Heaven forbid people are held to their word? I don't know what to say, be accountable for you words. At the very least give a caveat if you give a time frame or ETA. If you say "Monday or Tuesday," people will expect that, since it comes from an employee.
did you miss the second half of the sentence where he said "barring unforeseen circumstances?"

I don't mind it being delayed for a bit

So based on that tweet we're looking at this Friday or next Monday for the first wave? Assuming nothing else comes up of course.

People should be happy that Smed's is even using twitter to TRY to get keep people updated on the beta status to the best of his ability. Things change, and in no way is twitter an official "beta will be out this day source." Like someone else said, Blizzard catches so much shit for never releasing dates and when a company tries to be transparent and give some release dates for a beta that players are not entitled to be in, they catch flack from people.

If you say "Monday or Tuesday," people will expect that, since it comes from an employee. Heaven forbid something happens and they have to delay the fucking game. Then all the raging nerds everywhere will come out and bitch up a storm. Holy shit, it's an MMO first off. Things change everyday with those. It's a beta secondly, obviously it's probably not going to go smoothly. Thirdly it's a completely new engine. Did you rage this hard at every other mmo when it released/had unexpected downtime? Did you rage at d3 when you couldn't login for four hours at launch? My god, people need to relax. If you're seriously this pissed off over a video game maybe you should stop playing. People miss deadlines everyday in every sort of business environment, it's not the end of the world.
http://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem
Actually yes, yes I and many other people did rage when we couldn't login for hours at launch of D3. I don't know how anyone can justify that to be honest, but that's beside the point. People miss deadlines every day and people lose their jobs every day for missing those deadlines. You don't make deadlines if you aren't prepared to meet them. It's that simple. This is a basic fundamental rule of life and business that you should have learned in High School.
Calling anyone disappointed by this "raging nerds" and saying "it's just a game" to try and nullify this fact does nothing. Yes, it's just a game. I honestly do not know why people continue to use such a pathetically weak argument. It's just a video game so we shouldn't expect basic fundamental principles of respect in the business/customer relationship that exists in every other facet of the market? Yes, I am a raging nerd. But I am a raging nerd who is also their customer, and as their customer I have every right to be angry when they are consistently setting deadlines and then not meeting them.
Want to know why Blizzard says "Soon™" and "When it's ready"? Because like you said, beta's and development of games -- especially on new engines -- is a very volatile and excruciating process. Blizzard knows this, so they don't make deadlines they are not prepared to commit too because they know when you consistently go back on your deadlines it's just plain bad business. SOE's marketing team doesn't seem to get this.
You simply do not make deadlines ("a few weeks after E3", "Definitely in July", "Monday or Tuesday") unless you are ready to commit. Yes they said "unless unforseen consequences come up" but when you give a SPECIFIC DATE people are going to expect that. "Unforseen consequences" is just PR talk and we all know it, and all the major magazines and websites know it and that's why they hyped up that day as the beta start. Because when companies make deadlines, they should stick to them or not make them at all.
This is not a bash on the development team or the game at all. The dev team is doing the absolute best they can and are busting their asses off trying to get this game ready for us. They want this game to succeed and they love it and there is not a moments rest for them, I understand this. My problem lies in with SOE constantly making promises in terms of access, and then going back on them. In constantly making deadlines and breaking them. But from what I'm seeing, it's worth the wait -- I just hope they can actually meet their deadline this time so we can get this train rolling and so that we can all go gang up on the NC or something
So please, for the sake of all of us, stop saying "it's just a video game" to justify them breaking deadlines. Yes, it is a video game. It is also a business, a multi-million dollar business.
------------
But back on topic? Is anyone else pumped for the integrated music player? I can't fucking wait to play some Ride the Valkyries or something in my Galaxy I'm personally craving some form of long range artillery, even if it's just an upgrade for a tank or something.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO o long range artillery. The Flails was the single biggest mistake ever made in PS1(even worse then BFR) Ultra long range insta killing machines are not good for a video game.

