I feel like unless you had like 500 cards sitting in your inventory you wont win shit lol. Some people have like 20,000 gems bid into some games. While i currently have 100, seems like its not worth it at all.

I don't even want to know how he got that many.

I think that for most people it's going to best to either convert the gems then turn them into boosters and sell the cards from there, or to just sell cards/backgrounds/emoticons directly. For the amount you'd have to spend to get enough gems to win an auction, it'll probably end up being cheaper to just buy the game when it's on sale. I think it's a pretty interesting thing to do though. Basically it looks like a way for Valve to take the market and force prices back up. Higher demand (to turn things in to gems) and reduced availability (cards etc getting destroyed for gems). Very clever of them, seeing as how they get 10-15% of each market sale.

Not to mention that, from the looks of it, one "gem" is about worth one cent (you can convert a card into 5 gems or sell it for 5 cents, basically), so people bidding are paying ridiculous prizes for the games.

My csgo cards are worth 40 gems and 6 cents each, and my backgrounds are anywhere from 40-100 gems each for 3-5 cents. What cards are you looking at that give so few gems?

Cards seem to have a really bad conversion rate. Emoticons and backgrounds vary from 10 to 100 gems each. I have no idea what math they're doing to determine how many gems something is worth though, pretty much all the backgrounds I have are only worth 3 or 4 cents on the market, but the gem values are all over the place.

Seems to depend on the game, and I would guess cards that are owned by more people are worth more. But even if the cards are worth five times as much, you are still way better off just selling them and buying games for real money than to bid on games with gems.

Backgrounds from previous sales and whatnot are worth 100 gems for ~3-5 cents from the marketplace. You can see that thousands of them have been sold in the last 24 hours.

Anyways for me its just a fun way to clean my inventory, got 3k gems from that and that will buy 1-2 decent oldies. Im not even gonna try and compete with the crazy trader people, i guess those will clean up that community market quite a bit, Valve is always really clever with this community stuff.

This is really one of the craziest events that steam has ever done Disregard that there is much better gem to money ratio out in the wild
