I'd play Doombringer if it wasn't for the fact that mines(which are kinda essential to defending, especially compared to a fuckin frag grenade..) cost 75k experience(??? that's like 1 month of grinding), and of course the missile launcher which is colossally boring and useless. I'll just stick to my technician for the moment, I find him very useful for being around generators and stuff.
Also, fuck fractal grenades.
That ludicrous, I didn't know that was the cost. I spent ages grinding the 18K to unlock the raider, nevermind 75K to use an essential ability of a defensive class.
This game is not free to play.
World of Warcraft - now free to play! (but you can only play a male orc warrior in tanking spec with no shield)
Well what do you expect!? You want a company to give you a commercial grade videogame for free? These people are not doing voluntary work, they need to pay their mortgage and buy food just like you an me.
You CAN play the game without paying them, and you'll have access to a good portion of it without really needing to grind but if you DO like the game, you can contribute a small amount of cash to their cause.
I payed 10$, that's the price of two beers at a bar in my city. Or the price of 3 and 1/2 bus tickets. Or the price of a meal at most fast food restaurants.
In other words, it's Not the end of the world. I'm glad I could contribute to their cause because they are doing a hell of a job and I got much more than 10$ worth of enjoyment out of T:A.
I totally get what you're saying and I agree. I wouldn't feel aggrieved paying £20+ for a decent multiplayer only game like this.
I just feel like it's marketed in a really horrible way - the game isn't free to play. 10% of the game is free to play. AKA, it's a demo. A free demo. Oh nice one, really revolutionary, not like that hasn't been done for 20 years.
But yeah, don't take that as me saying the game isn't worth anything, it's a great game!
If you focus on one Class and play 2h a day, you will soon have it upgraded pretty far. Then you might miss the choice of weapons, however you can still own hardcore and be good, have fun and kill newbz.
It is more like 95% are free. If you want the last 5% that only really are needed if you plan on playing A LOT, you have to pay. I spent 20$ on monday, now I have the Pathfinder like 60% unlocked, the rest is upgrades that can only be unlocked with XP.
Plus, if you want to compare it to WoW, look at how long it takes you in WoW until you can do everything. If you spend that much time in Tribes, you propably unlocked everything only with XP, making it 100% F2P.
I always thought Bolt Launcher had to be imbalanced, cuz I got owned by it often. Turns out it is pretty hard to aim since he has a drop-down. What I want to say with this is: Skill makes you a good player, not money. Money is like 0.0000000001% and if you pay 10 bucks for this game, which is less than you would pay for any other game of this caliber, you get +50% XP and can unlock a new class every 2-3 days, if you play like 2-3h a day.
I did buy the smallest package(for the VIP status, that thing is a godsend, the coins are a bonus that I haven't even used yet ^^).
My beef with Doombringer isn't that one of his weapons cost 75k, but that it seems to be an extremely essential weapon to play his role. The game is definitely F2P and if I've been doing badly it's because I suck and not because I don't have an item. Doombringer is the exception because it seems so much easier to defend with mines, and that class is ONLY good for defending.
Honestly I feel that the game is likely too "cheap". I've played for a week and I've unlocked a loooot of shit already. I'll probably get all the stuff I want within a month or two.. Maybe I'm too used to asian grindy stuff.

Indeed, this is the third F2P type game that I played and it's by far the cheapest and most rewarding one.
I was unsure about the whole F2P cash model when it was invented but I'm starting to like it. It caters precisely to the kind of person that I am.
Game goes "open beta" as in no key required anymore and a new game mode. Lots of bug fixes(turrets in invetory station gets finally fixed) and other stuff.
Also mandatory trobes vid which people should see:

I know, but I'm just wondering if the VIP is still for life if you aren't a VIP yet now that it is in open Beta.
First game on new CTF map, find a flag route 330kmh grab with a 344kmh ski. This new map is quickly becoming my favorite. And even when going 300+, it still feels like you're skiing so slow. I love it. Arena is also quite fun. Defiantly something ill get into if it doesn't turn into raider/tech spam.

Yeah. New map is awesome. All the maps should be this size.

I just ran into you in a pub game, you mowed me down with a shrike a couple times
new patch is pretty sexy. Arena maps are loads of fun, not so much for people who can't dance like michael jackson with a jetpack I imagine, but I'm loving a more condensed DM style. The maps really force you to get good at landing shots and the layout makes it so you can tactically force people into going somewhere to land and then pre-emptively shooting that spot to nail them.
also every new patch your settings get reset so dont forget to change them back like fov and keybinds
also the guy who made this vid has some other vids that are kinda nice
protip: bind jump to middle mouse button scroll down. this is what many pro bunny hoppers in CS do, and i do it also, i'm good at bhopping but not pro like some of these guys who can clear sick maps in like no time. it is much much easier IMO and it's probably the best jump key i've ever found...
