find pubs and pugs for that mode?

e. Would also appreciate a link if there are any possible tweaks to the settings.

The competitive CTF is still 7v7, with a 1 sen limit. PUG's are still relatively active, in the EU we are getting 1-5 a night. To find them go to playapug.com. Usually there are no PUB's for 7v7 active because it's simply to small a format for uncoordinated play.

If you are having fps trouble, I would suggest turning off dynamic lights (Found under: my documents-->games-->tribes ascend-->tribesgames-->config--->tribes). The option should but right under the huge bulk of TextureGroups. Just turn that to false. It should boost your fps a ton but it will make your map darker. Most competitive players like to play on low/minimal anyways because it gets rid of all the annoying bloom.

There is now a GOTY edition on steam. 30$ for the entire game with all unlocks (non-cosmetic ones), 20$ if you are a VIP (you need to buy it from their site for this deal). Could be a good deal for people who didn't want to farm as much as was needed for some of the items.

The smallest Gold package should be ~7$ iirc, so buying that to become VIP and then the 20$ goty edition seems to be a good idea for new players. Most other should have unlocked too many things already for this offer to make any sense.

I think I stopped playing when I got into Planetside2 beta.. and in hindsight I don't know why. This game is so much more fun

The reduced xp cost is great, too. I had pretty much all I wanted before, now I can just buy whatever to try it out.

So sad about tribes. It could have been an esport to really compete with the other big ones of SF/SC/LoL/Dota, but they just screwed the pooch so badly on their business model and the continual game marketing so badly they lost like 90% of their playerbase in only half a year or so. Now unless they basically go back to the drawing board and do a complete makeover they're just slowly going to slide into oblivion. And they, for some reason, didn't implement team rabbit 2 as an esports mode.

@tbone: one 2500 dollar tournament, hell, one 25000 dollar tournament does not make a healthy scene. There are virtual fishing games with a stronger scene than that. Once it gets to a monthly prizepool of 100,000 dollars we can call the game healthy. I really hope it gets there, but I don't see it happening. The releases for the game seem to be largely desperation moves at this point, the content schedule has dropped off to like a skin a month and a weapon (like an actual weapon, not just three versions of the same one) once every couple of months. That's not enough new content to keep the average gamer enthused. I dunno whether they've just moved all their staff off the project or they've decided to let it die slowly, but clearly the dev support for the game is based on the assumption that it is a failed project, not a potential winner.

I have played a lot of pubs recently on EU-Amsterdam and have only met one single guy who was obviously hacking. Most people seem to be legit.

I never saw an esports future in this game to be honest.. the few "good" teams were never really serious about it. Spectating sucked ass, weren't really any good commentators and most of all the strategical skill-cap seems very low in CTF. I could imagine TDM/Duel with first-person spectating might work, but that's never gonna happen.

Still a fantastic game, the gunplay and movement is so damn refreshing after Planetside2 "combat".

e-sports side never got a chance, milking money was always the nr.1 priority. Not making a fun or dynamic game. There's been some patches to "fix" stuff but it's a fraction of the effort that was needed. Such a shame because for a little while the community seemed really passionate for me. This was just around the time when the patches introduced were mainly new, op weapons for the infiltrator and raider. I'm pretty sure the crazy xp prizes for better loadouts turned away a lot of people, because, well, that just makes the game look p2w. I remember playing 2-3 hours every day for like two weeks to get enough xp to unlock falcon for the sentinel. One. Fucking. Gun.
The mainframe of the game is really good IMO, with a few observer tweaks I think you could make it really easily a spectator game. At the same time with all the new content a lot of stuff is broken, throughout many patches a lot of menu stuff, and ingame stuff has been broken and buggy for me. I don't know if hiRez was forced to run the game like they have, but I do know it's a shame, because I think a real success wouldn't have been far but now it just has to be too late. It might have a small passionate competitive side, but I doubt that helps at this point because the interest is just too small to have any tournament pick it up. Unless, this one time draws a lot of people to it. What it really looks like is:"No more content developed, company turns its interest into smite which seems to be turning some MOBA people's heads"

I still feel like playing it every now and then because it can make fun scenarios happen and the CTF has some meaningful objectives, unlike any other FPS game that comes to mind. But again, surely the pubs turn a lot of people away because the grindy element turns 98% of pubs to complete shit.

Anyone who plays on a high level gets accused of hacking because they low levels haven't seen anyone good play. They just see that someone is incomprehensibly better than them, and conclude its hacking. I regularly get accused of hacking when sniping/chaining.

yeah, Aimbotting is actually rather difficult in tribes, because traditional aimbots only work with a few weapons, which are generally out competed by a good player with a projectile gun. My proudest moment was when two separate players in the same game accused me of hacking while I was only using a spinfusor XD. I got a double blueplate off one shot in the same game. That was a good game.