Who said anything about instant killing? They should be VERY hard to use imo and require coordination from your team. I don't want it to be a glorified Orbital Strike or something. But apparently spotting is VERY useful, and it could be very interesting to have an infil sneak in and mark targets, and then you can shell it with an artillery upgrade or something. Also, interesting quote on the spotting system. Really hypes me up:
+ Show Spoiler +The range of spotting is reduced at twilight and night time.
I'm not sure if it is intended or not, but the only way to consistently spot in the middle of the night, is with a high powered scope.
That also reminds me of an amazing experience I had. There was one big battle front, where the TR zerg and NC zerg had met midfield in the middle of the night. No spotting was possible for either side, so air support (libs) and tanks were struggling to breach the lines. It was 100v100 or thereabouts, and tracers were zipping back and forth between small hills.
I decided that I'd had enough of taking potshots, and slipped out and began a flanking maneuver over one of the large hills, luckily getting the drop on NC infils on the way, and dispatching them with my knife.
I slid down the opposite side of the hill and had a PERFECT view of the NC zerg. Just dozens of people packed into one small rock formation, all using it as cover. There was a sunderer and a vanguard behind them. None of them were spotted, so it was just a mass of dark blue figures against dark green and brown, in the middle of the night.
I zoomed in and hit 'Q'. The entire NC zerg, and all of their vehicles lit up, for the first time in about a half hour.
It was remarkable how our own zerg reacted after I was able to maintain recon. Suddenly, branches of blue triangles started splitting off and began their own flanking maneuvers, while our armor rolled forward to slam some cannon fire into that massed group of NC. I provided sniper support, taking out the medics which were frantically attempting to revive their teamates who had been killed by suddenly much more accurate fire.
Minutes later, the NC zerg was demolished and the TR ground force rolled into the first Peris capture point. I can tell you it was the most nostalgic feeling, watching 100 men and max's running across an open field, flanked by armored columns, with a base looming in the distance.
People can shit on PS2 all they want, but it's going to be something special whether they like it or not. I can't even imagine how unreal it's going to be once all of the certs and extra shit is in. It's already amazing with everything missing.
Oh, and for anyone who is military and deployed to a combat zone, the nighttime tracer fire is fucking uncanny. I got chills, watching the AA turrets lighting up the sky around Zurvan. Reminded me a lot of the C-RAM (counter rocket artillery mortar) guns they had around Balad, Iraq.

We're on a website dedicated to video games, discussing a video game with other people who discuss and even watch other people play video games. A website dedicated to the professional aspect of video games and people who dedicate the best years of their lives to these games, and the people who watch them. I don't think "nerd" is the appropriate insult for this context. We're all nerds here.

Requiring teamwork to kill people is a great idea. Giving that person getting killed ZERO chance to retaliate is not. That is one aspec of real life fighting I hope Planetside 2 stays as far away from as possible. Artillery is not a fun gameplay mechanic from the victims end. Its easily the most infuriating way to die.

That aspect is in every part of Planetside 2. What is a Light Assault to do against an Aircraft? What is a tank with ground weapons supposed to do against an Aircraft? A MAX with machine guns against a tank? An infiltrator against a MAX? If you say "get in cover", that's the same answer I'd say in relation to a form of artillery. Artillery would be extraordinarily vulnerable to air strikes and even infantry strikes. All it would take is 2 infiltrators or heavy assaults to come in and take them out since they'd have no measure to fire in close range.

Sorry son, you're not a one man army. You can't fight everything yourself.
This was the attitude of the surgile, quad-shotting, reaverspamming nublets back in the old Planetside. "I got skills so I should be able to kill everything!". Nope, not how Planetside was supposed to work, not how Planetside 2 works either. Playing the wrong game if you want to be a one-man army with mad k/d.

So you think its ok to sit beside a repair silo 3 bases back and spam a courtyard with a flail? I did it, Great way to massivly inflate the k/d. Its easy to go 100/0 or more.
I do not want to be a 1 man army. I'll happily get my ass handed to me by a Prowler/Vangaurd/Liberrator/Lightning/MAX. Those things should kill me but my team mates can save me from them. My team cannot save me from some n00b cannon thats 1/2 a continate away padding his 100/0 K/D.

I kind of hope they eventually change the enter/exit system to a Project Reality system. Where although instant, you had to be facing the driver door to get in the driver seat or the back of a transport vehicle to get in the back, or on top of a tank to get inside of it and the like.

Giving that person getting killed ZERO chance to retaliate is not. That is one aspec of real life fighting I hope Planetside 2 stays as far away from as possible. Artillery is not a fun gameplay mechanic from the victims end. Its easily the most infuriating way to die.
I don't mind getting leveled by artillery when I deserve it. As many people have already stated though, it will be annoying and overpowered if a single person can deploy and use strong artillery. It should require team work and take time to set up. However, if a team manages to get it set up and start coordinating strikes, they should be able to use it to their full potential.
Its when people can simply set it up on their own and spam it that it starts to get annoying. Take bombing in Tribes 2 for example. Would be frustrating sometimes to die to a bomber, but when you realize you have to have a pilot, a bomber and a tail gunner to consistently bomb the hell out of the enemy team. Otherwise the bomber just went down after 1 run and didn't really make that much of a difference.

Thats part of the awesome that is planetside. Getting rid of annoying shit like that becomes a realtime sandboxish objective, which can be approached by a conventional large scale force of players or a small group of friends in various ways. Tactical advantages by controlling strategic shit is what makes this game novel. Of course eventually the blob will probably take it over EVENTUALLY, but when you've spent a few hours of your time, fighting to gain an advantage, and finally succeed or play a part in the success, it;s a great feeling, and it's part of what makes planetside awesome.

So is there a current beta going on? Open/Closed?

There was a tech test last week, I think; closed beta is supposed to start within the next week, but it's been pushed back a few times already. I don't think they'll do an "open beta" because it's a F2P game, but there are various levels of closed beta passes, and for the lowest level I think you just need to sign up on their website and you get a chance to get in towards the end. Not really sure -- I can't run the game properly on this machine so I haven't really been paying attention, but check their homepage or the PS2 reddit, it's very active.
